It consists of research outputs such as tools, equipment, genetic materials, breeds, farming and herding practices, gathering practices, laboratory techniques, models etc. Management practice: This is defined as recommendation(s) on practice(s) that is/are considered necessary for a technology to achieve its optimum output. These include, for instance, different agronomic and practices (seeding rates, fertilizer application rates, spatial arrangements, planting period, land preparation, watering regimes, etc.), protection methods, for crops; and feed rations, management systems, disease control methods, etc. for animal breeds. This is therefore important information which is generated through research to accompany the parent technology before it is finally released to users and the technology would be incomplete without this information. Innovation: This is defined as a modification of an existing technology for an entirely different use from the original intended use. (e.g., fireless cooker modified to be used as a hatchery) 2 1.2 Summary of Inventory of TIMPs in the Teff Value Chain The inventory process identified 95 TIMPs comprising 43 technologies, 16 innovations and 36 management practices, distributed among the 12 sub-themes, as indicated in the table below. SHARMA Germplasm Resources and Enhancement Program, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru 502 324, Andhra Pradesh, India (Received for publication 18 July 2000; revised manuscript accepted 24 November 2001) The sorghum shoot Xy, Atherigona soccata is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum in Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean Europe. This paper reviews the current state of information on diversity, ecobiology, parasitism levels, and mass rearing of the parasitoids, predators and pathogens attacking diVerent stages of A. soccata. Among the parasitoids, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii and Trichogrammatoidea simmondsi Nagaraja on the eggs, and Neotrichoporoides nyemitawus Rohwer on the larvae are most important. Although 15 species of predators have been recorded, their predation potential has not been assessed under Weld conditions. Several species of spiders are important predators on eggs. The ecobiology of T. chilonis, T. simmondsi, N. nyemitawus, Spalangia endius Walker and Trichopria sp. has been studied in considerable detail. The parasitism levels are quite high during the post-rainy season by Aprostocetus sp., N. nyemitawus, Opius sp. and S. endius. Augmenting population s of T. chilonis does not reduce the shoot Xy infestation under Weld conditions. Parasitism by N. nyemitawus is greater in sorghum-cowpea intercrop than where sorghum is the sole crop. Mass rearing techniques are available only for T. chilonis and T. bactrae. The constraints and challenges for utilizing the natural enemies in integrated pest management have been discussed.

Available biological data and geographical distribution of each species is mentioned briefly. BEARDSLEY† (Research Associate, Hawaii Biological Survey, Bishop Museum, 1525 Bernice Street, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96817-2704, USA) Introduction This paper presents results of a recent (1997–1999) survey of terrestrial arthropods of Midway Atoll and lists 546 species identified from 1891 to 1999. The last published com- pilation (Suehiro, 1960) listed 221 species, and the first complete listing from the 1923 Tanager Expedition published 38 species (Bryan et al., 1926). The increasing number of arthropod species reflected in these surveys is likely related to the increase in plant species present, increased contact between Midway and the outside world by means of surface and air vessels, and increased effort on the part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to inventory the arthropod fauna. The percentage of the fauna composed of native species (17%) is small and some of these species were not recollected during the present survey. Also, a large number (33%) of historically recorded alien species were not recollected. More recently introduced immigrants may have displaced some of them. The present list includes 205 new island records from Midway including 29 new records for the Hawaiian archipelago. Continued introductions resulting from frequent visits to Midway by unin- spected air and surface vessels will result in serious pest problems there.

    Curatorial Report on the Midway Arthropod Collection1 Prepared for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service by Tino M. Gonsalves Hawaii Biological Survey Bishop Museum 30 September 2003 Summary: The following is a detailed description of the Midway arthropod collection currently housed at Bishop Museum, including its current level of curation and the conditions under which it is maintained. The list of available specimens is largely in agreement with the list of taxa supplied by Gordon Nishida in 1998. Missing taxa likely represent specimens known only by singletons or specimens currently out on loan. Counts include specimens collected in 1997 and 1998, and 2000. In the course of compiling this list two new records for Midway have been discovered. One of these species appears to be new to Hawaii. Collection Background: The Midway collection was assembled during 1997, 1998, and 2000. The 1997 and 1998 samples were collected by Gordon Nishida, Adam Asquith, G. Allan Samuelson, and USFWS personal in order to construct an exhaustive list of Midway’s terrestrial arthropod fauna, with particular attention paid to invasive species. A final report produced by Gordon Nishida in December of 1998 listed 508 species (Nishida, 1998), more than doubling the previous number, which stood at 221 (Suehiro, 1960). The report also provided recommendations for the control and monitoring of invasive arthropods, as well as an exhaustive bibliography. In 1999 John Beardsley collected additional specimens, and with Gordon Nishida, published a list of 546 species (Nishida & Beardsley, 2002). Gordon Nishida did further collecting in 2000 as part the NOWRAMP project (Nishida, 2001). These specimens are housed with the 1997 and 1998 arthropods.
