Nicola’s Message

Hello everyone.

Spring has sprung and life at the UPA Hunter Region is as busy as usual. We just need some rain soon!!! There have been a few changes over the past few months that I would like you to know about:

: Adam has taken over gardening duties at Woodlands Village : Cara has resigned : Tammy will also be leaving us on the 13th of October. I know I speak for everyone when I wish them all the best for their future.

We had our Annual General Meeting on the 25TH of September, thank you to everyone who attended. As you can see in our Annual Report we are in a good financial position moving forward. Sarina Villages’ external paintwork has been completed, Colin will attend to any extra painting as required. Peter, our new chef will attend the next Woodlands Village meeting to dis- cuss residents’ ideas/concerns. He was unable to attend the last meeting as we had a Food Safety Audit. Catering Industries passed with flying colours. The new Thursday Heart Moves group and lunch group is going well and it is great to see our facilities being used by the community. It is also very good to see the pool being well used. As most of you now know Amanda Burgess has resigned due to ill health. We all continue to send our best wishes and prayers as Amanda and her family are going through a very tough time.

Welcome to our new residents and remember my door is always open if you have any concerns or want a chat.

Yours sincerely, Nicola Styles

I was recently sent information from the NSW Trustee and Guardian and thought it may be of interest to you, either individually or as a group.

Their letter advises that their specialist staff can hold a free one hour community information seminar so that staff, stakeholders or residents can find out more about planning ahead options in the following areas:

 What is a Will and why you need one?  Why is it important to have a Power of Attorney  How you go about making a Will and/or Power of Attorney

Getting your legal affairs in order is an important part of life planning. Many people have superannuation policies, retirement funds and insurance policies, yet simply put off drafting a Will or making a Power of Attorney.

A recent Newspoll research found that 45% of adults in NSW haven’t planned for what happens to their assets and how they would be distributed after they die. This can cause many problems within families when someone close passes away. Similarly, if a family member requires assistance in the management of their financial affairs and do not have a Power of Attorney, the situation can become unnecessarily complicated.

 Will - A Will sets out who will received your assets when you die

 Power of Attorney—A Power of Attorney allows you to appoint some- one to manage your financial affairs.

 Enduring Guardian— An Enduring Guardian will make decisions related to your health and lifestyle if you are unable to.

Situations where you may want to update your plan ahead documents include:

 Marriage  Separation or divorce  Buying or selling a house  Retirement  Welcoming children or grandchildren into your family  A beneficiary or executor named in your Will has died.

Vital Call - Important information

Have you checked your Vital Call button yet?

If not, pick a date, add it to your calendar and test your Vital Call button please.

If you check this during Woodlands office hours and a staff member is in the office, we will ring you and let Vital Call know we have checked on you. But if Vital Call do call you directly just tell the person that you are testing. This will also get you used to the procedure in case of an emergency . Please follow this process with your neck pendant as well.

What happens if you are in need of help and you have an emergency situation where you can’t answer the phone when vital call ring?

They will automatically send an ambulance.

If you do not hear from Vital Call or our office, please continue to press your vital call button a number of times. If you can reach the phone & have had no response, please call 000

If you do need help and cannot open the door, Vital Call have an access code for the Master key so ambulances can access your Unit

This information is only given to emergency services when needed .

For Home Care Clients with a med link unit—these units are tested nightly by med link & they notify me of any issue.

Thank you to those residents who are conducting monthly checks. This helps us identify any issues and gives you the confidence that this system is working.

Safety Tip’s Speed Limit & Seat Belts Please be mindful of the 10km speed limit within the Woodlands Village. Residents may not always hear your vehicle, especially from behind. If travelling on the UPA bus, please remain seated until the bus has stopped, this includes travelling within the Village grounds . Seat Belts - If you traveling in a UPA Bus or Community Care Staff vehicle, seat belts must be worn at all times. Please leave seat belts fastened and stay seated until the driver has stopped and advised you its safe to get out of the vehicle .

Kilometers

Is the speed limit in the Village please obey this sign while driving in the Village

Take care if you are out walking in the village—please use the footpaths, not the grass or the road if possible.

The grass can be slippery when wet, and even though there is a 10 km road speed limit, the roads are there for the cars, not the pedestrians.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE RECIPE TO SHARE?

I have found some easy recipes that you can cook and save half for another meal.

Sausage Bake

6 thick sausages 2 cups of chopped vegetables (celery, onion, carrot, broccoli etc) 1/2 cup tasty cheese 420g can cream of mushroom soup

Combine all in a casserole dish and season with salt and pepper. Bake covered for 45 minutes at 150 degree C, uncover, stir and bake a further 15 minutes. Serve with rice, veges or salad.

Chutney Chicken Dish

2 chicken breasts 2 tablespoons rosella fruit chutney 2 tablespoons French mustard 1/4 cup cheddar cheese, grated

Mix the chutney with the mustard and cover the chicken breasts. Put chicken breasts in a baking dish, cover with grated cheese and place in oven for 15-20 minutes at 180 degrees C. Serve with rice, veges or salad.

Leftovers from both meals could be sliced and eaten cold on a sandwich the next day or frozen for later.

12 For your interest we have provided a page to colour. It is said to be very therapeutic.

In the last Bulletin, Bob Wetherall asked how may birds you could identify in the Woodlands site. He has added 2 new sightings for you. Daily Weekly

Magpie Kookaburra Noisy Miner Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Feral Pigeon Spotted Turtle Dove Rainbow Lorikeet Cattle Egret Often Crested Pigeon

Spur Winged Plover Maned Duck (Wood Duck)

Corella Rarely Currawong White Faced Heron Dusky Moorhen Koel Cuckoos (male & female pictured) Great Egret Little Swift Indian Mynah Straw-necked Ibis Superb Fancy Wren Sacred Ibis Raven Pied Butcherbird Pacific Black Duck Grey Butcherbird Tawny Frogmouth Wagtail Very Rarely Magpie Lark (Peewee) Galah Little Pied Cormorant Australian King Parrot Eastern Spinebill Lewins Honeyeater Heard but never seen Pied Heron Bell Miner (Bellbird) Domestic Duck Bittern Pacific Whiter Necked Heron Spoonbill New Sightings Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo Black-headed Cuckoo Shrike

Margaret Clulow tells me to add Rosella’s to the list. Recently I have sighted several birds a bit larger than Magpies, but completely black. I think they are European Blackbirds, but Judy Adcock says they could be Choughs. Trouble is, by the time I get out the binoculars to check if their eyes are red or yellow, they have flown off.

Men’s Shed Report

In the workshop, we have repainted a cast iron doorstop swan, assembled and varnished a hardwood board for mounting an elkhorn, and fitted a varnished dowel to hang a small tapestry. Not much work, but plenty of talk.

In the vegie patch, the snow peas, turnips and radish have now finished. We have spinach and green cabbage, and coming soon are some red cabbage, brussel sprouts and a few broad beans and carrots.

Just planted are some lettuce, beetroot, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber and rock melon.

22 ELLIMATTA ECHOES Hello to all our readers,

Like most folks we at Ellimatta have weathered the cold and flu season and are enjoying the onset of Spring.

Our August and September outings took us from the mountain to the sea and we had a full bus on both occasions with folks from Ellimatta, Wood- lands and Sarina Court. It is always good to catch up with folks and share a good day out.

August saw us head to Nelson Bay where we enjoyed great weather,

The mouth of beautiful Port Stephens with Mt Tomaree to the south & Mt Yacaaba to the north.

The magnificent backdrop behind Gloucester township

23

SARINA’S TID BITS

Our August bus trip stopped at Stockton for morning tea. The wind was so strong we felt like we were going to be blown away!

We then drove on to Tea Gardens for lunch. It is always so lovely to visit. It is such a peaceful place.

24

Our bus trip in September took us to The Sacred Heart Convent at Singleton.

The Sisters of Mercy were founded in Dublin, Ireland in 1831 by an heiress Catherine McAuley who used her wealth to help poor women and children in distress. Her work blossomed into a religious order which has spread around the world.

Ten Sisters came to Singleton from Ireland in 1875 and the Convents of Sisters of Mercy spread throughout the Hunter Valley.

Singleton convent was opened as a “Mother House” in 1909. Since 1995, the Convent has become known as a beautiful heritage site, open for tours, concerts and other activities.

We all enjoyed our tour very much with Sister Monica Sinclair, a retired Sister of Mercy. We went on to have our lunch at Singleton RSL. A lovely day out!
