For what do we yearn? What are the resources we bring to bear on yearning? Can yearning be progressive and creative? The purposes of this dissertation are: (a) to explore Jung’s perspectives on yearning; (b) to relate these perspectives to his views on regressive and repressive defensiveness as opposed to progressive creativity; (c) to compare and integrate these perspectives with the findings of contemporary psychologists who study creativity, particularly as they relate to eminent and everyday creativity; and (d) to illustrate the integrated perspectives as they manifest in examples of eminent and everyday creativity, focusing on two of the most important subjects Jung explores: the visual image (representing eminent creativity through photography), and sexuality (representing everyday creativity through sex therapy). This dissertation is qualitative including hermeneutic, phenomenological, and composite case study approaches. Investigations into Jung’s and contemporary psychologists’ perspectives on creative yearning are archival and database. Eminent iii photography is examined through interviews, anecdotes, observation, archival research and operationalization through visual images and words. Everyday sexuality is explored through observation of sex therapy clients together with database research. The results emphasize the transformative and meaningful power of authentically creative yearning as Jung and contemporary psychologists present it. According to Jung, Jung differed from Freud by suggesting that while we desire regressive homecoming to the unconscious, archetypal Mother-Limerence, and while we long for repressive mastery through conscious, archetypal Father-Liveliness, that for which we ultimately yearn is original, resonant integration of both these energies in forms that assume what Jung defines as authentically creative, Self-Liberating meta-consciousness and purposiveness. The discussion suggests the power of eminent photographs and everyday sexuality to represent yearning for: Mother-Limerence through visionary blending of visual dimensions, and through erotic tactile focus, respectively; archetypal Father- Liveliness via laws of aesthetic visual organization, and via logotic sensual knowledge, respectively; and, ultimately, Self-Liberation through the integrative STROBEnBLUR in photography and Sensate Focus in sex therapy. For Jung, authentic creativity is yearning for the felt oneness borne of differentiation, namely, immortality. The facts we believe we know are based on a few intuitions about time, which are, in turn, based on our conscious waking experiences. As far as I can tell, these intuitions about time are something like this: 1) There is a physical world in which events occur, 2) These events are mirrored by our perceptual re-creation of them in essentially the same order in which they occur in the physical world, 3) This re-creation of events occurs in a linear order based on our conscious memory of them (e.g., event A is said to occur before event B if at some point we do remember event A but we don’t yet remember event B, and at another point we remember both events), 4) Assuming we have good memories, what we remember has occurred in the past and what we don’t remember but we can imagine might: a) never occur, b) occur when we are not conscious, or c) occur in the future. These intuitions are excellent ones for understanding our conscious conception of ordered events. However, they do not tell us anything about how the non-conscious processes in our brains navigate events in time. Currently, neuroscientists assume that neural processes of which we are unaware, that is, non-conscious processes, create conscious awareness as a reflection of physical reality (Singer, 2015).

In addition, persistent instances of “uncanny” intuitive knowing, such as “thought trans- ference,” telepathic/precognitive dreams, distant awareness, and synchronicity have been identified since the very beginnings of psychoanalysis. These phenomena have remained on the fringes of scientific exploration, partly because of the lack of a conceptual model that would bring them into the mainstream of clinical work. The authors propose a Nonlocal Neurodynamics model that com- plements classical local-interactive forms of sensory (verbal and nonverbal) communication with nonlocal-participatory informa- tional channels arising from the fundamental quantum/classical nature of the body/brain/mind system. We suggest the need for a metaphor shift in psychoanalysis in order to incorporate the latest developments in complexity science and quantum neurobiology, which allow for a meta-reductive informational perspective that bridges the Cartesian mind-brain divide and enables a unified pic- ture of psychophysical reality. This multiplicity speaks to a physical disconnection between places as well as to a mental state of disassociation. Through process I enable likewise contradiction and unification. I use materials to reconcile the opposite ends of a spectrum of transformation. Documentation allows me to extract and distill the essence of an action performed in my studio. I use the body in the same way I use materials. I watch its influence on a space, situation and condition and force it to enter interim stages somewhere between pleasure and pain.     Individuation as Spiritual Process: Jung’s Archetypal Psychology and the Development of Teachers Kathleen Kesson See the published version in the journal: ENCOUNTER: EDUCATION FOR MEANING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Winter 2003, 16 (4). “…The spirit has its homeland, which is the realm of the meaning of things… -Saint Exupéry The Wisdom of the Sands In the mid-1970s, curriculum theorist James Macdonald, in his discussion of various ideologies of education, proposed a category that he called the “transcendental developmental ideology.” This perspective would correct what he thought was the limiting, materialist focus of the radical or political view of education, which he considered a “hierarchical historical view that has outlived its usefulness both in terms of the emerging structure of the environment and of the psyches of people today” (Macdonald 1995, 73). The transcendental developmental ideology would embrace progressive and radical social values, according to Macdonald, but would be rooted in a deep spiritual awareness. Drawing upon the work of M.C. Richards (1989), he used the term “centering” to signify this form of consciousness. Macdonald termed his methodology of development a “dual dialectic,” a praxis involving reflective transaction between the individual ego and the inward subjective depths of the self, as well as between the ego and the outer objective structures of the environment.
