Since assuming office as President, I have been feeling the great expectations towards our Group from our stakeholders. I am willing to fulfill my responsibilities by exercising leadership so that our Group can provide our stakeholders with the value, satisfaction, and excitement that exceeds their expectations and contribute to the development of the society. Current Business Environment and Medium-term Business Plan (FY2018 – FY2020) In recent years, the business environment surrounding our Group has been steady on the background of the followings: the demand for infrastructure development such as the recovery and reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake for building national resilience of Japan; the increase in inbound demand; the projects related to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics Games; and the redevelopment projects in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Taisei Group’s FY2019 operating results achieved an increase in revenues from the steady progress of our present construction works, and maintained a high-level operating income in terms of profit. However, to our regret, FY2020 operating results are forecasted to be lower than the Management Numerical Targets for the final fiscal year of the current Medium-term Business Plan due to signifi-cant decreases in revenues and profits under the estimated impact by the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. The issue of COVID-19 completely overturns the funda- mental nature of corporate activities and social values, and forces to change the conventional business models. From now President and Chief Executive Officer, Representative Director and on, I assume that companies in this world will be sorted into two groups: Those can adapt to such changes and revolutions in the market environment and take it as a chance for further growth; and those cannot.     Star Architects, Urban Spectacles and Global Brands: Exploring the Case of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Abstract Olympic stadia are often regarded as a political showcase involving a range of influences: the host nation’s international politics, the interests of transnational capitalism along with site-specific meanings and the power of iconic architecture. By examining the 2020 Tokyo Olympic main stadium as a case study, the paper analyzes the controversial Zaha Hadid’ stadium plan in relation to the Japanese nation branding initiative. In doing so, the paper argues that ‘branding’ should be seen as part of an economic and cultural system which seems to enhance the global value of iconic architects and their buildings. Yet, the power of brands can be understood as a contingent entity. This is because its ambivalenct nature entails a tension between exclusiveness and banality; additionally, it could be difficult for branded architects to work across the different regimes of global and local politics; and they are of course also constrained by the logic of neoliberal transnational capitalism. By investigating a major global branded architect, Zaha Hadid and her architecture plan, the paper considers why a new image of Japan could not be adequately created by Hadid’s aesthetics and narratives of the Olympic stadium which should be regarded as a national cultural legacy. The paper then discusses the contested processes of image-making and narrative creation in relation to the representation of Japan in contemporary Olympic culture. The paper concludes with an examination of Kengo Kuma’s architecture language in his 2020 Tokyo Olympics stadium design.

This is the first time our meeting has been in Fort Myers, Florida, nicknamed the “City of Palms.” Our meeting location is right on the Intercoastal Waterway right across from Sanibel Island, making it a perfect place to get away from the daily grind (brewing pun intended) and to really focus on The Science of Beer. This year, several elements of the program came together to create our theme, Beer: A Matter of Science and Perception. ASBC meetings Jeff Cornell draw many of the best brewing scientists from around the world to present their work and share their knowledge. But scientific research applied to beer and brewing is rarely black or white. Part of that “gray” area involves another science – perception. The way we perceive things touches our professional lives on a daily basis, whether it’s a sensory evaluation of beer or how we go about solving problems.
