Job Description Director of Boarding

Post Title: Director of Boarding

Purpose:  To provide students with an exceptional care experience that supports and enhances their academic, social and emotional development.  To inspire, lead and support staff in providing an exceptional boarding environment and experience for students  To lead on Boarding Development  To lead on staffing and organisation of all Sexey’s Boarding provision.  To develop and embed excellence across the Boarding provision.  To develop the ethos of an outstanding State Boarding provision integrated into a successful and ambitious comprehensive school.  To play a key role within the Senior Leadership and Safeguarding Team.

Reporting to: Headteacher

Liaises with parents, other boarding staff, Business Manager, Estate Manager, HR Liaising with: Manager, administrative team, Chaplain, parents/guardians/carers, Heads of Years, students.

Working Time: This is a full-time role with a teaching load of to 0.4 if the successful candidate has QTS. The post-holder is required to be resident on-site and will be required to undertake appropriate evening and weekend duties.

Salary/Grade: £45k to £50k per annum plus accommodation and meals. An additional recruitment and retention allowance may be available for the right candidate.

Accommodation is provided rent-free throughout the year with free breakfast and dinner available in the school dining room for the post-holder and their immediate family during term time except . The provision of water, heat and light is subject to a personal liability for Benefits in Kind taxation.

Disclosure level Enhanced MAIN (CORE) DUTIES (Please note: this is a non-teaching role)  To play a full and active part in school life as a member of the Senior Leadership & Leadership Team. Operational  Attend and contribute to Senior Leadership meetings. Management  Ensuring that Boarding contributes to and supports the ethos, vision and Development Plan of Sexey’s School.  Provide a safe environment for all students and staff with Safeguarding as a priority.  To be part of the Safeguarding Team  Reviewing Boarding House policies and procedures against the nationally agreed NMS, OfSTED Inspection Criteria and all other relevant standards; developing the highest standards of provision informed by this evaluation.

 Ensuring continued compliance with the NMS in relation to boarders’

welfare, safety and personal development.

 Ensuring that there is a systematic approach to the reviewing, planning and evaluation of boarding provision.  Overseeing and reporting regularly on the welfare, progress, social and academic achievement of boarders.  Embedding and developing the cycle of Boarding Self-Evaluation and Development Plans (to include annual student confidential questionnaire results covering both education and welfare) to ensure self- evaluation is at the heart of Boarding leadership and informs development planning.  Integrating and developing protocols and systems for Boarding that reflect those of the whole school.  Ensuring that meetings of boarding staff to review and improve practice are convened and led appropriately.  Ensuring that arrangements for safeguarding and child protection are outstanding.  Ensuring good student behaviour is maintained within Boarding and through consultation with boarders and application of the anti-bullying and equal opportunities policies.  Developing and implementing the cohesive programme of enrichment activities in conjunction with the Boarding Team.  Designing and maintaining a Boarding Handbook for staff and students outlining boarding procedures and practice.  Senior Leadership and oversight of the onsite Health Centre  Leadership of the whole school extracurricular experiences offer  Developing and supporting the Chaplain’s work in line with the school ethos and C of E status.

 Being available to provide support to colleagues and ensuring that a senior People substitute is available when off site. Management  Ensure the Boarding Team access appropriate professional supervision.  Ensure the CPD Programme is relevant and accessible for all Boarding staff.  Leading the Induction, professional development and mentoring of all staff.  Managing the annual appraisal/performance development cycle of all boarding staff working with the Leadership Team member responsible for staff appraisal.  Assisting in the selection, recruitment, induction and training of all new boarding staff.  Line Management of the School Nurse  Line Management and supervision of Deputy Director of Boarding, Boarding House Manager, Activities coordinator, House Parents

 Build upon the current network of overseas and UK based contacts to Marketing ensure targeted levels of occupancy are achieved for each academic year within the context of the eligibility criteria for State Boarding Schools.  Attending marketing events and appropriate Boarding School Fairs within the UK to raise the profile of Sexey’s School Boarding and to generate/obtain sufficient leads.  Use a detailed understanding of the state boarding school market to develop the future vision and direction/development of boarding at Sexey’s School.  Attending school events to promote Boarding where applicable.

 Undertaking admissions interviews to assess suitability for boarding, Admissions working closely with the Headteacher, Director of and Sixth Form team, who will ensure curriculum needs are assessed.  Streamlining the admissions process to align with the main school.  Ensuring all admissions protocols and procedures are adhered to, in particular in relation to eligibility of students to attend a State Boarding

School – this will require close monitoring of legislative changes within the UK and the ongoing eligibility criteria for State Boarding Schools.

 Monitoring, on a regular basis, the actual figures against budget allocations, Financial investigating any major variances and instigating appropriate remedial Management action, if required, to ensure Boarding continues to maintain a surplus of funds.  Ensuring the provision benefits from any financial sources that support state boarding school work.

 Producing and circulating a written report to governors one week prior to Communication each governors meeting.  Representing the interests of Boarding at all Leadership Team meetings. Ensuring the Boarding provision is increasingly integrated into the work and life of the whole school.  Working collaboratively with Leadership Team colleagues to ensure Boarders achieve the highest expectations of social and emotional development and academic success. The Learning outcomes of Boarders should be a key success criteria.  Liaising with the County Fire Officer, Business Manager and estate staff over operational issues in particular safety, security and emergency response.

 To promote, reinforce and model the school’s commitment to safeguarding Additional Duties and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Safeguarding is everybody’s responsibility.  Play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.  Promote actively the school’s corporate policies.  Continue personal professional development as agreed including attending training sessions or training courses even when these may be outside duty days.  Attend regular professional supervision.  Undertake other responsibilities as determined by the Head, following consultation.

Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. A review of the post and its responsibilities will be undertaken periodically and may result in modification to the tasks of the post holder.
