IIT BHILAI : IN PRESS 2016-2019 Foreword Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai (IIT Bhilai) became the 23rd IIT in the country and was established in the state of Chhattisgarh in 2016. Currently functioning out of a transit campus in Raipur, the permanent campus is proposed to be constructed on a 432 acre stretch of land in Kutelabhatha and Sirsa Khurd villages in the Durg district. The institute was established under the mentorship of IIT Hyderabad till the beginning of the tenure of its founding Director, Prof. Rajat Moona, in March 2017. In the three years of its existence the institute has expanded to include six departments – Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Liberal Arts. IIT Bhilai has grown significantly in terms of its academic and research profile, and this can be charted through press coverage in various local and national dailies of repute. The primary purpose of this booklet is to capture this growth. It will also serve as a repository of events that have proved significant in the shaping of the institute, for future reference. The booklet is to be released on the institute's Foundation Day, August 7, 2019, by chief guest Mr. K.K. Singh, ED (P&A), Bhilai Steel Plant and Prof. Rajat Moona, Director of IIT Bhilai. Dr. Rishi Ranjan Singh, Dr. MD Mehboob Alam and Dr. Sonal Jha coordinated the process of putting this booklet together. Ms. Lijy Susan acted as a resource person and made available the photographs used in this compilation. Ms. Sunima Baral, Mr. Vikas Sahu, Mr. Harish Sahu, Mr. Naveen Upadhyay, Mr. Md. Before he became the founding director of IIT Bhilai, he was the Director General of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), India from 2011-2017. What started as just an intra college sports event, has shaped out ti be something monumental and extraordinarily for the college students. Six teams participated at the sports league as the team members fought hard against one another over eight difference sports which each team getting the upper hand somewhere or the other. At the closing ceremony of Prayatna, the teams and all the dedicated players were rewarded for their hard work and dedication that they have shown in these four months training. 28 29 2018 The sports league of IIT Bhilai had organised the institute’s first intra-college sports league - Prayatna 2018 which concluded recently. What started as just an intra college sports event, has shaped out ti be something monumental and extraordinarily for the college students. Located in a green corner of the campus, surrounded by trees, with it's array of refreshments and beverages, the cafeteria comes to life in the evening as campus community members get together over a cup of coffee at the end of the work day and students plan various social and cultural events. 30 The Cafeteria is a popular campus haunt for students, faculty and staff alike. Organised completely by the students, the festival was a huge success and saw participation from students across the country in various technical and cultural events. In what turned into a memorable moment, the Director Prof. Rajat Moona and Mrs. Rajni Moona, sportingly agreed to walk the ramp at the request of students during the fashion show at Meraz 2018. 52 Meraz 2018, the first techno-cultural fest of IIT Bhilai, was held from October 5-7.
