It is the first of its kind to be used in combat 6 Iron Dome Iron Dome – a mobile air defense system in development by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aircraft Industries designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. On April 7, 2011, the system successfully intercepted a Grad rocket launched from Gaza, marking the first time in history a short-range rocket was ever intercepted. The Iron Dome was later utilized more fully in the Israeli-Gaza conflict of 2012, where it displayed a very high rate of efficiency (95%-99%) in intercepting enemy projectiles. 7 MUSIC MUSIC (Multi Spectral Infrared Countermeasure) – a system that counter surface-to-air heat-seeking missiles. It is manufactured by Elbit Systems. 8 MagnoShocker MagnoShocker – combines a metal detector and a taser to immediately neutralize a dangerous person, developed by the mathematician Amit Weissman and his colleagues Adir Kahn and Zvi Jordan 9 Wall radar Wall radar – a unique radar utilizing Ultra Wide Band (UWB) to allow users to see through walls. He is known colloquially as "the father of the hydrogen bomb" 14 The Arrow or Hetz The Arrow or Hetz is a family of anti-ballistic missiles designed to fulfill an Israeli requirement for a theater missile defense system that would be more effective against ballistic missiles than the MIM-104 Patriot surface- to-air missile. Jointly funded and produced by Israel and the United States. 15 Merkava tank Merkava tank - a tank optimized for crew survival and rapid repair of battle damage was designed in Israel 16 IAI Lavi IAI Lavi - an ambitious Israeli production of a modern fighter aircraft. The production of the plane was carried out at Israel Aircraft Industries. The production of the plane was disbanded when the Israeli government concluded it could not finance production on its own. 17 Unmanned aerial Unmanned aerial vehicles - an aircraft that flies without a human crew on vehicles board the aircraft. • Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Lavi by Ruud Deurenberg
Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Lavi By Ruud Deurenberg Introduction During the fifties and sixties the Tsvah Haganah Le Israel - Heyl Ha'Avir (Israel Defence Force/Air Force (IDF/AF)) relied on France for its combat aircraft. When, after the Six Day War (5 to 10 June 1967), France did not delivered the 50 Dassault Mirage 5Js Israel had ordered and paid for, Israel decided to develop its own combat aircraft. The first such attempt resulted in the Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) Kfir (Lion Cub), a multi-role fighter developed from the Mirage 5, of which a total of 212 were produced. To replace the Kfir, Israel developed the Lavi (Young Lion). Development Israel has been embroiled in more wars in recent times than any other nation, with the result that Israeli pilots are very combat experienced, and most likely to know exactly what they want in a fighter, within the constrains of affordability. When, in 1979, the Lavi program was announced, a great deal of interest was aroused for these reasons. The Lavi program was launched in February 1980 as a multi-role combat aircraft. The Lavi was intended primarily for the close air support (CAS) and battlefield air interdiction (BAI) mission with a secondary air-defense mission. The two-seat version could be used as a conversion trainer. As originally conceived, the Lavi was to have been a light attack aircraft to replace the elderly McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and the IAI Kfir, remaining in service with the IDF/AF. A single-seater, powered by a General Electric F404 turbofan, it was soon perceived that this solution gave no margin for future growth, and an alternative engine was chosen, the much more powerful Pratt & Whitney PW1120.

  • The Iai Lavi Project – the Dream and Downfall
PART II A WORLD OF COMPLEX PROJECTS – THEN AND NOW 2.1 THE IAI LAVI PROJECT – THE DREAM AND DOWNFALL An interview with Prof. Ovadia Harari of Blessed Memory During the second half of the 1970s, the Israeli Air Force had had four main types of attack aircraft: two single-engine fighters, the Skyhawk and the Delta; the Shachak, Nesher, and Kfir models; the two-engine Phantom; and their leading model, the two-engine F15. Around that time, the Air Force began to see the need to replace the Skyhawks and the Deltas with a more advanced, single-engine aircraft. Israel Aerospace Industries, the company in charge of producing the Nesher and Kfir models, understood that the day when these types of aircraft would no longer be in demand was not far off and was preparing to face the task of developing a new fighter plane. These preparations were not being made in response to a specific request made by a client. The discourse concerning the need for a new aircraft never went beyond the spontaneous, informal expression of ideas and standpoints between high-ranking Air Force officers. Naturally, these officers maintained continuous contact with IAI,and so, inevitably, word traveled. In other words, because the Air Force had not presented any formal request or demand for the production of such an aircraft, it was impossible to tell what sort of performance it was required to deliver. Moreover, whether the need would even be realized remained unclear. For instance, the Israeli government might Managing and Engineering Complex Technological Systems, First Edition.

Anderson* NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California Abstract The first human-powered flight was achieved by a canard-configured air craft (Wright Brothers). Although other canard concepts were flown with varying degrees of success over the years, the tail-aft configuration has dominated the aircraft market for both military and civil use. This paper reviews the development of several canard aircraft with emphasis on stability and control, handling qualities, and operating problems. The results show that early canard concepts suffered adversely in flight behavior because of a lack of understanding of the sensitivities of these concepts to basic stabil ity and control principles. Modern canard designs have been made competitive with tail-aft configurations by using appropriate handling qualities design criteria. Introduction A wide variety of canard designs have been proposed and flown over the years with varying degrees of success. 1 Recently, the canard arrangement has Presented at AIAA 12th Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Conference, Snowmass, CO, August 19-21, 1985.
