Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

GAVIN DOUGLAS’S AENEADOS: CAXTON’S ENGLISH AND "OUR SCOTTIS LANGAGE" Jacquelyn Hendricks In his 1513 translation of Virgil’s Aeneid, titled Eneados, Gavin Douglas begins with a prologue in which he explicitly attacks William Caxton’s 1490 Eneydos. Douglas exclaims that Caxton’s work has “na thing ado” with Virgil’s poem, but rather Caxton “schamefully that story dyd pervert” (I Prologue 142-145).1 Many scholars have discussed Douglas’s reaction to Caxton via the text’s relationship to the rapidly spreading humanist movement and its significance as the first vernacular version of Virgil’s celebrated epic available to Scottish and English readers that was translated directly from the original Latin.2 This attack on Caxton has been viewed by 1 All Gavin Douglas quotations and parentheical citations (section and line number) are from D.F.C. -

[Communicated January 11, 1869, with an Introductory Note.] NEAR the northern shores of the Firth of Forth, and within sight of Edin- burgh, lies the island anciently known as Emona, and in later times as Inchcolm, the island of St Columba. It is of very small extent, scarcely over half a mile in length, and 400 feet in width at its broadest part. The tide of commerce and busy life which ebbs and flows around has left the little inch in a solitude as profound as if it gemmed the bosom of some Highland loch, a solitude which impresses itself deeply on the stranger who comes to gaze on its ruined, deserted, and forgotten Abbey. Few even of those who visit the island from the beautiful village of Aberdour, close to it, know anything of its history, and as few out of sight of the island know of its existence at all. But although now little known beyond the shores of the Forth, Inchcolm formerly held a high place in the veneration of the Scottish people as the cradle of the religious life of the surrounding districts, and was second only to lona as a holy isle in whose sacred soil it was the desire of many generations to be buried. It numbered amongst its abbots men of high position and learning. Noble benefactors enriched it with broad lands and rich gifts, and its history and remains, like the strata of some old mountain, bear the marks of every great wave of life which has passed over our country. -

As such, his installation at Scone abbey on 24 November 1331 was another triumph for his father.1 The terms of the 1328 peace had stipulated that Edward III’s regime should help secure from Avignon both the lifting of Robert I’s excommunication and this parity of rite with the monarchies of England and France. David’s coronation must, then, have blended newly-borrowed traditions with established Scottish inaugural forms: it probably merged the introduction of the boy-king and the carrying of orb, sceptre and sword by the incumbents of ancient lines of earls, then unction and the taking of oaths to common law and church followed by a sermon by the new bishop of St Andrews, the recitation of royal genealogy in Gaelic and general homage, fealty and knighting of subjects alongside the king.2 Yet this display must also have been designed to reinforce the territorial claims of authority of the Bruce house in the presence of its allies and in-laws from the north, west and south-west of Scotland as well as the established Lowland political community. Finally, it was in part an impressive riposte to Edward II’s failed attempts to persuade the papacy of his claim for England’s kings to be anointed with the holy oil of Becket.3 1 Chronica Monasterii de Melsa, ed. -

Leiden: Brill, pp. 112-137. https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004446229_005 The Dominicans in Scotland, 1230-1560 Richard Oram “In this year [1230], the Jacobine friars […] enter Scotland for the first time.”1 This laconic entry in the Cistercian chronicle compiled at Melrose Abbey records the first step in a process that saw the eventual establishment of sixteen Dominican convents within Scotland and, in the later 15th century, their constitution as a separate province of the order. That brief statement in the Melrose Chronicle apart, the circumstances of their introduction, the nature of their reception, and the processes by which they fixed their presence in the main urban centres of the kingdom, remain shrouded in obscurity. Indeed, the growth of the Dominican presence in Scotland in the half-century after 1230, its organisation and leadership, and the sources of the patronage necessary to sustain the communities, can be glimpsed only sketchily in the fragmentary historical sources. Few of the surviving materials were generated by the Dominicans themselves and many do not have the friars as their primary focus or purpose. Loss of record evidence remains a critical impediment in any wider exploration of the development of the order in Scotland down to the middle of the 15th century, with little surviving from most houses to cast any light on the internal operation of the network of Dominican convents or the part which the friars played in the wider spiritual and intellectual life of the nation. -

Modern commentators set the death toll at between a quarter and a third of the population, speculating that Scotland may not have suffered as badly as some other regions of Europe.2 Nevertheless, it had a significant effect. Fordun’s Gesta discusses its symptoms, but its full impact on St Andrews comes to us through Walter Bower’s lament on the high loss among the cathedral’s canons.3 In Aberdeen, in contrast, there survive detailed burgh records regarding the process of isolating sufferers: that these relate to the outbreak of 1498 indicates that the burgesses had learned some epidemiological lessons from previous outbreaks and were willing to act on corporate responsibility.4 These responses nicely differentiate the burghs. On the north-east coast of Fife, St Andrews was a small episcopal burgh. From the top of St Rule’s tower (see above), it is easy to see to the north, the bishops’ castle substantially rebuilt by Bishop Walter Traill (1385-1401), the mouth of the river Eden, and beyond that the Firth of Tay; to the west, away from the sea, the good farmland in the rolling hills and valley of the Howe of Fife; to the east, the present harbour. -

The Use of the Name Scot in the Central Middle Ages Part 2: Scot as a surname, north of the Firth of Forth Matthew H. Hammond University of Glasgow1 The first part of this article (Hammond 2007) examined the use of the second name Scot as a by-name in the central middle ages and explored the contexts for the coining of this ethnonymic among three groups of people: merchants, clerics and knights. The remaining two parts of the article will consider the use of the name Scot as a hereditary surname, asking why families adopted the surname Scot, what contexts they operated in and how their naming practices changed across generations. Part 2 will take in turn three case studies of families based north of the Forth-Clyde isthmus who used the surname Scot – those based at Allardice KCD, Monorgan PER and Balwearie FIF. Part 3, in a future issue, will examine Scot families based in southern Scotland. I Scot of Allardice KCD The text of a charter of King William the Lion dated 16 October 1198 at Stirling, which survives only in an official transumpt of the original charter made in 1703 (NRS, GD 49/1), records the gift of Allardice (Arbuthnott parish) KCD to Walter son of Walter Scot ‘for the service of one archer with horse and hauberk and the performance of common aid due from thirteen oxgangs of land’ (RRS ii no. 404; H1/6/372).2 This was apparently a charter of succession, by which Walter Scot the younger succeeded to the estate of his father, who had recently died.
