Abstract: The identification of the activities which were carried out by women designed as medicae and obstetrices in the Latin epigraphy is a problem that previous scholars have already pointed out. In this paper, by means of epigraphic analysis of Latin inscriptions, we aim to discuss whether both terms, medica and obstetrix, may refer to the same profession. Riasunto: La storiografia che finora si è occupata del ruolo della donna nella medicina antica, risalta la problematica circa la definizione del tipo di lavoro che svolgevano le medicae. Mentre alcuni autori equiparano le mansioni di quelle donne alle obstetrices, limitando così il suo campo d’azione alla assistenza nel parto o ad aspetti riguardanti la ginecologia, altri sostengono che avevano anche una conoscenza generale della medicina, propio come i loro colleghi medici. In questo articolo analizzeremo le inscrizioni che documentano medicae e obstetri- ces, con lo scopo d’identificare possibili differenze o somiglianze. In questo modo si cercherà di capire se le due figure professionali alle volte coincidessero in una stessa donna oppure, al contrario, il lavoro svolto dalle donne nel campo medico si limitava a mansioni di tipo ostetrico. El estudio de las fuentes literarias, epigráficas e incluso arque- ológicas ha puesto de manifiesto la presencia femenina dentro del ámbito de la medicina en la antigüedad, en el que, sin embargo, su- puso una minoría1. Aunque los términos con los que estas mujeres fueron recordadas en el mundo romano son bien conocidos (medica como correspondiente del masculino medicus y procedente del griego iatros; obstetrix, con el significado exclusivo de partera, que en grie- 1 H. Furst (ed.), Women Healers and Physicians: Climbing a Long Hill, Kentucky, 1997, 131. 268 Mª Ángeles ALONSO ALONSO go se definía como maia; y iatromaea, cuyo significado, aún un tanto oscuro, podría situarse entre la figura de la medica y la obstetrix)2, cuando pasamos a considerar el campo de trabajo específico al que tanto unas como otras se dedicaron vemos que la cuestión no está del todo clara3. Mientras que algunos autores han considerado que los términos medica y obstetrix eran equivalentes e indicaban a las mu- jeres encargadas de atender los partos4, otros sostienen que la me- dica sería más bien una profesional provista de buenos conocimien- tos de medicina general que curaba tanto a hombres como a mujeres, y que además de la ginecología podía estar especializada en otras ramas como la cirugía o la odontología5. Partiendo de esta dicotomía existente entre los autores que se han ocupado del papel clínico de la mujer en el mundo romano con anterioridad, y sin entrar en ella, el presente trabajo plantea un aná- lisis de las inscripciones latinas que documentan medicae por un lado y obstetrices por otro6, con la intención de establecer las posibles se- mejanzas o diferencias que puedan darse entre unas y otras. El fin úl- timo del estudio será el de intentar arrojar, en la medida de lo po- sible, algo de luz al problema de la interpretación de ambas figuras profesionales. Somos conscientes de que para intentar dar una solu- ción a la cuestión es necesario aunar el estudio de otro tipo de fuentes (literarias y arqueológicas fundamentalmente), de modo que concebi- mos este trabajo como una aproximación a la problemática más arri- ba apuntada desde la estricta óptica del análisis de la epigrafía latina.

    Hungarian Historical Review 3, no. 3 (2014): 494–528 Antal Molnár A Forgotten Bridgehead between Rome, Venice, and the Ottoman Empire: Cattaro and the Balkan Missions in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries A key element in the history of the missions that departed from Rome as of the middle of the sixteenth century is the functioning of the mediating structures that ensured the maintenance of the relationship between Rome as the center of the Holy Roman Empire and the territories where the missionaries did their work. On the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, Ragusa, which today is the city of Dubrovnik, was the most important bridgehead, but Cattaro, today Kotor, also played a significant role as a point of mediation between Rome and the Ottoman Empire. My intention in this essay is to present the many roles of Cattaro in the region, focusing in particular on its role in the maintenance of communication between Rome and missions to the Balkans. Cattaro never lost its Balkan orientation, even following the weakening of economic ties and the loss of its episcopal jurisdiction, which had extended over parishes in Serbia in the Middle Ages. Rather, in the sixteenth century it grew with the addition of a completely new element. From 1535 to 1786 Cattaro was the most important center of the postal service between Venice and Istanbul. As of 1578, the management of the Istanbul post became the responsibility of the Bolizza family. Thus the family came to establish a wide network of connections in the Balkans. I examine these connections and then offer an analysis of the plans concerning the settlement of the Jesuits in Cattaro.

This articlereviews the literary accounts of the migration and presentsthe relevantarchaeological evidence, with a focuson newmaterial from Troy. No onearea played a dominantrole in colonizing Aiolis, nor is sucha widespread colonizationsupported by the archaeologicalrecord. The most important and most powerful of these was a group of kingdoms that are attested in Hittite texts as the Arzawa Lands. Most scholars associate the development of these kingdoms with Luwian-speaking populations who had occupied large parts of Anatolia from (at least) the early second millennium BCE. The most enduring link between Anatolia's Late Bronze Age civilizations and their first- millennium-BCE successors is provided by the Lukka people, one of the Luwian-speaking population groups of southwestern Anatolia. They were almost certainly among the most important agents for the continuity and spread of Luwian culture in southern Anatolia throughout the first millennium BCE. During the Late Bronze Age, these regions were occupied by an array of states and population groups known to us from numerous references to them in the tablet archives of the Hittite capital Ḫattuša.

ROOSEVELT AND CHRISTINA LUKE 1Department of Archaeology and History of Art, Koç University, I˙stanbul, Turkey 2Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations, Koç University, I˙stanbul, Turkey 3Department of Archaeology, Boston University, USA This article presents previously unknown archaeological evidence of a mid-second-millennium BC kingdom located in central western Anatolia. Discovered during the work of the Central Lydia Archaeological Survey in the Marmara Lake basin of the Gediz Valley in western Turkey, the material evidence appears to correlate well with text-based reconstructions of Late Bronze Age historical geog- raphy drawn from Hittite archives. One site in particular—Kaymakçı—stands out as a regional capital and the results of the systematic archaeological survey allow for an understanding of local settlement patterns, moving beyond traditional correlations between historical geography and capital sites alone. Comparison with contemporary sites in central western Anatolia, furthermore, identifies material com- monalities in site forms that may indicate a regional architectural tradition if not just influence from Hittite hegemony. No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. The initiative came from King Alexander I Karadjordjević, while the Institute’s scholarly profile was created by Ratko Parežanin and Svetozar Spanaćević. The Institute published Revue internationale des Études balkaniques, which assembled most prominent European experts on the Balkans in various disciplines. Its work was banned by the Nazi occupation authorities in 1941. The Institute was not re-established until 1969, under its present-day name and under the auspices of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
