We noted with sadness in the last Packet that Sid Middleton has died. Sid was the postman for many years, and ran the Luppitt Post Office (opposite the pub). This was running when I arrived in the Parish and we were very sad when it had to close and we had to go elsewhere. Sadly, everything changes and my latest scare is the beginning of a threat from Royal Mail to rural daily deliveries.

However the sun is shining, and the Luppitt Madness is coming! Hooray! See page 17. But even more important is the Luppitt Packet Cream Tea on July 12th at Greenway Manor. See page 12. We are greatly looking forward to it! And in August the Flower Show is always a great event. The middle pages of this Packet are the programme and entry form. So have a look in the garden and decide which plants are good for the show!

Have a good month - Lindsey Dalgety

APPEALS APP/U1105/A/13/2207905 Land at Luppitt Wood Farm, Beacon, Honiton, Devon EX14 4TT Appeal made under section 78 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990against a refusal to grant planning permission (application Ref 13/1444/COU, dated 11 June 2013, was refused by EDDC 30 August 2013) The development proposed was change of use of former hunting lodge and store to dwelling. Appeal dismissed. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – launch events will be held on 4 until 8 pm on Thursday, 26 June and 10-12 am on Friday, 27 June 2014, and a survey will be posted to every household. Display material will be supplied, but will require additional local material and Parish Plan to be added and volunteers to man the stand. Terms of agreement, first payment and first steering group meeting for arrangement by new clerk. HIGHWAYS AND TRAFFIC Parishes Together – funding has been approved in the sum of £3722.60 following an application led by Luppitt Parish Council. Clerk will arrange a meeting with all parishes and DCC Highways shortly to see how the project will work and evidence can be gathered. Agreed to accept funding. Items to report; There are potholes being filled in the parish, outside Dolish and on Church Hill between the Church gate and the Car park – Ringborough to Fairview potholes are enormous (this is now a recently reclassified road from c12 to c9 – please bring a full lorry load of tarmac). Barnfield to Antelope Cottage edge of road deterioration, subsidence opposite Shelves Farm and water rising in centre of road, greensand under surface. Luppitt Common to Jacks House Corner is still a safety issue.

2 Items for lengthsman – clerk to check when the service is resuming – Shaugh Cross to Ford Bridge gutters need clearing, Pennythorne to Mountstephens easements, concrete gutters and rain drains need clearing when he does come.

FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS Report from P3 Co-ordinator – The bridge over the Ford at Greenlands has been partly mended.

ENVIRONMENT/COMMUNITY FACILITIES Community policing report – Since the last meeting there has been one crime a forced entry to a detached barn, this barn has been targeted before and the owner has now improved security. The meeting was reminded that there is a ‘Find my phone’ app for iphone that allows you to find your phone from a distance using GPS, there are similar apps for other smart phones.

Funding Application to Devon Remembers – (Cllr Pulman declared an interest as the memorial is on Church land, but believed to be owned by the people of the parish) the parish council would need to find 25% of the repairs to the war memorial, in order for a funding application to be submitted to the Community Council of Devon for the remainder to a grant restoration scheme. The total cost has been quoted at £3698, of which the parish council would need to find £924.50 (all plus VAT, which is reclaimable). A second quote will be sought, but it was agreed in principle that for the benefit of all parishioners, the access to the memorial should be improved; this grant will significantly help with the cost and should be applied for. Clerk to check the ownership and ensure that the Millennium Stone and War memorial are on the insurance schedule as necessary.

New Clerk – contract of employment to be signed. The council were reminded that in order to retain Quality Status and use the Power of Wellbeing the new clerk must become CILCA qualified as soon as possible.

Making it local – Meeting was attended by clerk and chairman.

4 EARL AND COUNTESS OF WESSEX FLY INTO LUPPITT

Story on page 6

5 EARL AND COUNTESS OF WESSEX FLY INTO LUPPITT

Did anyone spot the smart red helicopter with the royal crest emblazoned on its side flying low over Luppitt and heading for Otter Brewery on June 10 th ?

The story began back in March when Mary Ann McCaig took a phone call from John Cave – Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon. He had been asked by the Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, to recommend some outstanding Devon family enterprises that he and the Countess could visit on a tour he was planning to celebrate his 50th Birthday. Sir John felt that Luppitt’s Otter Brewery was an excellent example and wanted Mary Ann’s approval to put the Brewery on the list.

Mary Ann, a staunch supporter of the Royal family, had absolutely no hesitation in saying ‘yes!’. ‘I was so excited and absolutely brimming with pride’ she told the Packet ‘but I was sworn to secrecy – for security reasons I was not allowed to tell anyone other than those who were going to be involved in the visit’. Not surprisingly, all 34 of the local people who work at the brewery, many of whom live in Luppitt parish, wanted to be involved, as did all of Mary Ann and David’s large family.

Months of preparation then ensued starting with..where was the helicopter going to land?? Mary has to thank her neighbour Phillip Stevens who allowed it to land in his field just above the Brewery. The McCaigs then had several visits from the Lord Lieutenant’s office briefing them on all aspects of a Royal visit and from the local Police and security team who guard the Royals who went through every step of the planned tour to check for any risks. While all this was going on, the Brewery and the gardens were having a good spring clean so that everything would look at its absolute best.

On the day, excitement mounted at 10.35hrs as the helicopter came into view, landing with its lights on and then waltzing its way across the Stevens’ field towards the hedge where cars were waiting to take the party to the Brewery. ‘Only two Royals, but the support team was huge!’ said Mary. ‘But everyone was absolutely charming’.

Awaiting the Earl and Countess was an enthusiastic reception from the Brewery staff plus three generations of the McCaig family, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant – and local thatcher Trevor Berry who is currently re- thatching the farmhouse roof. From his precarious position high up on

6 the ridge, he had a birds-eye view of the approaching Royal party and earned himself a Royal wave! Young Beatrix Roberts, whose father Luke is a member of staff at the Brewery, presented the Countess with a bunch of flowers from the garden and the tour began.

‘The Earl and Countess were absolutely superb’ said Mary Ann ‘They chatted with everyone who wanted to be introduced to them – even down to my two year old grandson who wanted the Countess to admire his new shoes – which she promptly did’. The Royal party showed genuine interest in the whole beer making process as they toured the facility and both had a go at filling a barrel with beer Before they left, they sampled a glass of Otter Amber which they both enjoyed. The Countess left with a basket of gifts which the Brewery team felt epitomized rural Devon enterprise, such as Mathayes brown eggs, cupcakes and a DIY bacon curing kit from the Holt. Also, a card designed by Mary Ann’s daughter-in-law, Susan, which all the staff and family children had signed.

‘It was an unforgettable day,’ said Mary Ann, ‘and one which has made us so incredibly proud’.

18 GARDEN JOTTINGS by D.Street

I listen to the weather first thing. So it's going to be a dry day - "Oh good," I think, - and a few showers, possibly heavy and prolonged with thunder, especially later. "Par for the course," I decide, "after all." Well anyway rain makes everything in the garden grow. For what are plants but bags and tubes of chemicals wrapped up in water? Watery weeds are everywhere here at Catkins. Big Hen's just a scarlet head bobbing about amid the undergrowth. Any day I could meet Dr Livingstone trekking down under the oak trees at the bottom by the new path. As for cutting the grass - we're not posh enough to mow the lawn - that's definitely a soggy job. The gooseberry bushes too have been on the move. Foot long green shoots have suddenly appeared on them. Any berries that were there in April are pretty well hidden. You're supposed to prune these back about now, I think. Better not prune back the berries as well. And gooseberries are wild things with horrid spikes. Talking about wild things, there are some really wild gooseberries along the lane at Badgers Holt. Another fruit bush we grow - apart from black currants and raspberries and a blackberry that for some unexplained reason has stopped fruiting properly - is the antioxidant-rich blueberry. Blueberries hail from Canada and are frost hardy. They enjoy acid conditions like rhododendrons. Ours lives in a large tub and has spent the winters in the poly. Any late spring frost, it pops back inside, even if it is very heavy to move. In summer it lives in our fruit cage, where birds can't easily get at the fruit. Amazing how birds get in, then how hard it is to get them out. JCS of course thinks birds caught in the fruit cage are loads of fun. Well, I started these jottings last week in the rain. Now there's been a complete change to hot and dry. Anyone's guess what it'll be like when they fall through your letter box.

At an award ceremony at the Devon County Show in May, the Page-Turner family from Woodhayes Farm, Luppitt were presented with the best Farm Diversification at the Devon Farm Business Awards.

They have converted their redundant stone farm buildings into offices, and have recently converted a dutch barn into a conference centre and gallery. They also have a B &B business.

Our prayers were answered, and 19 th June dawned with mist over the Otter – a sure sign of a lovely hot day to come. We had a wonderful afternoon at Olive’s, with friends sharing in our cream tea. It was especially delightful to welcome back Rosemary Martin, one of our former members. We raised the splendid sum of £205.41 for Mothers’ Union work overseas.

The worldwide President, Lynne Tembey, is visiting our diocese during the first week in July. Two of our members, Olive Clapp and Pat Murray, have been invited to take tea with her and other long standing members, at the home of our Diocesan Secretary in Honiton.

All members are invited to a special service in Crediton on Friday 4 th July at 2:30 pm, followed by tea and cakes in the Boniface Centre. We have also been asked to bring our Branch Banners. I shall not be able to attend, as I am carrying out Grandmotherly duties in Manchester that week. If anyone is able to drive to Crediton with maybe one or two other members, perhaps they would let me know, so our Branch will be represented.

There will be no Branch meetings during July and August, but the Prayer Group will meet again at Hedgend Barton on Monday 1 st September at 2:30 pm. Jean Jones

27 28 THOUGHTS ON HISTORY by Heather

IN THE BEGINNING there were little green men. Back in prehistory from earliest times people searched for religion to explain things and for medicines to heal pain. The Greeks and Romans valued supernatural powers of plants, as you can see in "Making of the Countryside", one of my late husband's books. You will have read the Anglo-Saxon articles in the Packet. But did you know women held land in AD 800 under Anglo-Saxon law? During the Middle Ages in the twelfth century the French brought the Roman religion, referring frequently to Good and Evil. Yet in 1590 ladies in Scotland were killed by the King in a massive witch hunt, a country that was still only sparsely populated. By contrast some men in Egypt got high on sacred mushrooms. People had problems then. However by trial and error stinging nettles were found to be a versatile vegetable and foxgloves calmed heartbeat. In history, sixteenth century onwards to 2000+, most people have suffered from man-made problems, as there have always been scapegoats and stereotyping as to who might be responsible. This last century Marx blamed people who had money - them rich people - basically. Freud blamed everyone's mother. But his studies were restricted. For he interpreted the dreams of mainly middle-class women, and produced an artistic sketch of attribution of what and who to blame. In fact a whole Babel - talking shop of the chattering classes - of institutional blamers has doubled in the last twenty years to sell constant happiness, first dreamed up by Americans during the 1980s Pharmaceutical companies lobbying in Parliament and their advertising might has increased the power of doctors to prescribe drugs. Well, we are never going to stop wars. Must we have to go back to little green men? But there won't be any bird song, you know.
