MUSIC EDITOR know we all hate to say no. At least those of us who aren’t given to have Tad Hendrickson a serious mean streak. But sometimes we need to. Who am I speaking Iabout? Music directors. CONTRIBUTING EDITORS I’ll admit that there are lots of reasons to say no to a promoter – foremost Keith Zimmerman of which is if the record is lousy. But there’s an even better reason to say no: Kent Zimmerman if you have no intention of ever playing the record. CONTRIBUTING WRITER/ PHOTOGRAPHER I’ll admit my reasons for bringing this up are entirely self serving. The Tom Mallison scenario goes like this: PHOTOGRAPHY 1) Promoter calls lots of radio stations, some of whom tell said promoter Barry Solof that, why yes! we’re going to add the CD. 2) Radio station doesn’t play the CD and therefore it doesn’t get spins Founding Publisher: Tony Gasparre monitored by Mediaguide or doesn’t get reported. 3) Promoter calls JazzWeek editor complaining that we or Mediaguide ADVERTISING: Devon Murphy must be screwing up because stations say they are playing it and we don’t have Call (866) 453-6401 ext. 3 or spins, or ... email: [email protected] 4) Station swears to said promoter that they played it or reported it and we or Mediaguide must be screwing up. Rochester International Jazz Festival

usicians are a rare breed, but musician-businessman is an even rarer one, particularly one who is successful. MSaxophonist and producer and artistic director of the Rochester and Stockholm jazz festivals John Nugent qualifies for that elite group. Here we catch up with Nugent on the eve of the Rochester festival where he is putting the final touches on an event that many of will be enjoying when they come in for JazzWeek’s annual family reunion. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Looking at the line up, one question comes to mind: Is still getting paid in cash? John Nugent: No. (chuckles) he’s got different management these days. He’s represented by William Morris, so it’s a new day. Obviously he’s had some mis- guided representation in the past. He’s still the same James Brown, but now he’s got different business acumen. It’s very professional. continued ... jazzweek.com • June 12, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: John Nugent (continued)

I know was doing that up until the end. Yeah. But that’s not how we work. If we couldn’t do business the way we do business, then we wouldn’t have done the deal. What’s your connection to the Rochester area? Historically I’ve been through here many times as a sax player for the Orchestra. I came to Rochester in 1999 or 2000 as a clini- cian. At that time I was producing the Stockholm Jazz Festival, and it was asked of me to try and do an event in Rochester. So we met with a lot local politicians and business leaders. I’m an oddball in that I’m a working musi- cian who has played with a lot of the musicians who come and play at the festival because I’ve performed a lot at gigs around New York when I lived there for 13 years. Long story short, we decided to start this thing five years ago and its evolved into what I think is a world-class event. Absolutely, the talent is top flight. Sure is. I don’t want to pat myself on Ed Trefzger the back too much, but I spend a lot of Rochester International Jazz Festival producer and artistic director John Nugent an- time meticulously putting the line-up nounced the donation of $25,000 in tickets for Eastman Theatre performances to student together, figuring out what is going to music groups in the Rochester, N.Y., area by Bank of America. Joining Nugent (right) were go where, and trying to visualize what festival executive director Marc Iacona, Bank of America’s Laura Weinstein, and Rochester the audience hears as it moves from City School District School of the Arts’ Alan Tirre and some of his students. one event to the next. It’s also varied. I try and have as many styles as possible included within the genre of jazz. I’m not a purist. I come from modern creative jazz playing. My tenor playing comes out of Trane, and I studied with Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano and people like that. That’s where I’m coming from in my own musical head, but I try and think outside the box and cater to all the different musical tastes. Musicians are not typically known for their organizational skills. George Wein comes to mind as one of the rare examples of musician and business- man. I’ve been partners with George Wein. I learned a lot from George. I’ve pro-

duced tours with George. I come from a very musical family. I’m from New- foundland, although I’m a dual citizen of Canada and the . My grandfather used to import Steinway and Selmer saxophones from New York. He went to 52ⁿd Street in the ‘40s and heard Bird play, and he said to me: “Kid, if you ever want to do anything in the music business move to New York.” As a child I watched the business of music all around me. Then I went out with the Woody Herman Orchestra, and I was road manager with the band when I played with them. The funny thing is, when you make a com- mission on the engagement, it tends to pay more than the band is paying you to play the gig. I got a taste of that at an early age and then in ’94 I started my own booking agency in Brook- lyn. I represented a lot groups in the area and did about 40 tours. I repre- sented , Slide Hampton, Frank Foster, the Vanguard Orches- tra, Blue Note All-Stars and tons of other groups. Then I had a chance to invest in the Stockholm festival in 2000 and our company bought half the event. So I’m not producing tours any more. It was a natural evolution, how the whole thing took place. I get into the right side of the brain when I’m on the bandstand, and the left side of the brain when I’m in front of the computer. I hear you’re a fixture at the late Ed Trefzger night jam sessions. The RIJF has drawn huge crowds each year since its start in 2002. Last year the line for John Scofield began to form more than an hour before the event and the line stretched Every night. And I’m handing some around the block past the Eastman Theatre. guys their lunch too. No, we have some fun. All these people like , Donny McCaslin and Chris Potter come in and they think: “This guy just paid me, and now he’s playing like that?” We just hit, man. We play tunes and have a gas. What has been the response in the by the Rochester community? I’ve never seen a community more buzzed about a festival than Rochester. After this, is it vacation time? I go fly-fishing in Newfoundland for a week and disconnect from the world. Then I come back and start in on Stockholm, which is the 18th – 22ⁿd of July. Are you thinking about expanding and doing other festivals?

continued ... jazzweek.com • June 12, 2006 JazzWeek 13 Industry Q&A: John Nugent (continued)

Absolutely, my partner Marc Iacona and I are looking. He’s my 50-50 partner, buddy and confidante. We’re certainly thinking about going into other mar- kets. We’d like to go to Providence or Charlotte, or other second- or third-tier markets because they don’t usually have quality arts festivals like we have here in Rochester. Why pick smaller markets? I don’t want to go to the big cities and compete with the big boys. I have a niche market mentality, and there are definitely cities that are looking for ways to bring tourists into the community. I’m not interested in street fights with big promoters, and that happens in big territories like New York, Chicago or Mi- ami. I’m not starting a new festival tomorrow, but we’re thinking about it. The smaller markets mean it’s more personal. I believe its all about taking care of everyone you deal with – whether it’s the music on the bandstand, taking care of musicians you are playing with, tak- ing care of the audience in the seats. It’s a well-rounded circle effect. I’m like a mother here: I take care of everybody and I delegate. But I oversee the whole thing and make sure that everything that needs to be taken care of is taken care of. JW
