K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 FOREWORD Salinity is a significant challenge and poses risks to sustainable development of Coastal regions of India. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt.

  • A Geomorphic Study of the Incidence of Mud Along the Coastal Stretch Between Kelshi and Anjarle, Maharashtra Abstract
A GEOMORPHIC STUDY OF THE INCIDENCE OF MUD ALONG THE COASTAL STRETCH BETWEEN KELSHI AND ANJARLE, MAHARASHTRA ABSTRACT INDIA has an extensive coastline of about 7500 km and the physical regime of the Indian shoreline is characterized by various forms like headlands, promontories, rocky shores, sand spits, barrier beaches, open beaches, embayments, estuaries, inlets, bays, marshy lands and offshore islands. Konkan extends from Damanganga River in the north to the Terekhol River in the south. The wide coastal belt is not uniform and varies between 40 and 50 km along the region. All along the region the shoreline is broken by frequent headlands and promontories, which are the sites of steep sea cliffs, sandy pocket beaches, drowned river valleys, small tidal inlets and major river creeks. There is almost a regular sequence of headlands and tidal inlets. Narrow, flat and low shoreline terraces are covered with thin coastal alluviums which border the tidal inlets. These land facets have contributed immensely to distinctiveness of the Konkan coast. Mud along Konkan The occurrence of mud was not very common along the Konkan coast of Maharashtra until recently. Many beaches such as Navapur (19° 46£), Revas (18°49J, Revdanda(18°32$, Shrivardhan (18°03j§, and Kelshi (17*56$ have however started showing signs of mud deposition since last decade or so. It is 1 not easy to trace the source of this mud. Many sources such as river flow, dredging in the near shore areas, reclamation of bays and scouring of continental shelf are normally suggested . The very existence of mud on intertidal beaches and in tidal inlets suggests a local fluctuation of sea level, variation in climatic conditions and decrease in tidal component.

Mhaske Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, VJTI, Mumbai-400019, Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT Verandha Ghat Section is connecting shield-plateau region with Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB) through Bhor Ghat area. Therefore, it is considered as a lifeline of Bhor (in Pune district) and Mahad (Raigarh District of Konkan), of western Maharashtra corridor. Geologically, this region belongs to Ambenali and Mahabaleshwar – Poladpur formation. The area shows thick flows of the Deccan Trap basalt of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age. All the rock flows of this formation, exposed along this highway are in the form of rock cutting along the Pandharpur-Mahad Maharashtra State Highway -70, in the 74 km Ghat section from Bhor (part of Sahyadri Uplands, from Pune district) onwards and before Mahad (part of Konkan Coastal Belt from Raigarh district) of Maharashtra, are highly susceptible for landslide activity. A detailed exploration was carried out on all along the road section started from Bhor city and it extends up to the Varandah village, at the foot hill of Sahyadri, in Konkan region. In the present context, detailed investigations of the mass movement were carried out to prepare the map of highly vulnerable locations, in the study area.

Present study was carried out by conducting surveys for locating their nesting sites along coast of Ratnagiri district and 12 nests of White-bellied Sea Eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster at different sites along Velas to Dabhol were studied. Various ecological parameters such as nesting tree species, nesting tree height, nesting tree GBH, nest height, geo-coordinates, distance from coast, disturbance level were considered. WBSE was found to be most abundantly nesting (N =12) on Casuarina equisetifolia tree which, accounts to 83% of the total nesting trees and only 02 nests, just 17% of the total nesting trees studied, were on Sterculia foetida. In most cases, it was observed that WBSEs prefer nest trees with larger GBH as compared to same tree species of smaller girth. Location of nest from the supratidal mark was measured to study nesting preference about distance from the sea and we found that, the nearest nest was 30 m away from the coast and the farthest one was at a distance of around 900 m.
