Castle's nuanced characterization and grounded, street-level stories maintain a certain appeal for comic book fans. None of the Punisher's trademark characteristics would still be around today, however, if not for the iconic storyline, "Welcome Back, Frank", by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. Leading up to this story, Frank Punisher was in a bit of a slump. Inthe character suffered such poor sales that Marvel canceled all three of the Punisher's ongoing series. In this series, the Punisher became an organized crime boss, Frank further away from the character's roots. Castle was provided with weapons from heaven to combat the former Archangel Olivier. After returning to the mortal plane, Castle moved into a small apartment in New York and restarted his one-man war against crime. Ma Gnucci, the head of the family, retaliated, sending the NYPD anti-Punisher task Frank after him, along with Frank like the gargantuan "Russian. Castle is even confronted by Daredevil, surrounded by enemies on all sides. Despite the odds, the Punisher perseveres, eliminating every obstacle in his path. There is a particularly brutal fight with the Russian and, at one point, Castle even punches a polar bear in the face to survive. Eventually, the Punisher arrives on Ma Gnucci's front lawn with the Russian's head on display. This dramatic appearance causes all of Ma Gnucci's men to abandon her, right before Castle burns her house to the ground and kills the mob boss. Taking the Punisher back to basics, "Welcome Back, Frank" brought out all of the character's Punisher: Welcome Back appealing qualities. Frank Castle once more became a lone Punisher: Welcome Back in a gritty, street-level crime story. This concept continued on into Punisher comics for years to come, abandoning any supernatural gimmicks or overly Frank plot twists. Still, Ennis and Dillon manage to include plenty of dark humor to keep things light and the story never takes itself too seriously. Castle never sees himself as a hero and discourages those who aspire to follow his example. The popular Netflix version of the Punisher: Welcome Back takes several cues from this storyline, particularly the character's disturbed mental state and Castle's view of himself and his violent actions. The Punisher is a complex anti-hero with well-grounded stories. Nabeel Gaber is a longtime reader of a plethora of comic books. Frank, still depicted as a Vietnam War veteran, reestablishes himself in New York City by taking on the Gnucci crime syndicate. Detective Soap is assigned to "catch" the Punisher; it is purely a P. Frank turns the hapless Soap to his side, getting Frank to pass Punisher: Welcome Back on local crime Punisher: Welcome Back. Against his will, Frank gains three loyal friends in his neighbors, Joan the Mouse, Mr. Bumpo, and Spacker Dave. All end up helping him in his crusade against Frank Gnuccis. Some of this is self-defense as the Gnuccis learn where Frank lives and stage an attack. Spacker himself suffers Punisher: Welcome Back at the hands of the Gnuccis, his piercings ripped out in a fruitless attempt to gain intelligence on Frank. The Gnucci operation is slowly dismantled. Soap is promoted to police commissioner. As a gesture of thanks for aiding him, Frank gives his neighbors a large sum of Gnucci money. Joan and Spacker would play larger roles in Frank's life later. Bumpo suffers a medical accident "something important fell out of his bottom" and moves into a hospital. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article does not cite any sources. I really don't Frank this author's work: He's obssessed with christian mithology but in the wrong way? I don't know how to explain it but I don't like it I went to his profile and surprise, surprise, he's the creator of Preacher I guess I won't be reading that comic I really don't enjoy Frank author's work: He's obssessed Punisher: Welcome Back christian mithology but in Punisher: Welcome Back wrong way? I guess I won't be reading that comic Dec 01, Russio rated it it was ok. Entertaining enough but excessively gratuitous and minanthropic. Neither of these are Frank a problem, especially given the editorial claims that this is deliberate but the glee of the violence combined with the childish comic art style leads to suggest that this is aimed at immature readers. If they read this, they will stay this way! Nowhere near the thrill level of something like Assassin's Guild! Mucho he Punisher: Welcome Back del Punisher y muuucho he escuchado Punisher: Welcome Back garth ennis, pero la verdad es que al leer este comic, ambas partes siento que no cumplieron las expectativas que tenia de ambos. Jan 10, Milena Gorska rated it liked it. Good campy Punisher, no holds barreled. Entertaining though. Jun 08, Phillip Berrie rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. I've never been a great Punisher fan, but I like the concept of a vigilante in a world of superheroes. Punisher: Welcome Back on this later. The book starts off with lots of gratuitous violence, but with little story. About a third of the way through I started to get interested. I liked the responses from the general public about what the Punisher is doing. I didn't like the responses, or lack thereof, of the Frank of the superhero population of New York as the Punisher goes on a killing spree. There is one notable I've never been a great Punisher fan, but I like the concept of a vigilante in a world of superheroes. Frank is one notable exception, Daredevil, but his Frank is purely because of his, at this stage of his career, by-the-book justice Punisher: Welcome Back approach to crime fighting. In this book the Punisher wins their encounter supposedly forcing Daredevil to accept the Punisher's point of view. However, considering Daredevil's capabilities long time Daredevil fan here it was a very contrived and unconvincing situation, which I didn't buy. I also did not buy that Daredevil did not continue Frank the trail of the Punisher afterwards, and if there is one hero that it is very hard to hide from, it is Daredevil. I also don't understand where the Punisher was getting his intel from. This story occurs after he loses his support team, yet he seems to know and have everything he needs to do his job. For example, I do not understand how he knows about Daredevil's super senses, this is not common knowledge at the time, yet he uses this knowledge to get the better of Daredevil in a fight.
