The Locations and Relocations of Lusophone Studies josiah blackmore harvard university “ usophone studies,” or the range of topics and methodologies centered on Lthe study of the Portuguese-speaking world, is a relatively recent disciplinary designation with origins in Portuguese studies and Luso-Brazilian studies. As a field, Lusophone studies encompasses the study of Portugal and Portuguese- speaking countries and communities outside of Portugal, such as those in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea) and in Asia (e.g., Macau, Timor, and India) but is typically exclusive of Brazil. Lusophone studies, therefore, takes as its collective matter of analysis a vast geographical arena south and east of Portugal with a variety of cultures and national and ethnic identities that at one point existed under the umbrella of Portuguese colonialism. The extended geographical arena of the field also supports a practice of interdisciplinary scholarship that reaches out- side of traditional literary studies and history to include cinema studies, dias- poric studies, or gender and sexuality studies that are commensurate with developments in other humanities disciplines. The current configurations of Lusophone studies raise the question of disci- plinary labels and scholarly practices, which in turn reveal a politics of identity and even a struggle for survival of a comparatively small field in the North Amer- ican academy. Entrenched biases or geopolitical realities have long affected Luso- phone studies, not to mention the name of the field itself. On the one hand, shifting nomenclatures reveal a consciousness of collective identities and affilia- tions to national, political, or cultural realities, while on the other hand they can act as strategic attempts to delineate the specific national and cultural purviews of study that define the discipline. -

Signed: Date: 19 May 2012 I To my newly born baby II ABSTRACT The twentieth century saw the spread of Western art music across the world as Western ideology and values acquired increasing dominance in the global order. How did this process occur in China, what complexities does it display and what are its distinctive features? This thesis aims to provide a detailed and coherent understanding of the Westernisation of Chinese music in the 20th century, focusing on the ever-changing relationship between music and social ideology and the rise and evolution of national identity as expressed in music. This thesis views these issues through three crucial stages: the early period of the 20th century which witnessed the transition of Chinese society from an empire to a republic and included China’s early modernisation; the era from the 1930s to 1940s comprising the Japanese intrusion and the rising of the Communist power; and the decades of economic and social reform from 1978 onwards. The thesis intertwines the concrete analysis of particular pieces of music with social context and demonstrates previously overlooked relationships between these stages. It also seeks to illustrate in the context of the appropriation of Western art music how certain concepts acquired new meanings in their translation from the European to the Chinese context, for example modernity, Marxism, colonialism, nationalism, tradition, liberalism, and so on. -

On the premises of the existence of a so-called ‘global culture’, cities tend to reinvent themselves by promoting various (and eventually competing) self-definitions. In the case of Lisbon, this tendency is accompanied by a seemingly increased desire to connect (or re-connect) with the Lusophone world, eventually informing Lisbon’s self-images as an inclusive and multicultural city. In this process, new forms of ethnicity may gain visibility in the marketing of Luso-world music (or world mu- sic as practiced in the Portuguese-speaking countries). At the ho- rizon of imagined cities as ‘transcultural megacities’, music tends to gain agency in the promotion of senses of place and belonging, in and to the city. Introduction: The Lusophone World at War, 1914-1918 and Beyond Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses1 On March 9, 1916, Germany declared war in Portugal. In response, Lisbon sent a fighting force, the Corpo Expedicionário Português [CEP], to France, where it held a portion of the Western Front until April 9, 1918. In addition, a number of smaller expeditions were dispatched to secure Mozambique and, if possible, participate in the conquest of German East Africa. Both theatres of war were a source of frustration for the Portuguese, and participation in the conflict fell far short of the hopes deposited in it by its defenders. As interventionist politicians slowly lost control over the country’s destiny after the war’s end, the conflict faded from the public’s awareness, its memory kept alive essentially among those who had direct experience with combat. For decades, Portugal’s participation in World War I was generally ignored, or reduced to a historical cul-de-sac, a pointless, if expensive, military episode. However, our understanding of the conflict’s impact on Portugal and its importance in the subsequent course of the country’s history has increased immeasurably over the past twenty years. The centenary commemorations for both the Republic, in 2010, and the Great War itself, starting in 2014, have naturally contributed to this process. In March of 2016, on the hundredth anniversary of Portugal’s intervention in the conflict, a colloquium was held at Brown University as an attempt to insert Portugal’s war experience into a wider, but intimately related, context: that of the Lusophone world. -

II Isidor Marí Globalisation and linguistic rights Towards a universal framework of linguistic sustainability1 Like many others, Mexican society and Catalan society, both of them engaged in the task of conserving their linguistic diversity in today’s changing world, are united in their concerns about the evolution and future prospects of linguistic diversity in the world. Their agreement on this was already evident throughout the process of preparing the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights, which was proclaimed in Barcelona in 19962. Since then it has been a country. For ages Brazil has represented the great escape to a prehistoric, tropical heaven, igniting the Western imagination like no other South American country. Brazil had its unique attributes including having had a reigning monarch and an empire that boasts of a relatively bloodless independence from Portugal. Brazilians did not have to fight tooth and nail nor did they create any type revolt. The King himself declared in the Grito do Ipiranga, "By my blood, by my honor, and by God: I will make Brazil free" with the motto "Independence or Death!" Every year, thousands get together in a mad passion to proudly celebrate Brazilian Independence Day. A country of mythic proportions, people gather in the streets celebrating with banners, balloons and streamers. For those that do not know anything about Brazilian culture, here is an opportunity to go to one of the events, get in the green and yellow mood, and see the richness of Brazilian art and hear the variety of sounds, rhythms and styles that exist in our repertoire.
