Lieutenant Mike Plehn is the 17th President of the National Defense University. As President of NDU, he oversees its five component colleges that offer graduate-level degrees and certifications in joint professional military education to over 2,000 U.S. military officers, civilian government officials, international military officers and industry partners annually.

Raised in an Army family, he graduated from Miami Southridge Senior High School in 1983 and attended the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with Military Distinction and a degree in Astronautical Engineering in 1988. He is a Distinguished Graduate of Squadron Officer School as well as the College of Naval Command and Staff, where he received a Master’s Degree with Highest Distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies. He also holds a Master of Airpower Art and Science degree from the School of Advanced Airpower Studies, as well as a Master of Aerospace Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Lt Gen Plehn has extensive experience in joint, interagency, and special operations, including: Middle East Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, and four tours at the Combatant Command level to include U.S. European Command, U.S. Central Command, and twice at U.S. Southern Command, where he was most recently the Military Deputy Commander. He also served on the Air Staff in Strategy and Policy and as the speechwriter to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

Lt Gen Plehn is a master navigator with 2,200 flight hours in the AC-130H, AC-130U, U-28, MQ-1B, MQ-9, and F-16D. He has more than 350 combat hours supporting operations over Bosnia, Somalia, Haiti, , and . He has commanded special operations units at the squadron, , and levels, and was formerly the Deputy Commander of Air Force Special Operations Command.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Aerial Achievement Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Gallant Unit Citation, and the Medal for Distinguished Service to the Colombian Military Forces.

An Eagle Scout and avid reader, he speaks passable Spanish. In their quiet time, Mike and his wife enjoy watching ice hockey and providing staff assistance to their two cats.

SENIOR FELLOWS JOHN F. KELLY GENERAL USMC (RETIRED)

Former Commander, US Southern Command

General Kelly served as the Commander, Southern Command, Miami, FL, from November 2012 until January 2016. He retired from active duty after 45+ years of service to the nation as a United States Marine—both as an enlisted infantryman and infantry officer—on 1 February 2016. Born and raised in Boston, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970. He was released from active duty as a sergeant of infantry in 1972. Following graduation from the University of Massachusetts (Boston) in 1975, he was commissioned a in the Marine Corps and assigned an infantry occupational specialty. In addition to attaining an MA degree from Georgetown University in National Security Affairs (1984), and an MS from the National Defense University in National Security (1995), his formal military education includes (1976), the U.S. Army’s Advanced Infantry Officer’s Course (1981), the Marine Corp’s Command & Staff College (1991) and School for Advance Warfighting (1992), the National War College (1995), Capstone (2004), Joint Force Land Component Commander Course (2006), and Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course (2007). In his many assignments to the Fleet Marine Force as a and field grade officer, General Kelly qualified in various infantry battalion staff assignments as well as commanding a number of infantry platoons and companies. He also commanded the 1st Light Armored Vehicle Battalion (LAR), Camp Pendleton, CA, as a major and lieutenant . Finally, during formative years he was a proud “sea going” Marine serving aboard the aircraft carriers Forrestal and Independence (1979-1980). General Kelly was also a trainer and an educator at The Basic School, Quantico, VA, first as the head of the Offensive Tactics Section, Tactics Group, and later as the Director of the Infantry Officer Course (1987- 1990). After three years of instructing, shaping and mentoring some of the very finest young men and women this country produces to be Marine Officers, he then attended the Marine Corps Command & Staff College and the School for Advanced Warfare, both located at Quantico (1990-1992). After completing two years in command of 1st LAR (1992-1994) and duty under instruction at the National War College, he was selected by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to serve as his personal liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives, Capitol Hill (1995-1999). Promoted to colonel while on the Hill he next served on joint duty as the Special Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander (Generals Clarke & Ralston), Europe, Mons, . Returning to the U.S in 2001 he was assigned to a third tour of duty at Camp Lejeune, now as the Assistant Chief of Staff for operations (G-3) with the 2nd Marine Division. Then the Trade Towers and pentagon were attacked. Selected for that year he was transferred for duty with the 1st Marine Division as the assistant division commander assisting the commanding general in preparing the unit for the war we knew was coming. The majority of the two years with the division (2002-2004) was spent fighting in Iraq most notably participating in the “March Up” to , then as Commander, “Task Force ,” that liberated the Baghdad – Tikrit – corridor of operations, then back with the division main executing counterinsurgency operations in al Anbar Province including the cities of , , Hit, Rawah, and al Qaim. Returning home from the war zone General Kelly was assigned duties as the Legislative Assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and Deputy Assistant Legislative Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy (2004-2007). During this time in gthe penta on General Kelly was promoted to major general and returned to Camp Pendleton, CA. He now assumed duties as the Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) deploying back to Iraq in early 2008 for a 12+ month tour in the west (al Anbar and western Ninewa Provinces). Almost immediately after his return in 2009 General Kelly was nominated, confirmed by the senate, and promoted to lieutenant general. He was privileged to take command of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North, N ew Orleans, LA (2009-2011). A second assignment as a lieutenant general brought him back to as the Senior Military Assistant to Defense Secretaries Gates and Panetta until October 2012. Again confirmed for promotion he was subsequently promoted to t he rank of general assuming command of United States Southern Command on November 19, 2012. General Kelly relinquished command on 12 January 2016 and transferred to the retired list on 1 February. On 20 January 2017, having been previously confirmed by the U.S. Senate for the position, he assumed duties as the Secretary, Department of Homeland Security. On 31 July 2017 Secretary Kelly was asked by the president to assume the duties of the White House Chief-of-Staff, a position he held until January 2019. PATRICK Z. Command Sergeant Major Patrick Z. Alston is employed as a Senior Fellow for the National Defense University’s Capstone and Keystone programs. He is also a Senior Consultant with Burlington Capital Corporation, a diverse investment management firm located in Omaha, Nebraska.

CSM Pat Alston is a native of Columbus, . He is a graduate of Columbus High School. After graduation, he subsequently enlisted into the United States Army where he completed Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

His initial assignment was at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, as a Medical Specialist. Subsequent assignments include Medical Specialist with 3rd Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, and 82nd Airborne Division. KEYSTONE STAFF Gerard “Gerry“ M. Mauer, Jr. Director Capstone, Keystone, Pinnacle

Rear Admiral Mauer retired from the Navy in March 2008 after over 31 years of service, which included extensive experience in fleet operations, resource management, technical innovation, Joint Professional Military Education (JPME), interagency coordination, and leading organizational change in NATO and joint commands.

From 2008 to 2011, RADM Mauer was a Group Vice President for Sabre Systems Inc. He was responsible for developing then implementing the corporate strategic plan and managing the Southeast Region’s profit and loss operations, its contracts, corporate business development, human resources programs, and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) level III attainment. After leaving Sabre Systems, RADM Mauer had positions as an Associate with Burdeshaw Associates, as a Senior Analyst for Wikistrat, as a Board member and Board Tresurer for the Navy Safe Harbor Foundation, and as a representative and the national Co-Chair for the US Global Leadership Coalition’s Veterans for Smart Power.

Admiral Mauer’s last position in the Navy was from 2006 to 2008, when he served as the Commandant, Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF). He was responsible for executing the congressionally mandated and accredited master’s degree senior Professional Military Education curriculum. As a university leader, he directly supported the direction of the National Defense University and was a key member in the development of the University’s strategic plan.

From 2003 to 2006, he served as the NATO Allied Command Transformation’s Director, Joint Experimentation, Exercises, and Assessment, where he developed and implemented NATO’s largest Concept Development and Experimentation program. The scope included creating NATO’s transformation strategic vision and aligning the vision with its concepts and requirements. As a result of his initiatives, NATO rapidly implemented new processes, policies, and systems in support of its forces in Afghanistan and Iraq as well new capabilities to support its political and military infrastructure in NATO headquarters.

From 2001 to 2003, he was the Deputy, Directorate for Information Operations (J39/DDIO), Joint Staff Director of Operations (J-3) where he was responsible for direct coordination with the Office of the Secretary of Defense staff, Combatant Commands, and interagency organizations in their global information operations. In this capacity, his responsibilities also included supervision and operational coordination of the Joint Staff’s Special Technical Operations information system and its programs.

Admiral Mauer graduated from Villanova University and the Naval Postgraduate School. He was a Naval Aviator who commanded Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadrons SEVEN (HS-7) and TEN (HS-10) in addition to assignment as the Commanding Officer of USS NASSAU (LHA 4). He has vast experience at sea with deployments to the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and Arabian Gulf. Ashore assignments included: Naval Postgraduate School student, Assistant Program Manager for the Naval Air Systems Command SH-60F/H helicopter program (PMA 266), and Training Officer and Instructor Pilot in Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron ONE (HS-1). He started with Capstone in August of 2016.

Clifford E. Wheeler, Jr. (Cliff) is the Program Manager for the Keystone and Pinnacle programs at CAPSTONE. He is responsible for curriculum development and execution of both courses, to include; planning, administration, assessment of educational objectives and student learning, and review and revision of course curricula as needed.

Cliff is a native of Woodville, MS. He retired from the Army in November 2014 after 28 years in active and reserve service. He began his military service in November 1986 as a 19D Cavalry Scout in the Mississippi . Commissioned as an Armor officer and Distinguished Military Graduate from the Ole Miss Army ROTC program, he entered active duty at Ft. Knox, KY in September 1988.

Cliff served in both staff and leadership positions in Armor and Cavalry units in , , , and Fort Stewart, Georgia. He commanded at the platoon, company, and battalion levels, culminating with command of the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 3rd Infantry Division from 2006-2008. He served two tours in Iraq; as Brigade Executive Officer for 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division (2003-2004) in Baghdad and as Squadron Commander of 5-7 Cavalry in Ramadi, Fallujah, and Arab Jabour.

Key staff assignments include the Lieutenants’ and Captains’ Career Manager at Armor Branch, Army Personnel Command; Exercise Planner at V Corps G3 in , Germany; analyst for the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review at Department of the Army, G8; and Chief of Officer Distribution at Army Human Resources Command. His final assignment was Deputy Director for Overseas Planning and International Engagement at CAPSTONE, National Defense University.

From 2015 to 2018, Cliff was an organizational and leadership consultant and later an Assistant Vice President and Program Manager at Command Security Corporation in Herndon, Virginia.

Among Cliff’s military awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Unit Commendation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Mississippi, and Masters of Science degrees in Adult and Continuing Education from State University, and in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.

Cliff is a passionate volunteer for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, the Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park, the National Museum of the United States Army, and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (T.A.P.S.). Sergeant Major Adams enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1993 and attended at MCRD Parris Island, SC, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Upon completion, he attended the School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, for the MOS of 0311, Infantry Rifleman. Sergeant Major Adams reported to 1st Battalion, 3rd where he participated in several Unit Deployment Programs to Okinawa. In November 1997, he was promoted to Sergeant and received an honorable discharge. Sergeant Major Adams reported to 4th Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion in Marietta, Georgia as a stinger gunner reservist. He reenlisted back on active duty in May 2000 and attended the Ammunition Handlers course at , . Upon graduation, he was assigned the MOS of 2311, Ammunition Technician. He reported to Ammunition Company, 2nd Supply Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC and was promoted to Staff Sergeant on 1 January 2001. In February 2003, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In October 2003, Sergeant Major Adams reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD Parris Island, SC and was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Series Gunnery Sergeant. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in December 2005. Upon completion of drill instructor duty, Sergeant Major Adams reported to Ammunition Company, 2nd Supply Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.2, upon return, he was frocked to First Sergeant in February 2009. Sergeant Major Adams reported to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines (WARLORDS) as the Company F First Sergeant. He deployed to South Helmand Province, Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom 9.2. In March 2011, Sergeant Major Adams reported to 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD Parris Island, SC, as the Company H First Sergeant. In May 2012, he was assigned as the Company I First Sergeant, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. In January 2013, he was assigned as the Headquarters Company First Sergeant, Headquarters and Service Battalion. In June 2014, Sergeant Major Adams was frocked to his present rank and reported to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron (HMLAT) 303. In February 2016, Sergeant Major Adams reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) 39. Sergeant Major Adams reported to Marine Corps Security Force Regiment in September 2017 as the Regimental Sergeant Major. Sergeant Major Adams assumed his current post as the Marine Corps Installations National Capital Region-Marine Corps Base Quantico Sergeant Major in June 2020. Sergeant Major Adams has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Park University and continues his studies for a Bachelors Degree. Sergeant Major Adams’ personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.

COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR ROBERT ARMSTRONG III USASOAC Command Sergeant Major Assumed Responsibility September 25, 2020

Command Sergeant Major Rob Armstrong is a native of Man- ahawkin, New Jersey and enlisted in the Army July of 1997 as an Aircraft Power Plant Repairer. He attended Basic Training at Fort Sill, and Advanced Individual Training at , Virginia.

Command Sergeant Major Armstrong has served in every enlisted leadership position from team leader to Brigade Command Sergeant Major. His stateside assignments include Georgia, Fort Hood Texas, Fort Campbell Kentucky, and Lewis-McChord. His overseas assignments include Korea and Germany. He has deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He served as the Command Sergeant Major for 4/160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Abn) at Joint Base Lewis-Mc- Chord. He most recently served as the Command Sergeant Major for 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division.

Command Sergeant Major Armstrong’s military education includes the Basic Leader course, Advanced Leader course, Senior Leader course, Airborne school, Air Assault school, SERE Level C, Enlisted Green Platoon, Battle Staff course, First Sergeants course, and the Sergeants Major Academy. His civilian education includes a Bachelors of Aero- nautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and a Masters of Arts in Exec- utive Leadership from Liberty University.

CMDCM (AW/SW/IW) ROBERT L. BARBER JR

Master Chief Robert Leon Barber Jr is third generation military and a native of Sylvester, Georgia. He enlisted in the and reported for basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois in December 1995.

Master Chief Barber completed Aviation Electronics Technician “A” school located in Millington, Tennessee in September of 1996, before reporting to his first command, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In July 1998 he reported to his first Sea Duty assignment at EA-6B Van Operational Detachment (VANOPDET) Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington. While assigned to VANOPDET he deployed to Saudi Arabia, Germany and Turkey. His subsequent sea duty and overseas assignments include: Sea Control Squadron 32 (VS-32) deploying twice aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), Patrol Reconnaissance Squadron Four Seven (VP-47), where he deployed to , Africa and Iceland, and USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78).

Throughout his career, he completed deployments in the Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Fleet areas of responsibilities and participated in Operations Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve and Dynamic Force Employment.

His shore duty assignments include two tours at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Fleet Readiness Center Southeast in Jacksonville, Florida.

In 2016 he was selected as a Command Master Chief. In May of 2017 he reported to Strike Fighter Squadron Two-One-One (VFA-211) in Oceana, Virginia, where he served as the Command Master Chief from May 2017 to November 2019.

He reported to Commander Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic in Oceana, Virginia in November 2019, where he currently serves as the Wing Command Master Chief. Master Chief Barber is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 192) Command Master Chief Capstone Course (Class 170) and Enlisted Leadership Symposium (Norfolk).

Master Chief Barber’s personal awards include the Enlisted Aviation Warfare, Enlisted Surface Warfare and Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist; Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Three Awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Seven Awards) and various unit and campaign awards.

BIOGRAPHY

CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT JAMES “JIMMY” BURMEISTER CMSgt James “Jimmy” Burmeister is the Command Chief Master Sergeant at , Travis AFB, CA. As Command Chief, he is responsible for advising the commander on mission effectiveness, professional development, military readiness, training, utilization, health, morale, and welfare of the largest Air Force Reserve Associate Wing in the nation.

Chief Burmeister is a native of Roseville, CA. He began his enlistment in the Air Force in December 1993. He has served on several statuses to include Active Duty, Drill Status Guardsman, Traditional Reservist and Individual Mobilization Augmentee. Chief Burmeister has been activated and mobilized to Baghdad in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Before assuming his current position, he served as the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Command Chief Master Sergeant, Air Force Space Command, , Colo. In his civilian capacity, Chief Burmeister owns and operates an electrical engineering firm employing twenty-six professionals. Chief Burmeister also maintains a second business as an owner of a Hydro- Electric Power Plant in the Northern California Foothills.

Command Sergeant Major Shawn F. Carns enlisted in the Army in July 1992 as an Infantryman from Indiana, PA. After completion of Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, GA, he was assigned to 2-5 Calvary, Fort Hood, TX.

CSM Carns has served in every key leadership position in the Infantry from Team Leader to CSM. His first assignment was 2- 5 Calvary, Fort Hood, TX; he served as a Team Leader and Squad Leader in 1-325 Air, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Long Range Surveillance Team Leader, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, South, Korea; Ranger Instructor at 4th Ranger Training Battalion, Fort Benning, Georgia; Platoon Sergeant, 1-8 Infantry, Fort Carson, Colorado, First Sergeant at 1-8 Infantry, Fort Carson, Colorado. In January 2014 he was selected as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major for 3-15 Infantry, Fort Stewart, Georgia. In June 2016 he was selected as the Brigade Command Sergeant Major for Joint Task Force-B in Honduras, then assigned as the Command Sergeant Major Development Program (CSMDP) Lead at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon departing Fort Leavenworth, KS, Command Sergeant Major Carns served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa and currently is the 2ID CSM.

CSM Carns’ military education includes all Noncommissioned Officer Education system courses. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy (Non Resident 39). Chief Master Sergeant Steve C. Cenov is the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the , , . Serving as the wing's senior enlisted leader, of one of the largest fighter wings in the United States Air Force, he is the principle advisor to the commander on matters influencing the combat readiness, training, education, and resiliency of the wing. In addition, he is responsible for the management of all installation support functions to include communications, contracting, engineering, environmental, law enforcement, logistics, medical, security, services and force support for more than 9,000 assigned Army and Air Force personnel, 51,000 dependents, retirees and veterans. In addition, the wing also provides BOS-I support to U.S. Army Central Command, 9th Air Forces Central, 15th Air Force, , 495th Fighter Group, 30 tenant and 35 geographically separated units across nine states.

Chief Cenov enlisted in the Air Force in May of 1999 and his background includes various duties in the security forces career field and as a Group Superintendent of a Nuclear Weapon Systems Security Group and Munitions Maintenance Group. His vast leadership experience while serving at squadron through MAJCOM levels consisted of formulating policy for the protection of command resources; nuclear security, installation law enforcement; information, personnel, industrial security; combat arms and equipping, training and deploying Security Forces worldwide. Chief Master Sergeant T. Brent Chadick is the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 2d Bomb Wing, , . He provides strategic leadership and direction for the wing’s 14,456 personnel supporting and performing global combat operations, to sustain America’s power projection and nuclear deterrence capabilities. Additionally, he maintains an exceptional host installation support structure for 6,300 family members and nearly 25,000 retirees, as well as the men and women of Headquarters, Air Force Global Strike Command; Headquarters 8th Air Force; the ; and 47 other mission partners.

Chief Chadick entered the Air Force in April 1995. His background includes various Security Forces career field duties and a developmental assignment as an Airman Leadership School Flight Instructor. There he trained over 960 Senior Airmen for new leadership opportunities. In June 2005, he was reassigned as a Security Forces Flight Chief. In 2009, he was hand-selected for an assignment to Air Force Global Strike Command as one of the new major command staffers. CMSgt Grange Coffin is the Combined Force Space Component Command Senior Enlisted Leader, U.S. Space Command, U.S. Space Force, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. As the Command Senior Enlisted Leader of U.S. Space Command’s Combined Force Space Component Command, Chief Coffin advises the Commanding General on matters influencing the health, welfare, morale and effective utilization of more than 17,000 joint and combined professionals with a mission to plan, integrate, conduct, and assess global space operations in order to deliver combat relevant space capabilities to Combatant Commanders, Coalition partners, the Joint Force, and the Nation.

Chief Master Sergeant Jason P. Colón is the Command Chief for the 628th Air Base Wing, , South Carolina. Sergeant Major Mark Elrod currently serves as the Special Operations Command Europe Liaison Officer to Naval European Command. In this role, he serves as the Commanders representative and military advisor to NAVEUR on Special Operations Integration, and OAI implementation matters.

CSM Mark Elrod was born in Walnut Creek, California. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July of 1988. Jointed the United States Army in 1993 attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection and Qualification Course, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Following his graduation from SFQC, CSM Elrod served with 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) before joining the Army National Guard. In 2005 CSM Elrod became an AGR in the California National Guard, and currently is serving as an AGR in the Colorado Army National Guard.

CSM Elrod’s assignments include serving in enlisted infantry positions while in United States Marine Corps (deployed , desert shield/storm). Command Sergeant Major Quentin V. Fenderson was born in Demopolis, Alabama (Roll Tide), and entered the military on March 16th, 1994, completing Infantry OSUT training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Upon completion, Command Sgt. Major Fenderson was assigned 2nd Bn., 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He then served with 3rd Bn., 12th Infantry Regiment, which later reflagged to 1st Bn., 6th IR, 1st Armored Division located in Baumholder Germany. While assigned, deployed in support of Operation Joint Endeavor (Bosnia) and Operation Able Sentry (Macedonia).

After his tour in Germany, Fenderson was assigned to 1st Bn., 30th IR, 3rd ID, and deployed to in support of Operation Bright Star. Fenderson was then assigned to the New York City Recruiting Bn., Queens Company and upon completion, he returned to 1st BN, 30th IN where he served as and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I and III. Upon redeployment from OIF III, he was assigned to 1st Bn., 15th IN, 3rd ID, and deployed again to Iraq in support of OIF V. Upon redeployment, he was reassigned to 2nd Bn., 69th Armor, 3rd ID and, deployed to Iraq in support of OIF VII. Upon redeployment, Fenderson was assigned to U.S. Army Forces Command HQ as an assistant Inspector General where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After his time at U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, he was assigned to Operations Group, Joint Multinational Readiness Command located in Hohenfels, Germany, assigned to the 1st Bn, 4th IN (Opposing Forces), and Brigade Ops SGM Observer, Controller, Trainer (Mustangs). After completion of his assignment, Fenderson was assigned as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major for 1st Bn., 30th IR, 3rd ID, and deployed to Africa in support of the U.S. Army Africa Command rotation. Upon completion of his assignment, Fenderson served as the Brigade Command Sergeant Major for 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st ID (Devils), Fort Riley, Kansas, and deployed to in support of U.S. Army Europe Command.

His most recent assignment was the Ops Group Command Sergeant Major at the National Training Center (Outlaw 40) and now serves as the Division Command Sergeant Major for 3rd ID. Fenderson is a graduate of USASMA (Class 63). He has graduated from all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System, including the First Sergeant’s course. His military and civilian education includes Bradley Master Gunner Course and he holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University, Orange Beach, Alabama.

Command Sergeant Major Fenderson’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and many others to include the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Master Gunner Badge. COMMAND MASTER CHIEF KIM A. FERONI Senior Enlisted Leader, Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF GTMO), Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Master Chief Feroni is a native of Bloomington, MN. He enlisted in the Navy, October 1993 under the delayed entry program and completed Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL followed by Operations Specialist “A” School in Dam Neck, VA. His first tour was aboard USS SHASTA (AE 33) home ported in Concord, CA, where he deployed to the Western Pacific. After decommissioning SHASTA, he transferred to USNS KISKA (T-AE 35) where he subsequently was advanced to Second Class Petty Officer. Upon completion of his tour he transferred to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Minneapolis for recruiting duty in 1998.

In June 2002, he headed to PCU PREBLE (DDG 88) in Pascagoula, MS and was commissioned in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed one Western Pacific deployment in support of Global War on Terrorism and promoted to First Class Petty Officer. Master Chief then reported to NRD San Diego for recruiting duty in January 2006, where he was assigned as the Recruiter-in-Charge of NRS Escondido and as the Navy Special Warfare Coordinator. During his tour at NRD San Diego, he was selected to Chief Petty Officer.

In December of 2008, he transferred to SEAL Team SEVEN as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Combat Support personnel. During his tour, he completed two combat tours to Iraq and one to the Middle East region and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer.

In April 2014, he reported to Joint Functional Component Command - Space, Missile Warning Center, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado Springs, CO where he was assigned as the Navy element Senior Enlisted Leader. In 2016, he was selected to the Command Senior Enlisted Leader program and served as Command Master Chief onboard USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79).

In May 2019, he reported to Maritime Expeditionary Security Group TWO onboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Fort Story as the Command Master Chief. As an Immediate Superior in Command SEL, he was responsible for the successful training and certification of 3,100 Active and Reserve Component Maritime Expeditionary Security Force Sailors deploying and mobilizing in support of numerous operations for FOURTH, FIFTH, SIXTH and SEVENTH Fleet’s areas of responsibility.

In May 2021, he was selected to serve in his current position as the Senior Enlisted Leader for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay Cuba.

He attended the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 185/Gray Group) in January 2015 and completed the CMDCM/COB Course in September 2016.

Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Lawless assumed responsibility as the 7th Infantry Division’s senior enlisted leader on May 11, 2021. Lawless has held nearly every enlisted leadership position in infantry, ranging from infantryman to division command sergeant major. As the 7th Infantry Division command sergeant major, Lawless is the chief advisor to the commander on matters affecting the enlisted force. He devotes the majority of his time engaging and developing leaders that provide positive leadership, influence, and team building. He is focused on improving leader abilities to coach and mentor, train, and manage the tools and systems used to build and sustain combat readiness and take care of the Soldiers and Families of the Bayonet Division. Lawless is a native of Widnes, and enlisted in the Army in April 1997. He was assigned as an infantryman to the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, GA, after completing One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He has deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan earning a Combat Jump Star in 2001, and was decorated with two valorous awards. Sergeant Major, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Sergeant Major Leavy enlisted in the Marine Corps on 21 May 1996 and underwent recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He Graduated recruit training on 13 August 1996. He then reported to The School of Infantry for Marine Corps Combat Training in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon Completion of MCT, he remained at Camp Lejeune where he attended the Financial Management School. Upon Completion of MOS School, he was transferred to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, Norfolk VA where he served as a disbursing clerk.

In December of 2000, he was transferred to Headquarters Battalion, MCB Okinawa where he served as the NCOIC for the Pay Section. In April 2001, he was hand selected to serve as the Chief of Staff Personal Assistant and Primary Driver. In January 2002, he transferred to III Marine Expeditionary Force, where he served as the NCOIC for the Operations Section. During his tour with III MEF he participated in numerous deployments and operations, to include a combat tour in the 2002. In January 2003, Sergeant Leavy was hand selected to instruct the Corporal's Course. In December of 2003, he attended Drill Instructor School followed by Close Combat Instructor Course. Sergeant Major Anthony Loftus enlisted in the Marine Corps September 1998 and attended recruit training aboard MCRD, San Diego, CA. Upon graduation, he reported to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA, for Marine Combat Training. Following MCT, he reported to Marine Corps Engineer School, Court House Bay, Camp Lejeune, NC where he received the MOS of 1171 and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of .

In May 1999, Lance Corporal Loftus received orders to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd FSSG, Okinawa, Japan. Upon completion of his tour he was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st FSSG, Camp Pendleton, CA, and was meritoriously promoted to Corporal. In 2001, he deployed with the 13th MEU in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant. In 2003 he deployed in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and was combat meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. In January of 2004, he deployed again in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

In January 2005, Staff Sergeant Loftus attended Drill Instructor School MCRD, San Diego, and was assigned to 1st Recruit Training Battalion. Staff Sergeant Loftus was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and transferred to the Instructor Staff, Drill Instructor School.

In October 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Loftus received orders to 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. In May 2009, Gunnery Sergeant Loftus deployed as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Military Transition Team 0700 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

In December 2009, Gunnery Sergeant Loftus was selected to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to K Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant. In April 2013, First Sergeant Loftus received orders to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion and deployed with Marine Special Operations Company D. In November 2014, he was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15.

In February 2017, Sergeant Major Loftus received orders to 1st Marine Raider Battalion as the Battalion Sergeant Major and deployed with SOTF-N in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE. In October of 2018 he reported to 6th Marine Regiment for duty as the Regimental Sergeant Major and deployed with Task Force Southwest in support of OPERATION FREEDOM'S SENTINEL and the RESOLUTE SUPPORT MISSION Afghanistan. In April of 2021, Sergeant Major Loftus assumed the billet of Marine Forces Special Operations Command Sergeant Major.

Special Operations Command Europe Command Master Chief (SEAL) Peter C. Musselman SOCEUR Senior Enlisted leader

Master Chief Musselman assumed the duties as Command Senior Enlisted Leader of SOCEUR in August 2020.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1989, attended Basic Training at Parris Island, SC and deployed with the First Marine Division in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He conducted a lateral transfer to the United States Navy in 1992 attending Basic Training at RTC Orlando, FL and Aircrew Survival Equipmentman “A” school at NAS Millington, TN. Following Boot Camp and “A” school he was assigned to Navy Personnel Command in Washington D.C. while awaiting assignment to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training.

Master Chief Musselman graduated BUD/S training with class 194 in August 1994 and his first assignment with Naval Special Warfare was with SEAL Team EIGHT at NAB Littlecreek, VA. At SEAL Team EIGHT he completed two deployments to USEUCOM and three shipboard deployments with USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65), USS SHREVEPORT (LPD-12) and USS EISENHOWER (CVN-69) in support of Operations Joint Forge, Desert Fox, Allied Force and Joint Guardian.

In April 2002 Master Chief Musselman reported to SEAL Team TEN as a “Plank Owner”. He completed Platoon Leading Petty Officer, Platoon Chief, Team Operations Chief and Troop Chief Assignments during four deployments with SEAL Team TEN in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Upon selection to Master Chief Petty Officer in 2012 he was assigned to Headquarters Special Operations Command Central, MacDill AFB Tampa, FL, as the Operations Directorate Senior Enlisted Leader and Navy Element Senior Enlisted Leader. He returned to SEAL Team TEN in JAN 2014 and completed two deployments to the USAFRICOM Theater of Operations as the SOTF-East Africa Operations Master Chief and Command Master Chief. COMMAND CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT JAMIE L. NEWMAN Chief Master Sergeant Jamie L. Newman is the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He is the senior enlisted leader on matters influencing the combat readiness, health, welfare, morale, effective utilization and quality of life for more than 26,000 people working at 77 locations and 12 wing/ wing-equivalent organizations, to include the host installations at Wright- Patterson AFB, Ohio and Hanscom AFB in Massachusetts.

Chief Newman grew up in the small town of Milford, Kansas. He began his active duty career on January 11, 1995. Throughout his assignments Chief Newman filled numerous positions in the Air Force and joint force units including entry controller, fire team leader, Phoenix Raven and Air Base build up/defense Instructor, combat operations squad leader/flight chief, operations and squadron superintendents, leading in roles from squadron to wing level. As well, he was assigned to the U.S. Army’s Ranger School as a Ranger Instructor, molding warriors for direct-fire battle by land, sea or air, using planning and squad/platoon combat platforms for deep behind enemy lines operations in the harshest conditions. Command Master Chief Lucas M. Pullen Command Master Chief Pacific Area

U.S. Coast Guard

Command Master Chief Lucas M. Pullen assumed the duties as the Command Master Chief of Pacific Area on 25 May 2021 where he serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for all U.S. Coast Guard missions from the Rocky Mountains to waters off the East Coast of Africa, encompassing four Coast Guard Districts. Most recently, CMC Pullen served in a joint military assignment as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Combined Maritime Forces in Manama, Bahrain.

Originally from Davis, OK, CMC Pullen enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in August of 1998 . CMC Pullen's previous assignments include Command Master Chief Coast Guard Sector Guam, Officer In Charge, USCGC KINGFISHER, Panama City, FL; Officer in Charge, USCGC COHO, Panama City, FL; Officer in Charge, Station Oxford, MD; Executive Petty Officer, Station Yankeetown, FL; Executive Petty Officer, USCGC PELICAN, Abbeville, LA; Coxswain Instructor, Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, VA; USCGC GALVESTON ISLAND, Apra Harbor, Guam; and Station South Padre Island, TX.

CMC Pullen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management from American Military University, and a Master’s Degree in Leadership Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso.

CMC Pullen is proudly married to his best friend of 20 years Marcy Pullen and they have three children, Tucker, Cheyenne, and Levi.

CMDCM (SCW/EXW) Lawrence W. Sharpe Command Master Chief Navy Expeditionary Combat Forces Europe/Africa (NECFEURAF)

Task Force SIX EIGHT (CTF 68)

Master Chief Sharpe reported to CTF68 in August 2019 following a successful assignment as Command Master Chief of Naval Construction Group ONE.

Command Master Chief Sharpe is a native of Yale, Michigan and joined the Navy in September, 1987. Upon completion of basic training and Builder “A” School in Gulfport, Mississippi; he was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SEVENTY FOUR in Gulfport, Mississippi. While there he deployed to Puerto Rico, Okinawa, Japan, and DESERT SHIELD/STORM. In 1991, he transferred to Naval Special Warfare Development Group where he was assigned as SEAL support and made numerous deployments in support of the command. He left the active duty in October of 1994 and joined the reserve force and was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion TWENTY SIX in Clemens, Michigan. In his civilian career he was a self-employed carpenter and excavating contractor, building residential homes in the metropolitan Detroit area.

In February of 2001, he transferred to Second Naval Construction BRIGADE in Little Creek, Virginia as Reserve Operation Chief where he returned to active duty. In November of 2001, he transferred to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (FIGHTING) FORTY where he was assigned as Detail Operations Chief Camp Pendleton, Quality Control Chief, Safety Chief, and Office in Charge of Detail . In September 2004, he transferred to Naval Construction Training Center Port Hueneme, California as the Builder School Director and Alfa Company Commander. In September 2007, he transferred to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE Port Hueneme, California where he served as Assistant Office in Charge Detail San Clemente and Battalion Operations Chief. In January of 2009, he transferred to Naval Construction Battalion FOUR where he served as Battalion Operations Chief. His Command Master Chief tours were Naval Construction Training Center Port Hueneme 2011, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE 2013, and Naval Construction Group ONE 2015.

Master Chief Sharpe has earned his Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership, is a qualified Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist, Expeditionary Combat Warfare Specialist and his personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Joint Service Commendation medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various unit and campaign awards. He and his wife Susan have four children, SSGT Samantha Sharpe Johnson, Alexandria, Jessica, Gregory, two granddaughters Keaghan, Charlotte and grandsons Malcom and Calum.
