INTRODUCTION

The basis of irreligious criticism is this: man makes ; religion does not make man. Religion is indeed man's - and self- so long as he has not found himself or has lost himself again. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point of honor, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, its general basis of consolation and justification.
