Acontecimentos catastróficos foram registados na ilha desde o início da colonização, sendo a partir do século XIX que se encontram relatos com maior pormenor. Estes acontecimentos têm manifestações históricas na área em estudo, mantendo-se até aos dias de hoje, estando reportados danos materiais avultados e perdas e impactos humanos. Neste estudo será realizado um levantamento dos processos de perigo através da análise e construção de uma base de dados com o histórico de ocorrências entre 2008 e 2015 que possam ter causado danos materiais e humanos, proceder-se-á à classificação e avaliação do risco na área de estudo, pela aplicação da metodologia de matrizes de risco da Autoridade Nacional de Proteção Civil (ANPC) e Oregon Emergency Management (OEM).
