11 SUPERINTENDENTS OF RURAL EDUCATION

Under the provisions of Section 1444 of the General Statutes, the board of education of any town which during the year ended June 30, 1941, employing not more than 25 teachers may petition the state board of education, or such town may by vote request said state board, to provide supervisory service and said state board is authorized to appoint the necessary supervisory agents 0 0 0 so long as the number of teachers em­ ployed by such town shall not exceed 35. During the present year 1951-52, 79 towns are receiving this service.

17 LOCAL SUPERVISORS OF ADULT EDUCATION

Under the provisions of Section 1386 of the General Statutes, the board of education of any town may appoint a supervisor of adult education, and shall fix and pay his compensation. One-half of the local director's salary may be paid by the state board of education to the local board of education provided not more than $1,500 shall be paid for such purpose dunng any one year.
