Bicentenarios de las Independencias Elisa Cárdenas Ayala Universidad de Guadalajara ◆ Desde hace ya varios años arrancó la locomotora de los «bicentenarios». Así, en plural, porque tan múltiples son los bicentenarios como las inde- pendencias. No queda claro si la locomotora es sólo una ni en qué mo- mentos y formas la vía habrá de bifurcarse (¿tri, poli, furcarse?), pero sí, en cambio, que carros muy variados se han ido enganchando. Las motivaciones son muchas para quienes se les han acercado, como individuos o instituciones, y sobre no pocas de ellas pululan espectros como el de los fastos de aquel Centenario porfiriano o el de esos ya cinco centenarios (sólo dos de ellos «conmemorados») de un mucho menos glo- rioso evento: la invasión y conquista de América. Llama en todo esto poderosamente la atención una suerte de divor- cio entre lo que se considera un hecho «histórico» –gloriosa categoría que permite confinar hechos, temas, problemas, sujetos y objetos en el pasado; que hace posible, como escribiera Michel de Certeau1 en sus re- flexiones sobre la «operación historiográfica», enterrar a los muertos– y nuestra vida presente, o aún, eventualmente, nuestro futuro. Para la historia como disciplina y como campo profesional, es una desgracia que el tema de los bicentenarios, que no es otro sino el de las independencias, se confine al debate sobre lo ocurrido en el pasado. Por esa razón, abre en esta ocasión En Takwá sus páginas al producto de la discusión que sobre el tema se diera el verano pasado en el marco del Congreso de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología (ALAS), gracias a la iniciativa y empuje de Alberto Navas. -

Biliana Kassabova History of Political Thought Workshop December 4, 2017 Blanqui’s note Nov. 23, 1848 Blanqui between Myth and Archives: Revolution, Dictatorship, and Education This piece, very much a work in progress, aims to make sense of the revolutionary ideas and actions of Louis-Auguste Blanqui. It complicates our ideas of political thought regarding revolution in the nineteenth century, by arguing that the binary of centralized versus popular revolution needs to be revised. It is part of a larger project on concepts of revolutionary leadership in France from the French Revolution of 1789 until the Paris Commune of 1871. Within this historical trajectory, Blanqui is an interpreter of 18th century ideas into 19th century contexts, a political thinker and actor who plays a key role in the various reformulations of the revolutionary tradition. 1848 does not enjoy a stellar reputation among historians of France. The revolution of February that year saw the overthrow of the last king of France, followed by the establishment of a new French republic. This republic, however, lasted for only three years, brought little and short-lived social change, remained rather conservative, though was also laden with bitter parliamentary strife, and ended through a coup d’état that inaugurated a new authoritarian régime, a Second Empire with Napoleon III at its head. To add insult to injury, even the attempts at establishing a viable parliamentary republican system were famously seen by political observers and participants from 2 almost all parts of the political spectrum as derivative, incompetent, and worse yet – laughable. “There have been more mischievous revolutionaries than those of 1848, but I doubt if there have been any stupider,”1 quipped Alexis de Tocqueville in his posthumously published Recollections. -

No other secret society in recent history - with the exception of Freemasonry - has generated as much legend, hysteria, and disinformation. I first became aware of the the Illuminati about 14 years ago. Shortly thereafter I read a book, written by Robert Anton Wilson, called Cosmic Trigger: Final Secret of the Illuminati. Wilson published it in 1977 but his opening remarks on the subject still ring true today: Briefly, the background of the Bavarian Illuminati puzzle is this. On May 1, 1776, in Bavaria, Dr. Adam Weishaupt, a professor of Canon Law at Ingolstadt University and a former Jesuit, formed a secret society called the Order of the Illuminati within the existing Masonic lodges of Germany. Since Masonry is itself a secret society, the Illuminati was a secret society within a secret society, a mystery inside a mystery, so to say. In 1785 the Illuminati were suppressed by the Bavarian government for allegedly plotting to overthrow all the kings in Europe and the Pope to boot. This much is generally agreed upon by all historians. 1 Everything else is a matter of heated, and sometimes fetid, controversy. It has been claimed that Dr. Weishaupt was an atheist, a Cabalistic magician, a rationalist, a mystic; a democrat, a socialist, an anarchist, a fascist; a Machiavellian amoralist, an alchemist, a totalitarian and an "enthusiastic philanthropist." (The last was the verdict of Thomas Jefferson, by the way.) The Illuminati have also been credited with managing the French and American revolutions behind the scenes, taking over the world, being the brains behind Communism, continuing underground up to the 1970s, secretly worshipping the Devil, and mopery with intent to gawk. -

Rothbard* Marx as Millennia1 Communist he key to the intricate and massive system of thought created by Karl Marx is at bottom a simple one: Karl Marx was a Tcommunist. A seemingly trite and banal statement set along- side Marxism's myriad of jargon-ridden concepts in philosophy, eco- nomics, and culture, yet Marx's devotion to communism was his crucial focus, far more central than the class struggle, the dialectic, the theory of surplus value, and all the rest. Communism was the great goal, the vision, the desideratum, the ultimate end that would make the sufferings of mankind throughout history worthwhile. History is the history of suffering, of class struggle, of the exploitation of man by man. In the same way as the return of the Messiah, in Christian theology, will put an end to history and establish a new heaven and a new earth, so the establishment of communism would put an end to human history. And just as for post-millennia1 Chris- tians, man, led by God's prophets and saints, will establish a Kingdom of God on Earth (for pre-millennials, Jesus will have many human assistants in setting up such a kingdom), so, for Marx and other schools of communists, mankind, led by a vanguard of secular saints, will establish a secularized Kingdom of Heaven on earth. In messianic religious movements, the millennium is invariably established by a mighty, violent upheaval, an Armageddon, a great apocalyptic war between good and evil. After this titanic conflict, a millennium, a new age, of peace and harmony, of the reign of justice, will be installed upon the earth. -

H-Nationalism The Left and Nationalism Monthly Series: "Left and Right around (and within) Nationalism" by Liah Greenfeld Discussion published by Emmanuel Dalle Mulle on Monday, November 20, 2017 H-Nationalism is proud to publish here the second post of its “The Left and Nationalism Monthly Series”, which looks at the relationship between nationalism and left-wing movements and thinking in a multi-disciplinary perspective. Today’s contribution, by Professor Liah Greenfeld (Boston University), inquires into the pervasive relationship between nationalism and both the right and the left. As Daniele Conversi already mentioned in the first blog post of this series, the familiar terms of “left” and “right” acquired their political meaning in 1789, at the start of the French Revolution. Let us further unpack this momentous connection. This pivotal event, which, in many ways, inaugurated the Age of Nationalism, was the first collective expression of national consciousness in France, while France was the first society into which this new spirit was imported from Britain, where it was born. The Revolution was inspired by nationalism and represented an attack on the pre-national form of the social order – ancien régime – and the social consciousness on which it was based. This social consciousness was religious, monarchical, and hierarchical, presupposing the obedience of the secular world to divine authority, differences of fundamental nature between social strata, and corresponding differences in rights between them. In distinction, national consciousness is secular, democratic, and egalitarian, presupposing popular sovereignty and an egalitarian community of identity, inclusive of the entire population of the country. Because England, where this consciousness emerged, called such community “nation,” “nationalism” is the name for the related complex of phenomena. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT During the greater part of the nineteenth century the French political, social and cultural landscapes continued to reverberate from the echoes of the French Revolution. On one level, the Revolution framed the parameters of political debate. However, on another level the Revolution represented the first time in French history when political activism appeared to open up boundless opportunities for effecting change. In large measure, this was due to the prominence of popular protest in the Revolution and its transformation after 1789. Popular protest was nothing new to France. In fact, it was ingrained in the popular mentalité as a response to grievances. That said, the scope of popular protest during the ancien régime tended to be quite limited and rarely transcended the immediate source of the dispute.
