 Give It 2 Me – – Notes (1)

ƒ Activity types: Listening for specific words, gap fill, vocabulary (opposites, synonyms, American English, non standard spoken English), acronyms (texting).

ƒ Level: Pre-intermediate

ƒ Grammar: Imperative; Second conditional

ƒ Note: This was the second single from Madonna’s eleventh studio album Hard Candy, released in 2008. It features the American singer Pharrell, who co-wrote and co-produced the song.

• Write the following words on the board and ask students to find their opposites alone or in pairs (do not underline the words – these are part of the activity, but not in the song). stop - win - now - beginning - new – up - here – after - left

Note: left is intended as a noun, although the past participle is also used in the chorus.

Key (but at this stage any correct opposite is acceptable):

go - lose - then - ending – old - down – there - before – right

Note: right is intended as a noun, although it is used to mean immediately (right now) in line 4. • Ask students to listen for the words from activity A, numbering them in the order they hear them (if they appear more than once, refer to the first time). Tell them that four words are not in the song. Play the song.

Key: 1. now - 2. there - 3. stop - 4. go - 5. down - 6. then - 7. beginning - 8. ending 9. left (note that this is also n. 5, but as the Past Participle of the verb “to leave”) 10. right (note that this is also in line 4, see note above) - 11. here - 12. win 13. before - 14. new

• Feedback, then give each student a copy of the worksheet and ask them to fill in the gaps with the missing words, based on their answers to the previous activity, context and their prior knowledge of the song.

• Play the song again. Students check their answers in pairs or in groups.

• Correct in open class, play the song and sing together!

• Vocabulary and Grammar focus:

1) Ask students to find in the song two pairs of words with similar meaning: Key: no one – nobody; boundaries – limits

2) Make sure students understand the American English gonna (going to) and the non standard spoken English form ain’t (isn’t), both used in the song.

3) Ask students to list the positive and negative imperatives in the song. • Put me in it, arrest me, give it to me, get stupid, etc. • Don’t stop me, don’t stop it Note: Don’t need to catch my breath means I don’t need, therefore it cannot be considered as an imperative.

4) If students have studied the Second Conditional, ask them to find an example of this in the song. Key: They’d do it too if they were you. 5) Acronyms: The title of the song includes an acronym: 2 is used in place of to. Acronyms are very popular among young people when they send SMS messages, speak in chat rooms or write e-mails. This new “global” language is called “Texting”. Test your student about this!

Write the following SMS messages that two young people have sent to each other on the board.

Paul: MUSM! CAN I BY U A DRNK 2NITE? Susan: MU2. GR8! Paul: CU@9pm Susan: OK. B4N

Later …

Susan: W4U! URL8! Y? WRU? RUCMNG? Paul: 4GVM. W84M PLS! CMG ASAP Susan: NP. CU L8R. ILU. Paul: ILU2. X

Divide students into different groups. They have to work out the meaning of the messages. Then, a group can write down the messages in full English, using direct speech, another group can re-write them as reported speech and another can write a summary.

Key:

Paul: I miss you so much! Can I buy you a drink tonight? Susan: I miss you too. Great! Paul: See you at 9 p.m. Susan: Ok. Bye for now.

Later …

Susan: I’m waiting for you! You are late! Why? Where are you? Are you coming? Paul: Forgive me. Wait for me please! I’m coming as soon as possible. Susan: No problem. See you later. I love you. Paul: I love you too. Kiss.
