"Secrets, Sex, Scandal and Salacious Gossip from the Royal Court"

Now that's not what you'd call a boring or usual, run-of-the-mill topic for discussion and one that certainly didn't disappoint on the night. 49 interested parties, including a lady from France, tuned in last Friday evening to the Zoom presentation delivered by Sarah Slater, an experienced Guide Lecturer, Speaker and Hampton Court Palace tour guide of 12 years standing. Sarah was wearing a very fetching off-the-shoulder gown, of her own making, under which 3 petticoats were worn as well as corsets, which Sarah assured us were very comfortable. Historically, knickers were not introduced until the end of the 18th century. Hampton Court Palace is situated on the Thames approximately half way between London and Windsor and was built by Cardinal Wolsey in 1515 who later gave it to Henry VIII. It became one of Henry's favourite and has been lived in by many monarchs, the last one being George III who had mental health issues. Sarah spoke of James I of England (VI of Scotland), who was homosexual, handsome Charles II who drank heavily, whored, gambled and had numerous lovers plus 14 illegitimate children and actress Nell Gwyn as one of his lovers. We listened as Sarah told of secret bedchambers leading from a King's bed, another King and his Queen who had 15 children between them and showed us via. PowerPoint, a book called "Harris's List", "Men of pleasure's Kalendar" which was an annual directory of Georgian prostitutes. The entries described the physical appearance and sexual specialities of some 120-190 prostitutes working in and around Covent Garden at that time. In 1811 a "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" was printed listing many words/phrases and their meanings, which was also a bit of 5 Tom Hannaford

News and Easter Opening

As you will know we had been expecting major works with a new counter, cigarette storage and card display to be happening this month. Unfortunately, the company that were to do the work have been difficult to tie down and we believe they either have major problems or have lost interest in the job. In view of this we are now looking at other options so the work will not be taking place in the near future. If anybody knows anyone who may be interested in quoting please let us know.

At Christmas we offered customers the opportunity to order vegetables, dairy produce and bakery items. This proved a great success so we are repeating this for Easter which falls at the beginning of April. Please keep an eye out for information and order forms, in the shop, later this month.

Easter Opening Hours

Good Friday – 10:00 am to 12:00 midday

Saturday – 08:00 am to 3:00 pm – no lunchtime closure

Easter Sunday – 10:00 am to 12:00 midday

Bank Holiday Monday – closed; newspapers available from grey box 10:00 am to 12:00 midday (as at Christmas) settle up on Tuesday

The Easter opening hours will be published again next month.

This festival has long passed and so the churchwardens intend to clear the churchyard as soon as the weather allows. We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the Church of England’s regulations regarding the placing of flowers and other tributes on graves. In summary: * Wreaths and cut flowers may be placed on graves but must be removed once they have withered or become unsightly. If placed in containers, these should either be integral to the gravestone or sunk level with the ground. One container per grave is allowed. * Plastic flowers are not permitted (unless as part of a temporary wreath such as for Christmas or Remembrance), and any other form of artificial flowers must be removed within two months or earlier if they become unsightly. * No ornaments or additions may be placed on graves save for flowers or wreaths as described above. * The only exception is the case of a child’s grave (under 18 years) where ONE suitable toy or tribute may be left for no longer than 6 months. Responsibility for removal of items as required lies with the person who placed them in the first place, but the incumbent may authorise the churchwardens to clear anything which does not comply with the regulations. Week St Mary Church has taken a very flexible approach to the application of these regulations, but we now have an increasing number of tributes which do not comply, and which are left for too long, often becoming unsightly or detached from graves and scattering as litter. We would be grateful if users of the churchyard would take it upon themselves to rectify the situation so that we do not have to clear items and cause upset in the process. We spend a great deal of time and money maintaining the churchyard as a tidy and tranquil space for the use of everyone and hope that you understand the reasons for this reminder. The full regulations can be found here: https://trurodiocese.org.uk/wp- content/uploads/2019/07/1.-Diocesan-Regulations-full-May19.pdf - a printed copy is available on the church porch notice board. We will also be carrying out the annual Health and Safety check on the stability of headstones in the spring and will contact families who need to have their headstones repaired or stabilised. 21 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER SERVICE

Sadly, due to the current Covid restrictions the Anglican and Methodist joint service which happens in our village annually is unable to take place in a church building. We are, however, undaunted and will go online sharing the service with the Churches Together Group in Bude on Zoom. We will then be able to join with communities throughout the world to celebrate this special day. The service has been prepared by the Christians of Vanuatu and is entitled 'Together In Prayer … Build On A Strong Foundation' Vanuatu is on the other side of the world nearly 2000 miles east of Northern Australia and consists of 80 beautiful tropical islands. It is a paradise of coral beaches and miles of sands but the islands are subject to earthquakes and active volcanoes. Rising sea levels threaten to erode the land and polluting oil from boats and plastic waste washed up on their shores badly affects the environment.

Service Date: Friday 5th March 10:30 am. Venue: Zoom How To Join In: Please contact Sue Dickenson at [email protected] or 01288-341016 for the Zoom link and a copy of the service order which we can deliver to you for you to be able to follow at home. Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing some of you on the screen.

22 LENT COURSE

This year Week St Mary HUBS group and several other churches in the Benefice, are running the Live Lent course which is based on the Archbishop’s Lent Book for 2021 written by Hannah Steele and called Living His Story.

Anyone interested in taking apart should contact Lesley Booker on 01288-341221 or Sue Dickenson on 01288-341016 for details and the Zoom link as this year we will be entirely online.

During the course we will have the opportunity to contribute to the plans for the Deanery to move forward post-Covid. The course starts on Thursday 25th Feb at 9:30am

23 Christian Ministry – A Foundation Course

During 2020 I had been studying with a group of people, many of whom will be going on to pursue a vocational career in Christian Ministry as Readers, Worship Leaders or Priests. Our course is being run by the Diocese of and aims to equip students with the necessary skills and background knowledge to study Theology, the Bible and Human interactions enroute to Christian Ministry. I originally started the course with a different group in 2019 but unfortunately had to withdraw due to ill health, so it has been an interesting experience to join with a new set of people whilst already having the advantage of knowing what was coming for the first few sessions! This has allowed me to concentrate more on developing relationships and being more relaxed the second time around. There is a very wide range of Christian traditions amongst group members and this is both interesting and at times, challenging. I find it quite hard to take in these differences without being unduly influenced by the strength of the characters behind them, but it is a fantastic way to gain experience whilst learning more about history, theology, and philosophy. We are encouraged to read extensively as part of our studies and although I find this very useful and informative, reading is one skill that needs a great deal of enhancement in my case. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a busy life (or did before COVID) and have found it quite difficult to sit still with a book. My reasons for taking this course? Well, to begin with I was asked to, and I trusted the judgement of the person who asked me and secondly, although I have no aspirations to go any further as a Reader or Priest, I regularly lead worship, prepare prayers, and take part in Bible study sessions in our parish and benefice. I feel that this course will develop my confidence and help me to lead youngsters and members of our congregations to see God and Jesus and to encourage others to share their faith in their everyday lives. I hope that

24 being exposed to new ideas, learning more about the bible and trying to look at life from other people’s perspectives will make me more useful to our church, benefice and deanery as we move forward into the new world that we must find on the other side of the pandemic. I spent a short time in sunny South Africa in 2008 visiting our twin Diocese of Umzimvubu and I do so admire the ability of everyday people there to speak out in faith and to put their trust in God with joy and thanksgiving – I hope that one day I will feel confident enough to do that here in chilly Cornwall!
