Book Description Born in 1894, Facey lived the rough frontier life of a sheep farmer, survived the gore of Gallipoli, raised a family through the Depression and spent sixty years with his beloved wife, Evelyn. Despite enduring hardships we can barely imagine today, Facey always saw his life as a 'fortunate' one. A true classic of Australian literature, his simply written autobiography is an inspiration. It is the story of a life lived to the full – the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man. The autobiography begins at his birth. He was born in Maidstone, Victoria, Australia. His father died on the Goldfields of Western Australia in 1896 of typhoid fever and Albert's mother left her children to the care of their grandmother shortly afterwards. In 1899 he moved from Victoria to Western Australia with his grandmother and three of his six older siblings. Most of his childhood was spent in the Wickepin area. He started working on farms at the age of eight and had little education and therefore could not read or write. As a child he taught himself to read and write. By the age of 14 he was an experienced DOWNLOAD PDF HERE bushman, and at 18 a professional boxer. He was badly injured at Gallipoli in August 1915 during the First World War, in which two of his brothers were killed. While recuperating he met his future wife Evelyn Gibson and they were married in Bunbury in August 1916.

DRYANDRA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER NO. 32 Dryandra lindleyana subs p. sylvestris ISSN: 0728-1 51X FEBRUARY, 1997 SOCIETY FOR GROWING AUSTRALIAN PLANTS DRYANDRA STUDY GROUP LEADER NEWSLETTER EDITOR Mrs. Margaret Pieroni Mr Tony Cavanagh 16 CaIpin Crescent 16 Woodlands Drive ATTADALE OCEAN GROVE W.A. 6156 VIC 3226 Welcome to our first Newsletter for 1997. 1 hope that your garden is faring a little better than mine. Our January was the hottest and driest on record and February is shaping up the same way. I know 'that Perth has also had many very hot days and I wonder how everyone's dryandras are surviving. I've lost a lot of small seedlings (maybe Autumn is the best time to grow dryandras, even in southern Victoria) although everything in the garden apart from one D.nervosu has so far survived. I'd be interested in reports on how your dryandras have handled this summer, in particular information on species which appear to be especially reliable. I have not paginated this newsletter in the usual way because of the various sections you might wish to remove. Margaret has prepared an excellent summary of the main characteristics of that (now) very confasing group of dryandras in subgenus Niveae. Together with the leaf prints, this should help make recognition of many of these species a little easier. New member David Lightfoot has given us another index to compliment the excellent species index prepared by David Randall. Thanks, David, I'm sure that everyone will find it helpful. Just looking through it, I was surprised at just how many topics we'd covered in the 31 issues of the Newsletter up to now.

  • New Species, New Combinations and Other Name Changes in Hakea (Proteaceae)
    J. Adelaide Bot. Gard. 13: 95-110 (1990) NEW SPECIES, NEW COMBINATIONS AND OTHER NAME CHANGES IN HAKEA (PROTEACEAE) R.M. Barker C/- State Herbarium, Botanic Gardens, North Terrace, Adelaide, 5000. Abstract Six new taxa of Hakea are described from the south-west region of Western Australia; these are H. psilorrhyncha and H obliqua ssp. parviflora, H pendens, H newbeyana, H bicornata and H horrida. The new combinations made here are H teretifolia ssp. hirsuta (Endl.) R.M.Barker, H pandanicanta ssp. crassifolia (Meissn.) R.M.Barker, H spathulata (Benth.) R.M.Barker, and H longillora (Benth.) R.M.Barker. H drupacea (Gaertn.f.) Roemer & Schultes and H. denticulata R. Br. are earlier names which must replace H suaveolens R. Br. and H rubnflora Lamont respectively, while H. lasiocarpha R. Br. replaces H dolichostyla Diels. H brownii Meissn. is a distinct species separate from H baxteri, while H roeiBenth. is a synonym of H. pandanicarpa ssp. crassifolia. Introduction The following new species, new combinations and name changes in Hakea arose from a joint revision of the genus undertaken by Dr W.R. Barker, Dr L. Haegi and the author of this paper. While a primary aim of the project was to prepare a treatment of Hakea for the Flora of Australia project, a full revision is planned. The restrictions on length of descriptions within the Flora of Australia has led to the new species being described here together with a discussion of their relationships. New combinations have been made and justified here and the reasons for changes in the names of some familiar species are also discussed.

INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN NO. 108 Herbaceous plant assemblages on bentonite lake beds (Vegetation Types 1,2,3&7) and margins (Vegetation Types 4,5&6) of the Watheroo- Marchagee region Interim Recovery Plan 2002-2007 Sheila Hamilton-Brown Photograph: Sheila Hamilton-Brown July 2002 Department of Conservation and Land Management Western Australian Threatened Species and Communities Unit PO Box 51, Wanneroo, WA 6946 FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Conservation and Land Management (the Department) Policy Statements Nos. 44 and 50. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. The Department is committed to ensuring that Critically Endangered, and where appropriate and feasible, other threatened ecological communities are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by the Minister. This Interim Recovery Plan will operate from July 2002 to June 2007 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the ecological community is still ranked Critically Endangered, this IRP will be reviewed after five years and the need for a full Recovery Plan assessed. This IRP was approved by the Director of Nature Conservation on 24 September 2002. The provision of funds identified in this Interim Recovery Plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting the Department, as well as the need to address other priorities.
