12 13 Conversely, the “Ripped from the Runway” discussion engaged the girls in a conversation with a professional make-up artist, focusing on self-esteem, self-acceptance and personal Service Project branding. Girls were shown techniques for clean, healthy skin as well as a make-up demonstration to help bring out their outer beauty.

We closed the service project by giving the girls a personalized make-up bag or and a framed message of empowerment and encouraged them to rip down the red-carpet runway while being cheered on by members of the Dogwood City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and candidates.

The 2019 candidates of the Dogwood City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated were challenged to impact the lives of 20+ young girls in SW Atlanta who participate in after-school enrichment programs at the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA, as part of The Links, Inc. commitment to youth. With a deep understanding of today’s cultural and social stimuli faced by many young girls, we decided to design a service project to educate and celebrate young African-American girls on relevant topics inspired by today’s headlines.

We created the “Ripped from the Headlines and Ripped from the Runway” service project as a two-part interactive demonstration and discussion. The girls were broken into two groups of 10-12+ based on age to ensure all conversations were age appropriate. Our overall program goal was to encourage the young girls to embrace their strength, beauty and well-being. The “Ripped from the Headlines” discussion engaged the girls in a dynamic conversation and demonstration from a safety expert, focusing on personal safety and sexual assault prevention, among other things. The girls were taught the importance of confidence, fighting back and situational awareness.
