Magnum Photos, Inc Magnum Photos, Inc.: A Preliminary Inventory of Its Collection in the Photography Collection at the Harry Ransom Center Descriptive Summary Creator: Magnum Photos, Inc. Title: Magnum Photos, Inc., Photography Collection Dates: 1929-2004 Extent: 1,320 boxes and 39 portfolios (approx. 200,000 photographic prints) Abstract: Magnum Photos' New York bureau photograph morgue consisting largely of black-and-white gelatin silver prints dating from 1929 to 2004. The photographs show the world and its people, events, issues, geography, and personalities as captured through the lenses of Magnum members. Language: English Access: Open for research. Researchers may also wish to consult an FAQ about the collection. Administrative Information Acquisition: Gift, 2013 (previously on deposit, 2010) Processed by: Mary Alice Harper, 2010 Repository: The University of Texas at Austin, Harry Ransom Center Magnum Photos, Inc. Scope and Contents The collection consists of photographs from Magnum Photos' New York bureau, dating from 1929 to 2004. Black-and-white gelatin silver prints make up the bulk of the collection, but also included are a few color prints, ink jet prints, and copy transparencies. The photographs show the world and its people, events, issues, geography, and personalities as captured through the lenses of Magnum members. The images in this collection were made to distribute to publishers, the media, advertisers, and museums and galleries from around the globe. Nearly half the photographs were sent out for assignments and returned, and thus show evidence of much handling. The backs of many of the photographs are marked and stamped, evidence of their usage and means for refiling. Since its foundation in 1947, Magnum has used a number of filing systems (the current system arranges photographs by story number). The original physical order of the collection is preserved, but in order to facilitate search and retrieval, this preliminary inventory groups similar photographs in the following five series: Series I, Photographers; Series II, Personalities; Series III, Subjects; Series IV, Geographical; and Series V, Magnum. The bulk of the materials are listed at box-level only. All subjects and titles in this preliminary inventory are those assigned by Magnum. The first series, Photographers, is comprised of boxes containing the works of single photographers only, and it is in alphabetical order by photographer. In general the boxes follow each photographer's career chronologically, occasionally ending with a portfolio of exhibition prints. Box descriptions that are seven digits long (e.g., 1944001) are for specific stories; the first four digits represent the year of the story and the last three digits represent the story number within a given year. Series II, Personalities, consists of images of notable figures from around the world. Included are portraits and snapshots of world leaders, politicians, artists, authors, activists, sports figures, actors and actresses, designers, architects, musicians, and other celebrated people. Each personality received his or her own folder, so the majority of boxes show a range of names rather than a single name. Individual names are displayed either as they appear in the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF) or have been formed in accordance with the Anglo American Cataloging Rules 2nd revision (AACR2r). Dates appearing in conjunction with names are the life and/or death dates of the subject. The third series, Subjects, consists of generic, domestic topical subjects, and excludes personalities and foreign countries. All subjects are listed alphabetically. Series IV, Geography, is divided first by continent or world region, and then subdivided by country and listed alphabetically. The final series, Magnum, is comprised of portraits and snapshots of Magnum photographers, staff, contributors and meetings. Additionally there are groups of images collected by Magnum members for specific projects. Individual names are displayed either as they appear in the LCNAF or have been formed in accordance with the AACR2r. Dates appearing in conjunction with names are the life and/or death dates of 2 Magnum Photos, Inc. the subject. This preliminary inventory was created to provide immediate access to the collection. In the interest of preserving the original state of the archive, folders not containing any photographs were left in place and listed but are marked as empty in this inventory. Boxes and/or folders not described in Magnum's original inventory are noted as such. In the future, more detailed, folder-level information will be added. All personalities will be listed individually, and all subjects and geographical locations will contain subcategories. • See It Big! Action Features More Than 30 Action Movie Favorites on the Big
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG! ACTION’ FEATURES MORE THAN 30 ACTION MOVIE FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN April 19–July 7, 2019 Astoria, New York, April 16, 2019—Museum of the Moving Image presents See It Big! Action, a major screening series featuring more than 30 action films, from April 19 through July 7, 2019. Programmed by Curator of Film Eric Hynes and Reverse Shot editors Jeff Reichert and Michael Koresky, the series opens with cinematic swashbucklers and continues with movies from around the world featuring white- knuckle chase sequences and thrilling stuntwork. It highlights work from some of the form's greatest practitioners, including John Woo, Michael Mann, Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Kathryn Bigelow, Jackie Chan, and much more. As the curators note, “In a sense, all movies are ’action’ movies; cinema is movement and light, after all. Since nearly the very beginning, spectacle and stunt work have been essential parts of the form. There is nothing quite like watching physical feats, pulse-pounding drama, and epic confrontations on a large screen alongside other astonished moviegoers. See It Big! Action offers up some of our favorites of the genre.” In all, 32 films will be shown, many of them in 35mm prints. Among the highlights are two classic Technicolor swashbucklers, Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and Jacques Tourneur’s Anne of the Indies (April 20); Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (April 21); back-to-back screenings of Mad Max: Fury Road and Aliens on Mother’s Day (May 12); all six Mission: Impossible films

  • 'Saudi Brezhnevs' | the Washington Institute
MENU Policy Analysis / Articles & Op-Eds 'Saudi Brezhnevs' Aug 3, 2005 Articles & Testimony mportant detail was missed in much of the reporting of the death of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia on Monday. I Carried by the Saudi Press Agency, it was information in the new official biographies of the new King Abdullah and his designated successor, Crown Prince Sultan. Why does this matter? It is because both men are lying about their ages -- and age (of senior princes) is the key to understanding Saudi Arabia over the next few years. When I wrote a book -- After King Fahd: Succession in Saudi Arabia -- in 1994 (Washington Institute for Near East Policy), I spent months checking the years of birth of the sons of King Abdul Aziz, the founder of Saudi Arabia, often known as Ibn Saud. Since his death in 1953, the kingdom has been ruled by his sons, in descending order of age. First Saud (1953-64), then Faisal (1964-75), then Khalid (1975-1982) and, most recently, Fahd (1982-2005). Precise birthdates are usually unknown, just years of birth. In itself that has potential for confusion because Ibn Saud, by virtue of having four wives at any one time, sometimes fathered as many as three sons in the course of a year. (Ibn Saud had 22 wives during his lifetime; births of daughters are even more imprecisely recorded but, for the purposes of this discussion, do not count.) I am confident that I pinned down the real birth years of all 44 sons. (One British Arabist, close to the Saudi royal family, would only confirm correct years, crossing out wrong ones, and leaving me to do the extra research to correct my mistakes.) Fahd was born in 1921, Abdullah in 1923 and Sultan in 1924.

The following study will take a look at the history of the region that America has become entangled in, a region that used to be, and to some degree still is, almost entirely controlled by Britain. Is this current "War On Terror" truly a war to bring freedom to the region and to promote traditional American ideals, or is it a power-play to solidify global American hegemony?
