Darris, Conservation Agronomist, Corvallis Plant Materials Center Introduction Sitka alder [Alnus viridis (Vill.) Lam. & DC. subsp. sinuata (Regel) A.& D. Löve] is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that grows to height of 20 ft, occasionally taller. Although a non-crop species, it has several characteristics useful for reclamation, forestry, and erosion control. The species is known for abundant leaf litter production, the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen in association with Frankia bacteria, and a strong fibrous root system. Where locally abundant, it naturally colonizes landslide chutes, areas of stream scour and deposition, soil slumps, and other drastic disturbances resulting in exposed minerals soils. These characteristics make Sitka alder particularly useful for streambank stabilization and soil building on impoverished sites. In addition, its low height and early slowdown in growth rate makes it potentially more desirable than red alder (Alnus rubra) to interplant with conifers such as Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzieii) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) where soil fertility is moderate to low. However, high densities can hinder forest regeneration efforts. The species may also be useful as a fast growing shrub row in field windbreaks. Sitka alder is most abundant at mid to subalpine elevations. Low elevation seed sources (below 100 m) are uncommon but probably provide the best material for reclamation and erosion control projects on valley floors and terraces. Distribution and Identification Sitka alder (Alnus viridis subsp. sinuata) is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that grows to a height of 1-6 m (3-19 ft) in the mountains and 6-12 m (19-37ft) at low elevations. -

DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRIES Pride of Madeira Echium candicans Victorian Alert Weed Fact Sheet Plant biology Type of weed: Garden escape. Lifeform: Semi-woody biennial herb. Description: Stems: Pride of Madeira is a much-branched plant that grows to more than three metres high (PIER 2004; Webb et al 2004). The stem, fl owers and leaves of the plant are covered with fi ne, bristly, whitish coloured hairs (Spencer 2005). The species initially grows as a rosette at the base with leaves alternately arranged on the stem (Richardson et al 2006). Mature plants have longer stems with whitish papery bark and stout branches, with leaves growing more towards the stem’s apex (Bennett 2003). Botanical name: Echium candicans. Leaves have veins which are very prominent on Synonyms: Echium fastuosum. the lower surface and the leaves are densely covered with bristly hairs that appear grey or Common name: Pride of Madeira. silvery (Spencer 2005; Webb et al 2004). Alternatives: Tower of jewels, star of Madeira, bugloss. Family: Boraginaceae. Flowers: E. candicans is a monocarpic shrub, Relevant relatives: There are over 40 species in the Echium meaning it only fl owers once before dying genus and 30 are listed as being weedy by the Global Compendium (Bennett 2003). Each branch can reach up to of Weeds (Randall 2001). Closely related plants to pride of Madeira 3.5 metres tall with the columnar fl ower spike include Echium wildpretii (tower of jewels) and Echium pininana reach lengths of 200-400 mm (Webb et al 2004). -

State and federal actions will affect and be affected by implementation ofthe Village ofSag Harbor Local WaterfTont Revitalization Program (L WRP). Under State law and the U.S. Coastal Zone Management Act, certain State and federal actions \\~thin or affecting the local waterfront area must be "consistent" or "consistent to the maximum extent practicable" \"lith the enforceable policics and purposes ofthe LWRP. This consistency requirement makes the LWRP a unique. intergovernmental mechanism for sening policy and making decisions and helps to prevent detrimental actions from occurring and future options from being needlessly foreclosed. \Vhile consistency requirements primarily help prevent detrimental actions from occurring and help ensure that future options are not needlessly foreclosed, active participation of the part ofState and federal agencies is also likely to be necessary to implement specific provisions of the LViRP. The first pan ofthis section identifies the actions and programs ofState and federal agencies which should be undertaken in a manner consistent with the LWRP. This is a generic list of actions and programs, as identified by the New York State Department ofState; therefore, some of the actions and programs listed may not be relevant to this LWRP. Pursuant to the State Waterfront Revitalization of Coastal Areas and Inland Waterways Act (Executive Law, Article 42). the Secretary ofState individually and separately notifies affected State agencies ofthose agency actions and programs which are to be undertaken in a manner consistent with approved LWRPs. Similarly, federal agenc), actions and programs subject to consistency requirements are identified in the manner prescribed by the U.S. Coastal Zone Management Act and its implementing regulations. -

To Protect and Preserve Natural Habitat HARBOR REGIONAL PARK “DIRTY DOZEN” WEEDS IDENTIFICATION THIS BOOKLET WAS CREATED TO ASSIST DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARK STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMATIC WEEDS. THE NAME “DIRTY DOZEN” WAS GIVEN TO THE TWELVE PLANTS THAT PREVENT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIVE FLORA DUE TO THEIR HIGH REPRODUCTIVE RATE AND ACCELERATED GROWTH. THE “DIRTY DOZEN” ARE IDENTIFIED, ILLUSTRATED, AND LISTED IN THE ORDER THAT ADVERSELY AFFECT THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM OF HARBOR REGIONAL PARK. 2 MAIN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THIS BOOKLET 1) Support and restore the natural ecosystem found in Harbor Regional Park through the management and control of invasive plants. 2) To establish an Integrated Pest Management Program specific to Harbor Regional Park. 3) Build valuable resources for Department of Recreation and Parks staff and the public. 3 Some exotic plants, as well as native vegetation, with aggressive qualities may be considered a weed if it adversely affect the sustainability of the natural areas and encroaches into developed landscapes. Weed problems can be largely avoided by careful landscape design, soil preparation before planting, and adequately scheduled irrigation and mulching. Weed control can be achieved through a combination of the following five control methods: PREVENTIVE: Preventive method is defined as keeping the weeds from entering or becoming established in the area. Monitoring the area for early detection of unwanted plants is crucial for the preventative methods to work. If a new weed is discovered, immediate actions need to be taken in order to prevent seed production and establishment. CULTURAL: Cultural method is defined as maintenance practices that will make it difficult for weeds to grow or become established, (i.e., select proper plants for the location, irrigation management, and pruning). -

This is an inventory of the vascular alien flora of Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula, Spain) updated to 2018, representing 1068 alien taxa in total. 554 (52.0%) out of them are casual and 514 (48.0%) are established. 87 taxa (8.1% of the total number and 16.8 % of those established) show an invasive behaviour. The geographic zone with more alien plants is the most anthropogenic maritime area. However, the differences among regions decrease when the degree of naturalization of taxa increases and the number of invaders is very similar in all sectors. Only 26.2% of the taxa are more or less abundant, while the rest are rare or they have vanished. The alien flora is represented by 115 families, 87 out of them include naturalised species. The most diverse genera are Opuntia (20 taxa), Amaranthus (18 taxa) and Solanum (15 taxa). Most of the alien plants have been introduced since the beginning of the twentieth century (70.7%), with a strong increase since 1970 (50.3% of the total number). Almost two thirds of alien taxa have their origin in Euro-Mediterranean area and America, while 24.6% come from other geographical areas. The taxa originated in cultivation represent 9.5%, whereas spontaneous hybrids only 1.2%. From the temporal point of view, the rate of Euro-Mediterranean taxa shows a progressive reduction parallel to an increase of those of other origins, which have reached 73.2% of introductions during the last 50 years. -

Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll.
