Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif.

Grotenfelt, Rantamajantie 8, SF-02700 Kauniainen, Finland Summary In the Palaearctic region, Chersotis andereggii auct. has been found to include three species differing from each other mainly in male genital structures and in geographi- cal range. C. andereggii (Boisduval, 1834) occurs from Europe eastward to the Central Asiatic and Siberian mountains ; the isolated Baltic population differs in appearance from that of the Alps and is described as a new subspecies. C acutangula (Staudinger, 1892) stat. n. occurs in the Central Asiatic mountains. C. juncta (Grote, 1878) is widely distributed in North America (the only Nearctic Chersotis), and is now reported from the eastern Palaearctic, having earlier been misidentified as C andereggii. Adults and male genital structures of all three species, as well as the male genitalia of C. reetangida (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), are described and illustrated, and the phylogeny of the group is discussed. Lectotypes are designated for C. andereggii, C acutangula and C exclamans (Eversmann, 1841), a junior synonym of C andereggii. C sjuntensis Kuznetzov, 1958 is possibly a distinct species near C. reetangida, and C hampsoni (A. Bang-Haas, 1910) comb, n. is transferred to the genus Chersotis. 1.

Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY OF THE MALE GENITALIA IN LEPIDOPTERA. By DEV RAJ MEHTA, M. Sc.~ Ph. D. Introduction 197 Historical Review 199 Technique. 201 N ontenclature 201 Function • 205 Comparative Morphology 206 Conclusions in Phylogeny 257 Summary 261 Literature 1 262 INTRODUCTION. In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists.

© Entomologica Fennica. 8.XI.l991 Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Bering ian refuge Kauri Mikkola, J, D. Lafontaine & V. S. Kononenko Mikkola, K., Lafontaine, J.D. & Kononenko, V. S. 1991 : Zoogeography of the Holarctic species of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera): importance of the Beringian refuge. - En to mol. Fennica 2: 157- 173. As a result of published and unpublished revisionary work, literature compi lation and expeditions to the Beringian area, 98 species of the Noctuidae are listed as Holarctic and grouped according to their taxonomic and distributional history. Of the 44 species considered to be "naturall y" Holarctic before this study, 27 (61 %) are confirmed as Holarctic; 16 species are added on account of range extensions and 29 because of changes in their taxonomic status; 17 taxa are deleted from the Holarctic list. This brings the total of the group to 72 species. Thirteen species are considered to be introduced by man from Europe, a further eight to have been transported by man in the subtropical areas, and five migrant species, three of them of Neotropical origin, may have been assisted by man. The m~jority of the "naturally" Holarctic species are associated with tundra habitats. The species of dry tundra are frequently endemic to Beringia. In the taiga zone, most Holarctic connections consist of Palaearctic/ Nearctic species pairs. The proportion ofHolarctic species decreases from 100 % in the High Arctic to between 40 and 75 % in Beringia and the northern taiga zone, and from between 10 and 20 % in Newfoundland and Finland to between 2 and 4 % in southern Ontario, Central Europe, Spain and Primorye.

E-mail: [email protected] The paper contains data on the fauna of the Lepidoptera families Erebidae (excluding subfamilies Lymantriinae and Arctiinae) and Noctuidae of the Saur Mountains (East Kazakhstan). The check list includes 216 species. The map of collecting localities is presented. Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Erebidae, Asia, Kazakhstan, Saur, fauna. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

  • Capital-Breeding Lepidoptera
VOLUME 59, NUMBER 3 143 Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society 59(3), 2005, 143–160 EXTRINSIC EFFECTS ON FECUNDITY-MATERNAL WEIGHT RELATIONS IN CAPITAL-BREEDING LEPIDOPTERA WILLIAM E. MILLER Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108 USA email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Capital-breeding Lepidoptera depend for reproduction on metabolic resources assembled either entirely or primarily by their larvae, the former termed 'perfect' the latter 'imperfect'. Empirical evidence suggests that maternal size determines capi- tal-breeder fecundity. The fecundity-maternal size relation is usually formulated as F = bW + a, where F is fecundity, W is final ma- ternal size in units such as weight of newly transformed pupae, b is the slope, and a the intercept. Exhaustive search yielded 71 fe- cundity-maternal pupal weight relations for 41 capital breeders in 15 families, 58 of which, including 2 previously unpublished, were based on individual specimens, and 13 on grouped specimens. In 22 individual-specimen relations, cohorts divided into 2 or more subgroups were reared simultaneously at different temperatures, on different diets, or exposed to other extrinsic factors. These 22 'multiform' relations were compared with 36 'uniform' relations, and where possible cohort subgroups were compared. Pupal weights of cohort subgroups were affected much oftener than underlying slopes and intercepts. Individual-specimen slopes based on transformed data ranged 0.52-2.09 with a mean and standard error of 1.13±0.04, and slopes did not differ significantly among perfect, imperfect, multiform, and uniform categories. Despite the evident similarity, one relation does not apply to all capital breed- ers.
