Weixin Shengjiao's Beliefs Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao - 64 - Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs The lineage of Weixin Shengjiao Chinese civilization originated from Kunlun civilization. The old Kunlun civilization was spread to Long Mountain River. Gourd river bred Fuxi civilization,so Fuxi civilization continued. From the Taihang Mountains to Zhuolu, to breed the Chinese three emperors’ civilizations: Yellow emperor civilization, Yan emperor civilization, Chiyou emperor civilization. Later it was spread to Henan Qixian Yunmeng Mountain, where Guiguzi’s thoughts were fostered. In 1982, the Kunlun civilization was transmitted along the Taihang Mountains, Yunmeng Mountain, Taiwan’s Penghu Makung to Chan Chi Mountain. These civilizations were inherited by the founder of Weixin Shengjiao, Grand Master Hun Yuan. It set its root in Taiwan, thrived, grew, and transmitted abroad. It has lasted for thirty-three years. - 65 - The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: “For world peace, we have to trace to the origin from the cross-straits peace, Asia to the world.” The project of this Weixin tracing origin includes research work and the joint worship of Chinese ancestors, which are managed by the Taiwan Guiguzi Academy and Weixin Shengjiao Chinese Joint Ancestors Worship Association. These research results can make all Chinese people trace their origin and not forget their roots. It is to identify with their ancestral lineage, by means of which opposition and resentment can be dismissed. Besides, through mutual respect, the “cross-strait peace and world peace can be achieved. Grand Master Hun Yuan in the preface of Ancient Chinese Emperors Recorded stated, “Since ancient time, there have been sages, emperors, saints, and commons doing their jobs to shoulder the calling of gods. Therefore, the immeasurable merits were implemented to the world. We should all bow to history. And take history as a mentor. So Weixin Shengjiao is to look at the evolutionary changes of history as a mentor. In fact, all Chinese people should practice that in order to understand the truth of life. - 66 - Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs Chinese lineage has lasted for seven thousand years, which is blessed by Chinese ancestors’ virtues. There are 15,615 Chinese family names. It is said that the Chinese descendants’ lives are in a state of diasporas. Grand Master Hun Yuan in the preface of Surnames of the Chinese Ancestors said, “For five thousand years, the ethnic strife have led to countless catastrophes and calamities. It was because of the unawareness of mind.” He added, “Falun has been turning. Causes and effects circulate. If one committed evil in this life, the evil would pay back in return after life. This karma has lasted for five thousand years.” Accordingly, Grand Master Hun Yuan commanded Taiwan Guiguzi Academy to conduct the research about “the Chinese catastrophes and war.” Thus, the book The Records of Chinese Catastrophes and War was written. - 67 - The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao Tracing the origin - “the Ceremony of Chinese Joint Ancestor Worship” Grand Master Hun Yuan’s “The Twenty-First Century Chinese Joint Ancestor Worship Ceremony” is a starting point for world peace and harmony, the beginning of Chinese consolidation and respect. It is the time for Chinese people to establish a Pure Land together. Grand Master Hun Yuan on 15 November 2003 taught, “Chinese have the same root, so worshiping ancestors is the beginning of Chinese culture. Chinese people have to observe history and put aside polemic criticism. Then society will be more peaceful.” In 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, the worship ceremonies were held at Linkou Gymnasium. Participants were packed to join. It has been held for ten years. After the ceremony, the holy spirits were sent to the Sanbao Temple of Weixin Shengjiao. Since January 5, the puja was set, food and classics were offered to our ancestors’ holy spirits. After that, our ancestors’ holy spirits will be placed next to both sides of the main hall of Sanbao Temple to be worshiped daily by chanting. - 68 - Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs Weixin Shengjiao: Peaceful mind dharma Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: The concept of “karma”: “All things have causes and effects. Happenings of cause are the mind, Yi, and Tao. Taoism is based on the laws of nature. Therefore, to learn, study, use, and convey I Ching is to prevent reach the state of peaceful mind. Thus, it is a basis for the world peace and harmony.” Grand Master Hun Yuan instructed: “Everyone’s mind is a universe. The mind is the truth. The authentic self stores great wisdom. By means of disclosing this treasure, we can have a peaceful mind and live a happy life. Only Zen Enlightenment can bring peaceful mind and happiness.” Self-cultivation indicates that one can examine one’s behavior and thinking in order to check if there is any deviation. It is necessary to reflect, repent, and make efforts to understand the truth and practice it in one’s daily life. To make the mind peaceful is to obtain happiness. Self-cultivation belongs not only to monks” Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: “I Ching is the key to achieve peaceful mind; thus, Yi is on the mind. Every creature is inseparable from I Ching. Our mind is I Ching. A restless heart means unbalanced. Fuxi’s first line is termed as Heaven; second as Earth. Heaven is thinking, confidence and hope; only humans can reconcile with heaven and earth. I Ching is one, tranquility, and Feng Shui is about natural tranquility. Now people have severely damaged nature. The world is full of - 69 - The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao anxiety, conflict, and exclusion. To understand Feng Shui is to obtain the balance, and have a serene home. That is the realm of peaceful mind. Thus, Feng Shui is the key to a successful life. Life is inseparable from Feng Shui. The exchange of winds in the air and the Shui exists forever, and this is the law of nature. Thousands of creatures depend on winds, water and light. Those elements are from the Buddha of love. They are the driving force of the universe.” Grand Master Hun Yuan enlightened, Weixin Shengjiao is a religion of peaceful mind. To be a saint, sage and Buddha, you have to do those you won’t feel ashamed and have to prove the truth. The method of our peaceful mind is to merge Chinese traditional culture with I Ching, Feng Shui, and hundreds thoughts as one in a melting furnace. Putting this Dharma in mind is what future civilization relies on. - 70 - Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs Weixin Shengjiao: Altruistic dharma Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: “Our Weixin Religion’s altruism is to pray together for mishaps on the earth. We need to rely on everyone to protect the planet; then our next generations can have harmony in the future.” Our altruistic Dharma is the same as Sun Yat-sen, national founder’s advocate that “the purpose of Life is to serve others.” Sage Wang Chan Lao Chu taught, “a Dharma after practice is the right one,” and taught that: “Being willing to deliver truth and being altruistic is the central thought of a real religion. Acala taught: “Altruism are to complete people’s achievement, respect people and The Dharma of this religion is to exercise social education and services to accomplish altruism and bring a successful life to people. - 71 - The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao Weixin Shengjiao: The dharma for disaster elimination Weixin Shengjiao is a dharma for dismissing misfortunes. Grand Master Hun Yuan taught, “The calling of Weixin Shengjiao is to foster sages and talents, dismiss misfortunes, cultivate oneself for the country and pray for people. Therefore, every disciple has to cultivate himself, which is reincarnation of Buddha. The aim of Weixin Shengjiao is to “respect for Heaven command, cultivate oneself for the country, pray for mankind and achieve world peace.” Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: “The world needs peace. It is necessary for the prosperity of every field of industries. Especially it is important for religious mind. Religious thoughts are entirely positive and for human blessing.” Thus whenever there are natural disasters, Grand Master Hun Yuan will bring his disciples, according to religious principles, setting altar, chanting with disciples, setting all kinds of religious lotus, summoning souls into the altar, and offering the altar and gods accept the worship to help turn the wheel of Falun to dismiss misfortunes. - 72 - Chapter 6 Weixin Shengjiao’s beliefs Weixin Shengjiao blended with Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, hundreds of religious thinking in one. One is also I Ching. Chinese culture orthodoxy, I Ching, was invented by the ancestor Fuxi and passed from ancient sages to Confucius. It was synthesized with Confucian philosophy. The Sage Gui Gu Immortal Master Wan Chan Lao Chu passed it to the founder of Weixin heart method of I Ching Feng Shui.” Grand Master Hun Yuan taught: “I Ching heart method is the Dharma of truth.” He said, “The mind is liberation. Only I Ching and Feng Shui can make human reconcile with nature and reach a state of harmony. The coexistence of nature and humans is to reach the truth and peaceful mind. Therefore, Yi is one, the mind. From a tiny spirit - 73 - The New Religion of the World Taiwan Weixin Shengjiao to a gathered one, it shines throughout the world. Thus, I Ching is the light. I Ching is the combination of Heaven, Earth and Human. That is, when the whole world is bright, it will reach the realm of peace.

Taiwan is facing the problem of an aging population and low birth rate. It is therefore of the essence to be able to maintain harmony and stability in society. This study conducts individual case studies to explore how the new religious group, Weixin Shengjiao applies the concept of social innovation to implement its doctrine through lifelong education, and to help the government create a harmonious society. The research found that the central tenet of the Weixin Shengjiao is the fusion of I Ching and Feng Shui, with the thoughts of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism in Chinese culture, to pass on and further promote Chinese culture in modern society. In 1994, the founder of Weixin Shengjiao, Grand Master Hun Yuan, created a lifelong education platform known as I Ching University. The university has three major foci, which implements the core essences of the Weixin Shengjiao of moral, life, environmental, filial piety and cultural education. Based on the local humanistic, social and economic features, I Ching University uses practical, current, realistic innovations for widespread distribution, in order to nurture talents and create a harmonious society.

Out of the world’s four ancient civilizations, only the Chinese culture has remain fairly unbroken in its continuity, and the I Ching can be found at the root of Chinese philosophy and thoughts. All that governs Chinese culture can be traced back to I Ching, which describes the laws of harmony for the universe at large, and is the path for returning spirituality to the empty space (akasadhatu). I Ching originated from the Three Sovereigns and the Five Emperors, inherited by the master of wisdom Wan Chan Lao Chu and nurtured into the Guigu culture. The spiritual method is the origin, which is the root and source of I Ching, truth and wisdom, is both of Master Wang and Mentor Guigu, and is the awareness of the self. Spirituality is gained through the method. The truth from the universe’s law of harmony is our origin and the infinite depth of our spirituality. The origin and root of spirituality is also the law of harmony, under the pseudonym of Guigu. The Guiguzui spiritual method using I Ching teachings, a superior spiritual method to true peace where man is taught peace can only be achieved through peace. • Resolving Grievances to Make Life Harmonious”
$ The Journal of CESNUR $ A Comparison Between Daesoon Jinrihoe’s “Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence” and Weixin Shengjiao’s “Resolving Grievances to Make Life Harmonious” Taesoo Kim Seoul National University [email protected] ABSTRACT: The article compares two parallel concepts, “resolution of grievances for mutual beneficence” in Daesoon Jinrihoe, one of Korea’s largest new religions, and “resolving grievances to make life harmonious” in the Taiwanese new religion Weixin Shengjiao. Exploring the two concepts show their similarities, as both are grounded in a sacred history and emphasize ancient grievances of ancestral times. Differences, however, also emerge. Daesoon Jinrihoe’s resolution of grievances is based on the idea of the “Reordering of the Universe (Heaven and Earth),” performed by the Supreme God, Sangje, incarnated on Earth as Kang Jeungsan (1871–1909). Weixin Shengjiao places more emphasis on the individual solutions of grievances based on the practical aspects of I Ching, i.e. divination and Feng Shui. Both religions see themselves as including the Three Teachings of Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism, but Weixin Shengjiao seems to rely more on Buddhist sources, while Daesoon Jinrihoe, which also has some Buddhist features, seems to share more elements with Daoism and Confucianism. KEYWORDS: Daesoon Jinrihoe, Kang Jeungsan, Reordering of the Universe, Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence, Weixin Shengjiao, Resolving Grievances to Make Life Harmonious, Hun Yuan, I Ching, Chinese Folk Religion, Weixinism. $ The Journal of CESNUR $ The Supranational Messianism of Weixin Shengjiao: Unifying the Two Chinas Thanks to the Celebration of Mythical Ancestors Bernadette Rigal-Cellard Université Bordeaux Montaigne [email protected] ABSTRACT: Weixin Shengjiao (WS) sees itself as helping Taiwan fulfill a paramount mission: the cultural and mystical reunification of the two Chinas to solve cross-Strait tensions and promote peace and prosperity in the country and in the world. This article focuses on one specific ritual WS has elaborated to this end. The Ancestors’ Ceremony, held on January 1, 2017, is analyzed to demonstrate how WS astutely combines contemporary Taiwanese politics with the Three Teachings, through the grandiose celebration of the three mythical Chinese ancestors, the Yellow Emperor Huang Ti, the Yan Emperor, and the so far estranged Emperor Chiyou, along with the deified Chinese sage Guiguzi. KEYWORDS: Chinese Mythical Ancestry, Resolving Old Grievances, National Messianism, Cross- Strait Issues, Weixin Shengjiao, Weixinism, Hun Yuan. Introduction Weixin Shengjiao (WS) came to me as a gift in December 2016, when I was invited by its Grand Master Hun Yuan, together with J. Gordon Melton, Massimo Introvigne, and several scholars from Korea, to attend the impressive Ancestors’ Ceremony held on January 1, 2017, in Taipei, and the many events of The International New Religion Interaction Forum of Weixin Shengjiao in the following days. Our hosts took us to visit several of their temples and holy places in the Taipei area, in Taichung, Nantou, and Yilan. Since it is a virtually unknown religion in the West (with the exception of Introvigne 2016; 2017), this paper intends to locate it on the map of world religions.
