  • English for the Indigenous People of Sarawak: Focus on the Bidayuhs
CHAPTER 6 English for the Indigenous People of Sarawak: Focus on the Bidayuhs Patricia Nora Riget and Xiaomei Wang Introduction Sarawak covers a vast land area of 124,450 km2 and is the largest state in Malaysia. Despite its size, its population of 2.4 million people constitutes less than one tenth of the country’s population of 30 million people (as of 2015). In terms of its ethnic composition, besides the Malays and Chinese, there are at least 10 main indigenous groups living within the state’s border, namely the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Bisaya, Kelabit, Lun Bawang, Penan, Kayan, Kenyah and Kajang, the last three being collectively known as the Orang Ulu (lit. ‘upriver people’), a term that also includes other smaller groups (Hood, 2006). The Bidayuh (formerly known as the Land Dayaks) population is 198,473 (State Planning Unit, 2010), which constitutes roughly 8% of the total popula- tion of Sarawak. The Bidayuhs form the fourth largest ethnic group after the Ibans, the Chinese and the Malays. In terms of their distribution and density, the Bidayuhs are mostly found living in the Lundu, Bau and Kuching districts (Kuching Division) and in the Serian district (Samarahan Division), situated at the western end of Sarawak (Rensch et al., 2006). However, due to the lack of employment opportunities in their native districts, many Bidayuhs, especially youths, have migrated to other parts of the state, such as Miri in the east, for job opportunities and many have moved to parts of Peninsula Malaysia, espe- cially Kuala Lumpur, to seek greener pastures. Traditionally, the Bidayuhs lived in longhouses along the hills and were involved primarily in hill paddy planting.

  • Language Use and Attitudes As Indicators of Subjective Vitality: the Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia
Vol. 15 (2021), pp. 190–218 http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24973 Revised Version Received: 1 Dec 2020 Language use and attitudes as indicators of subjective vitality: The Iban of Sarawak, Malaysia Su-Hie Ting Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Andyson Tinggang Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Lilly Metom Universiti Teknologi of MARA The study examined the subjective ethnolinguistic vitality of an Iban community in Sarawak, Malaysia based on their language use and attitudes. A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.

  • A-306 Peat and Organic Soils Challenges in Road
15TH INTERNATIONAL PEAT CONGRESS 2016 Abstract No: A-306 PEAT AND ORGANIC SOILS CHALLENGES IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN SARAWAK: JKR SARAWAK EXPERIENCE Vincent Tang Chok Khing Public Works Department Sarawak *Corresponding author: [email protected] SUMMARY Road construction on peat/organic soils has always posed challenges to Engineers, Contractors and policy-makers, be it a technical, contractual obligation, or cost implication. The success of road construction on soft soils relies on various important factors such as proper planning, analysis, design, construction, control and supervision. For Engineers, the primary boundary conditions are the stability and allowable settlement in terms of serviceability limits both as a function of time. Our current observation reveals that many of the road embankments and culvert foundation failures are associated with geotechnical factors. Majority of these failures are still repeating and quite identical / similar in nature that they are caused by failure to comply with one or a combination of the above factors. This paper presents some of the case histories of the road embankment construction closely related to the geotechnical factors investigated by the Author. Lastly, some simple guidelines on Method of Treatment, Cost and Design Principle to prevent future embankment failures related to geotechnical factors on soft ground are presented. INTRODUCTION Sarawak has approximately 1.7 million ha of tropical peat that covers 13% of the total land area (12.4 million ha.). It is the largest area of peatland in Malaysia. It constitutes nearly 63% of the total peatland of the country. More than 80% of the peats are more than 2.5 m depth.

Paradoxically, although livelihood is a major concern for these communities, their integration into the mainstream of development seems a remote and endless problem. This article, therefore, has three objectives. Firstly, it discusses the socio-economic dynamics of the Sarawak-Kalimantan border com- munities whose villages are obscured from the mainstream of development. • Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia - Sarawak, Malaysia “Head to Head”
Borderlands and Tourism Development in Kalimantan Island: Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia - Sarawak, Malaysia “Head to Head” Syaiful Muazir Department of Architecture, Tanjungpura University, Pontianak, Indonesia [email protected] Horng-Chang Hsieh Department of Urban Planning, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan [email protected] As part of the regions that share lands and boundaries, Sarawak-Malaysia and Kalimantan Barat- Indonesia have respective characteristics in the borderlands treatment. This paper aims to explore and compare the border areas between two nations, ranging from the borderlands profiles, (tourism) development and planning, and their opportunities. Besides, this paper also wants to highlight tourism development as one of the strategies. This paper uses documentary research to seek “text and context” by narratively describing and compiling the documents. From the discussion, it can be seen that both regions have different characteristics of conditions and problems. For tourism development, different approaches are also “colored” with timing, momentum, and priorities; as influenced and supported by the national plans. Tourism in the borderlands is the impetus in which each regions has already been aware of this potential because of the traction of informal flow, accessibility, supply, and demand. Furthermore, we argue that if tourism has exist at the first place, in the future, by its backward linkages, it will encourage more physical and economic development and cooperation between nations. Keywords: borderland, tourism development, Sarawak, Kalimantan Barat 1. INTRODUCTION diplomatic relationship. There is a concept of “blood-brothers” that can be tracked through Indonesia and Malaysia have a long historical ideology, history, commonalities of race, ethnicity, background of bilateral relations, as well as on the and cultural forms.

  • The Origin of Canada Hill — a Result of Strike-Slip Deformation and Hydraulically Powered Uplift at the Pleistocene/Holocene Border?
Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia, Volume 60, December 2014, pp. 35 – 44 The origin of Canada Hill — A result of strike-slip deformation and hydraulically powered uplift at the Pleistocene/Holocene border? FRANZ L. KESSLER1 & JOHN JONG2 1Curtin University of Technology, Department of Applied Geology, CDT 250, 98009 Miri, Sarawak Currently at Lundin Malaysia BV, Lot 13A-01, Level 13A, Menara HLA, No. 3 Jalan Kia Peng, 50450, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Email address: [email protected] 2JX Nippon Oil and Gas Exploration (Deepwater Sabah) Limited Level 51, Menara 3 PETRONAS, Persiaran KLCC, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088 Kuala Lumpur Abstract: Canada Hill, located in the centre of Miri City in Sarawak, is roofed by terrace deposits of Pleistocene/Holocene age, which implies a very young uplift of this complex anticline. The present-day Canada Hill structure is explained by strike-slip deformation, in conjunction with a semi-liquid pillow of Setap Formation clay. Horizontal pressure acting in NW-SE direction, and the likely presence of a strike-slip system with late inversion triggered a ‘diapiric’ remobilization of the clay reservoir. The flow of liquefied clay was refocused upwards, namely in direction of the lowest pressure. Miri Formation remnants, the roof of forming clay pillow, and overlying Quarternary terrace deposits, were subsequently uplifted and emerged from the Pleistocene peneplain. However, the adjacent country rock, including the main part of the Miri Field, was hardly affected. Assuming a hydraulic uplift in the order of 400 feet and a lithostatic pressure gradient of 0.9 psi/foot, lateral pressure above the 360 psi equilibrium pressure would have prompted the clay core to move.
