I knew Trevor for over 30 years and he lived close by, as such I would, or Frank [Norman] would, bring him to walking football each Friday which he looked forward to. In the early days we went to the same church in North Common and our kids grew up together. Trevor was a hockey player and often on a Saturday evening he would phone and come round to my house to get his various injuries looked at by my wife, a nurse, before either setting off to hospital or returning home bandaged up, always with a smile and a cheeky grin. He never really played football before joining us, which showed in his first couple of sessions, but found his position between the posts where he proved to be a fine goalie. When the sides were picked each Friday, I always wanted Trevor in my team. And on the way home in the car he would talk me through every shot he saved or, disappointingly any goals he let in. He was extremely likeable, very loving and always humble. He will be greatly missed. Pete Ricketts

I only knew Trevor from his days since he starting playing walking football. Despite being very competitive as a goalkeeper, admonishing himself if he thought he had made a mistake, he would always congratulate somebody who scored passed him. As Pete said above, he would review every incident after our matches and analyse what he might have done differently or acknowledge the goal scorer or a piece of luck that went in his favour. He was as everybody has said recently, one of the nicest blokes you could wish to meet. Always enjoyed everyone’s

Newsletter no 28, June 2020 Page 1 company and a bit of banter but loved his adopted game, as he only came into football later in life. He took playing for the league teams seriously and as above was apologetic when he thought he had made a mistake and let the team down. He never let the team down, he was always an excellent keeper and was a great ambassador for the club and the sport in general. Trevor will be sadly missed by everyone in the club. We have been allowed to form a limited guard of honour at his funeral. The service will be streamed live and when we know the details, Martin will send them to you all. Once the pandemic is over we will arrange a memorial event at The AJN Stadium. Mike Slucutt

It was reported in Newsletter No 25 that the club web site had been redesigned and updated by Andy Morse. Additionally it has been moved to a new host, to future-proof it and make it more resilient. In doing this a problem was found with taking possession of our domain name (keynshamtownfc.org.uk). To get around this, a new one has been created and the club web site can now be found at . A re- direct should be operation in case the old address is used. All future club stationery and promotional material will carry this address, so please quote it when passing information onto anyone else. In order to make our business more resilient and bring all parts of the club together (seniors, juniors and ourselves) we will in future be using G Suite (a Google product). This will give us the ability to have Keynsham Town email addresses which you will see us all using shortly. These will be directed to our personal emails, but it means that should anyone suddenly leave the club or be incapacitated, it will be able to be picked by somebody else immediately. There will also be storage space on Google Drive (cloud storage) for us to backup our vital databases, policies, minutes etc, rather than run the risk of keeping them solely on personal computers.

After discussion amongst the committee we have arranged a trial-training session for invited members in early July, in accordance with FA guidelines. If successful, which we hope and anticipate that it will be, it will be rolled to all members who expressed an interest in participating. It will not, unless the guidelines change in the meanwhile, involve any form of playing walking football, although some work with the ball will be included. Chris Hooper has kindly put together a fitness-building regime, which we look forward to beginning. More details will be given as matters progress.

Newsletter no 28, June 2020 Page 2 It is 1963 and I have just turned 18 and myself and all my footballing mates have formed a football team to play in the 5th Division of the Church of England League. The name of our team is Knowle Methodist Youth Club. The season has not started too well. We are near the bottom of the league with 1 point. We have no problem scoring goals we just concede twice as many. It’s autumn time and we have a home fixture with Wyndham United, a team from Broomhill. Their currently half way in the league. We play at Hartcliffe School (a very muddy pitch). So to stop the rot we need sign a centre-half. My local was the Knowle Hotel and one night whilst having a few, I met an old mate of mine who was not playing for anybody at the time. I asked him he would play for us in the match against Wyndham United. He agreed and the scene was set. Bob Mills or "Millie" as the team nicknamed him later, was 6 foot 2 inches tall, good at heading, two footed and did not like losing. Just the man we needed so I thought. So to the day of the match and at half time we were 7-0 down. The team gathered except for "Millie" who stood alone giving me a load of daggers. The second half started and most of our team really did not look at all interested. We were playing much better and scored two quick goals. 7-2 down but Wyndham United scored another 2 goals to put them 9-2 up. Wyndham started to fool around and tried to get everybody on the score sheet. Boy were they in for a surprise we scored 4 quick goals and with 10 minutes to go we were 9-6 down and we had a slight chance. We hit the post twice, had two cleared off the line and missed two or three half chances. Myself and my mate on the wing scored 3 each. Alas finally the whistle blew for full-time and the referee had to ask the two captains what the score was!!! Talk about a game of two halves. There cannot be many players at any level of the game that have scored a hat-trick and their team score 6 goals and still finish on the losing side. Later on in the season we beat them 5-3 and I scored 3. The next season we met again at The Bush Playing fields and were leading 4-1 with twenty minutes to go and lost 7-5!!! PS "Millie" our centre-half up the pub later on was still in shock, played for a couple of season before concentrating on playing cricket for Knowle and Barrow Gurney. But that is another story. Alan Sale

Newsletter no 28, June 2020 Page 3 During the usual clear out I came across a 1959 edition of the Bristol Evening Post. In a previous newsletter I reported a sporting comeback when Bristol Rovers, 4-0 down at half-time to Leeds United, came back to draw 4-4. Well this paper also reported a Rovers 4-4 draw, although this time it was Swansea who made the comeback. Those were the days when goals were a- plenty! Rovers defensive lapses? Nothing changes does it!

Newsletter no 28, June 2020 Page 4 Just to maintain the balance, here is a report in the same edition, of that other team that plays the other side of the city, but whose name I forget!

Newsletter no 28, June 2020 Page 5 The FA have several scenarios planned for starting Non-League football. It is hoped to play the FA Vase and Trophy in full, but the FA Cup Third Round is contractually obliged to be on first weekend in January, which may affect the dates and numbers of earlier rounds If the leagues, a. Start in August - normal season, b. September/October Full league season but no league or county cups, c. November to January, not possible to play a full season. Either a half season (home OR away matches) or divisions split in half on a geographical basis, d. Later than January, leagues may be held over until the 2012/22 season. The normal season may go on into May. The most likely, current scenario is starting in September.
