The lockdown has already disproportionately hurt marginalized communities due to loss of livelihood and lack of food, shelter, health, and other basic needs. The COVID 19 lockdown strategy after 3 rd May in order to free up unaffected area has been made by the government, as per the national COVID 19 guidelines, districts are divided into green with zero Covid- 19 cases, orange with less than five cases and red if there are more than six COVID-19 cases. Uttara Kannada district is under Orange zone. There are 794 endosulfan pesticide affected victims in Sirsi-Siddapura, Ankola- Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannanda district. These victims are in urgent need of support as they can’t work, their care givers are daily wage labourer and their income is impacted and they are in remote locations they do not have access to essential items. Endosulfan victims are those who had an adverse effect due to aerial and hand spray of endosulfan to control the pest during the early part of 1980’s. Most of the people lost their active parts of the body and mental balance too. The new born babies also got severely affected making them totally inactive and immobile. One can imagine the disaster caused by the endosulfan spray and the socio-economic damage made on mankind. The life of Victims and their family members are miserable in all aspects due to lack of care and facilities which needs to be looked into. SCODWES is working for these victims since last 4 years & providing health care services at their door steps through our Mobile Medical Unit initiative with the help of Department of Health & Family welfare, Govt of Karnataka. These 794 endosulfan victims are spread over 218 villages in 26 Panchayats of Sirsi- Siddapur, Ankola- Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district. To support these marginalized communities during the outbreak of pandemic and lockdown, there is need of supply of essential items like grocery and hygiene kits. We have planned to provide dry ration and non-food essential items to these 794 endosulfan victims’ families. Project Objective: • To provide the basic essential needs to the Endosulfan victims and their care givers to minimize their discomfort during lockdown. • To minimize spreading of COVID-19 in the community by creating awareness among the community. Geography: 218 villages of Sirsi- Siddapura, Ankola –Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district. Target Segment : The project beneficiaries are the 794 endosulfan victims, their family members of 218 villages in 26 Gram Panchayats (where these Endosulfan affected families reside) of Sirsi- Siddapura, Ankol- Kumta & Honnavar Taluk of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka state. Sl.no Taluk Total Endosulfan Victim 1 Honnavara 355 2 Ankola 111 3 Kumta 161 4 Sirsi 62 5 Siddapura 105 1. Humanitarian Aid Providing essential food and non-food items / Hygiene kits for 794 endosulfan affected families 5 taluk of Uttara Kannada district: Most of the victims affected by endosulfan pesticide & their care givers are from marginalized & daily wage workers who do not have buying capacity; hence they were not prepared for this sudden suspension. These family’s needs to be supported with food kits and non-food essentials. These families will be distributed food kit in line with agreed norms of Sphere India Standards (2100 kcals per person per day). As of now, these families have been provided rice and wheat by Govt. Hence we are providing essential dry ration except rice and wheat for 20 – 25 days for a family of 4-5 members. We will ensure that appropriate government guidelines are followed, personal safety measures are taken and physical distancing norms followed. Providing health services, facilitating early detection and Screening of COVID 19 through our Mobile Medical Unit: We help/facilitate Government health authorities in early detection and screening of the patients with symptoms through our Mobile Medical Unit which is operating on daily basis to provide health services at these villages along with providing basic health services. Davanagere District Disaster Management Plan CHAPTER –1 DISTRICT PROFILE - 1 - Davanagere District Disaster Management Plan 1. INTRODUCTION A great Maratha warrior by name Appaji Rao had rendered great service to Hyder Ali Khan in capturing Chitradurga fort. Hyder Ali Khan was very much pleased with Appaji Rao, who had made great sacrifices in the wars waged by him. Davanagere was handed over to Appaji Rao as a Jahagir. It was a very small village of about 500 houses in its perview. Appaji Rao had to toil for the upliftment of this area by inviting Maratha businessmen from neighbouring Maharastra. A large number of Marathas arrived at this place to carry on business in silk, brasserie and other materials. In due course, due to the incessant efforts of Appaji Rao, the Davanagere village grew into a city. Businessmen from neigbouring areas also migrated to try their fortunes in the growing city were successful beyond imagination in earning and shaping their future careers. These circumstances created an opportunity for the perennial growth of the town in modern days. The word ‘Davanager’ is derived from “Davanagere”, which means a rope in kannada language which was used for tying the horses by the villages. Around 1811 A.D., this area came to be called as ‘Davanagere’. Davanagere district occupies 12th place in Karnataka State with a population of 17,89,693 as per the general census of 2001. The following table demonstrates the block wise population of Davanagere district and the rate of literacy. The DDMP has been formed keeping in view of past experiences, suiting to the needs under the able leadership of Deputy Commissioner and in co-operation of all other departments and public at large.

  • Age and Rate of Growth of the Indian Mackerel, Ras- Trelliger Canagurta (Cuvier) with Notes on Its Fishery at Karwar
AGE AND RATE OF GROWTH OF THE INDIAN MACKEREL, RAS- TRELLIGER CANAGURTA (CUVIER) WITH NOTES ON ITS FISHERY AT KARWAR BY N. RADHAKRISHNAN {Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) INTRODUCTION Information on the growth of a fish is an important pre-requisite in under standing the dynamics of fish populations. In fishery yield studies, such as those of Beverton and Holt (1957) the growth is a basic variable determining the exploitable stock and yield from the fishery. The present paper deals with the age and growth studies of the Indian mackerel incorporating the results of investigations carried out at Karwar from January 1954 to March 1959. At Karwar, the mackerel season generally commences in October and ends in the following March. After this period, only stray specimens are netted. LENGTH FREQUENCY STITDIBS For purposes of this study, the total length of the fish was taken into account. The specimens used in the present investigation were obtained from the inshore fishing grounds around Karwar by the shore seines {Rampan and Yendi) which are the most important gears used all along the Kanara coast. Text figures 1 to 4 show the length frequency distribution of samples obtained at monthly intervals from January 1954 to March 1959. In some months, where the samples were too small to form a comparison with other months, the data for these months were neglected from the length frequency analysis. Further, the monthly data of each year have been pooled into three periods, (t) January to March (2) April to September and (3) October to December. This was done for the sake of convenience, to make comparison from one period to the other more uniform.

Tain temple and deity is Lord Shiva, who is also known as Gokarna, India 2 Mahabhaleshwara. This temple houses what is believed to be original image of Lord Shiva's lingam. There are many other temples all over this small town. Ankola and Kumta on Highway 17 are the main towns near Gokarna. Gokarna is historically known as one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centers and is located on what was once unspoiled beach near the estuary of river Aghanashini with its palm trees, other colorful tropical fruit and flower trees. Of late due to the numbers of tourists the character of this town has changed. This town is no longer just a center of pilgrimage though massive numbers of devotees still visit the town for the purposes of offering prayers and worship to Lord Shiva. Due to its laid back unspoiled and rustic nature, many younger western tourists started visiting Gokarna about a decade ago.
