The lockdown has already disproportionately hurt marginalized communities due to loss of livelihood and lack of food, shelter, health, and other basic needs. The COVID 19 lockdown strategy after 3 rd May in order to free up unaffected area has been made by the government, as per the national COVID 19 guidelines, districts are divided into green with zero Covid- 19 cases, orange with less than five cases and red if there are more than six COVID-19 cases. Uttara Kannada district is under Orange zone. There are 794 endosulfan pesticide affected victims in Sirsi-Siddapura, Ankola- Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannanda district. These victims are in urgent need of support as they can’t work, their care givers are daily wage labourer and their income is impacted and they are in remote locations they do not have access to essential items. Endosulfan victims are those who had an adverse effect due to aerial and hand spray of endosulfan to control the pest during the early part of 1980’s. Most of the people lost their active parts of the body and mental balance too. The new born babies also got severely affected making them totally inactive and immobile. One can imagine the disaster caused by the endosulfan spray and the socio-economic damage made on mankind. The life of Victims and their family members are miserable in all aspects due to lack of care and facilities which needs to be looked into. SCODWES is working for these victims since last 4 years & providing health care services at their door steps through our Mobile Medical Unit initiative with the help of Department of Health & Family welfare, Govt of Karnataka. These 794 endosulfan victims are spread over 218 villages in 26 Panchayats of Sirsi- Siddapur, Ankola- Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district. To support these marginalized communities during the outbreak of pandemic and lockdown, there is need of supply of essential items like grocery and hygiene kits. We have planned to provide dry ration and non-food essential items to these 794 endosulfan victims’ families. Project Objective: • To provide the basic essential needs to the Endosulfan victims and their care givers to minimize their discomfort during lockdown. • To minimize spreading of COVID-19 in the community by creating awareness among the community.
