  • Low Effort Crowdsourcing
Low-effort Crowdsourcing: leveraging peripheral attention for crowd work Abstract Crowdsourcing systems leverage short bursts of focused attention from many contributors to achieve a goal. By requiring people’s full attention, existing crowdsourc- ing systems fail to leverage people’s cognitive surplus in the many settings for which they may be distracted, performing or waiting to perform another task, or barely paying attention. In this paper, we study opportunities for low-effort crowdsourcing that enable people to con- tribute to problem solving in such settings. We dis- cuss the design space for low-effort crowdsourcing, and through a series of prototypes, demonstrate interaction techniques, mechanisms, and emerging principles for enabling low-effort crowdsourcing. • Lost Knowledge of the Imagination
Praise for Gary Lachman “The Lost Knowledge of the Imagination rejoins the parted Red Sea of modern intellect, demonstrating how rationalism and esotericism are not divided forces but necessary complements and parts of a whole in the human wish for understanding. More still, he elevates the relevancy of spiritual philosophies that we are apt to short-shrift, from Crowley to positive thinking, and issues a warning: If thoughts are causative, it is all the more vital that we, the thinkers, know ourselves.” Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America and One Simple Idea: How Positive Thinking Reshaped Modern Life “A cracking author.” Lynn Picknett, Magonia Review of Books “Lachman is an easy to read author yet has a near encyclopaedic knowledge of esotericism and is hence able to offer many different perspectives on the subject at hand.” Living Traditions magazine “Lachman’s sympathetic, but not uncritical, account of [Rudolf Steiner’s] life is to be recommended to anyone who wishes to be better informed about this gifted and remarkable man.” Kevin Tingay, The Christian Parapsychologist “Lachman challenges many contemporary theories by reinserting a sense of the spiritual back into the discussion” Leonard Schlain, author of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess “Lachman’s depth of reading and research are admirable.” Scientific and Medical Network Review For Kathleen Raine (1908-2003), who showed the way Contents Title Page Dedication Acknowledgments Chapter One: A Different Kind of Knowing Chapter Two: A Look Inside the World Chapter Three: The Knower and the Known Chapter Four: The Way Within Chapter Five: The Learning of the Imagination Chapter Six: The Responsible Imagination Further Reading Also by Gary Lachman Copyright Acknowledgments My thanks go to my editor Christopher Moore for taking on the project and to the staff of the British Library where most of the research was done.

  • Not the Only Word
REVIEWS Not the Only Word Kenneally, Christine. 2007. The First Word: The Search for the Origins of Language. New York: Penguin Books. By Lyle Jenkins Christine Kenneally’s The First Word is a review of work in the area of language evolution intended as an introductory overview for the general reader and, as such, is a valuable resource for pointers to work in progress on a wide range of evolutionary topics; these include primate calls, birdsong, categorical perception, gene research, computer simulation studies, to name a few. This is the subject of the second and third parts of the book. These parts contain the most valuable information on language evolution research. However, the first part of the book is devoted to interviews with Noam Chomsky, Sue Savage–Rumbaugh, Stephen Pinker and Paul Bloom, and Philip Lieberman. Here the stage is set for a kind of ‘linguistics wars’ on language evolution, with Chomsky on one side of a ‘debate’ and just about everybody else on the other side. This is the least convincing part of the book, as we will see. According to Kenneally, the study of the evolution of language can be divided into several phases — one starting in 1866, when “the Société de Linguistique of Paris declared a moratorium on the topic” (p.7), and another phase when “the official ban developed fairly seamlessly into a virtual ban” (p.79) which was maintained, it is claimed, until the publication of a paper by Pinker and Bloom around 1990 (but see below). The “virtual ban” on the study of evolution of language seems to be ascribed by Kenneally almost solely to Chomsky.

Bull, G., Thompson, A., Searson, M., Garofalo, J., Park, J., Young, C., & Lee, J (2008). Connecting informal and formal learning: Experiences in the age of participatory media. Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 8(2), 100-107. Connecting Informal and Formal Learning Experiences in the Age of Participatory Media Glen Bull University of Virginia Ann Thompson Iowa State University Mike Searson Kean University Joe Garofalo University of Virginia John Park, Carl Young, and John Lee North Carolina State University The renaissance stimulated by the World Wide Web is generating multiple formats and channels of communication and creativity. These include blogs, wikis, instant messaging, and texting in the realm of writing, podcasting in audio, countless sites such as Flickr for distribution and sharing of images, and video shared via YouTube and other sites. The Pew Internet and American Life project reports that the majority of all teens are now engaged in active creation of online content. The rise of social media reflects new opportunities and outlets for creativity. Increased youth engagement through these activities represents a repurposing of what Clay Shirky terms a cognitive surplus. Shirky, a professor in the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University, believes that a movement from passive activities such as watching television to more active and creative pursuits is emerging as a use of the cognitive surplus in the Web 2.0 era. Collaborative projects such as Wikipedia demonstrate that a previously unexploited collective intelligence can be tapped when the right conditions are established.
