I was born in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, April 21, 1932. Brower: That means tomorrow you are seventy- Hampton: -four. Brower: Let’s start in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Can you give us a little information about the town and what you recollect of being born there, and your early years? Hampton: I didn’t live there very long, but I do remember very strongly that in Jeannette, for some reason I got the impression that all of America was integrated, because we lived in a family – we shared a house with a white family and our family. I thought that it was that way everywhere until we left Jeannette. Then immediately it changed. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or
