Media Cuts in Canada, November 2008 – September 2016 Data compiled from Canadian newspapers in French and English (including La Presse, Le Devoir, Canadian Newsstand- Major Dailies and Canadian Newsstand – Torstar databases); industry publications (Masthead), Twitter (@CanadianMediaLayoffs), media blogs (Fagstein media blog, Canadian Magazines blog, J-Source and Projet-J). There may be other cuts that were not reported or were not covered in the sources that I was able to access, but this should give an overview of the trends in the industry from November 2008 – November 2015. 2016 Print September • Faced with declining revenue and circulation, the 140-year old Presbyterian Record announces that it will cease publication with its December 2016 issue. While an exact number is not given, the announcement names 9 people (editors, writers, circulation manager, art director, designer and website manager).1 • Rogers Media announces an overhaul of its magazine business in response to a decline in print advertising revenue and subscriptions. 4 publications (Canadian Business, MoneySense, Flare and Sportsnet) will go digital-only, Maclean’s will become a monthly rather than a weekly publication, and Today’s Parent and Chatelaine will only publish bi- monthly. Rogers is also hoping to sell all of its business magazines and its French publications. Club Toronto City Editor Toronto Launch Event for The Onion Set for Sept. 28 TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2011) - The A.V. Club Toronto has appointed John Semley, a Toronto-based editor and writer, as its city editor. In his new position, Semley will oversee the editorial operations of the A.V. Club Toronto, which will feature local entertainment and arts news and commentary. The A.V. Club Toronto will be distributed free each week in Toronto starting Thursday, Sept. 29, along with The Onion as part of a new arrangement announced in July between the Toronto Star, Canada's largest newspaper, and the American-based owner of the weekly news parody The Onion and its pop-culture sister publication, The A.V. Club. Semley has been a staff writer and contributing editor since 2009 with Torontoist, a widely-read local website. He has also written for Toronto Life, The Grid, The Walrus, Exclaim and Maisonneuve. Semley has a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University and a Masters of Arts in cinema studies from the University of Toronto. The official launch event for The Onion and The A.V. Club Toronto will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28, at The Drake Hotel. The event is open to the public starting at 8:00 p.m. There will be a $5 entry fee, which will be donated to the United Way of Greater Toronto. The event will include special DJ sets by Jay Ferguson (Sloan) and Justin Peroff (Broken Social Scene). -

TORSTAR - Interim Management’s Discussion and Analysis For the three and six months ended June 30, 2011 and 2010 Dated: July 28, 2011 The following review and analysis of Torstar Corporation’s (the “Company” or “Torstar”) operations and financial position for the three and six months ended June 30, 2011 and 2010 is supplementary to, and should be read in conjunction with the audited consolidated financial statements of Torstar Corporation for the year ended December 31, 2010 set forth in the Company’s Annual Report for such fiscal year and incorporated by reference in the Company’s renewal Annual Information Form dated March 22, 2011. Torstar reports its financial results under International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”) in Canadian dollars. Per share amounts are calculated using the weighted average number of shares outstanding for the applicable period. Torstar’s 2010 financial results included in this Interim MD&A have been restated to an IFRS basis. Non-IFRS measures Management uses both operating profit, as presented in the consolidated statement of income, and EBITDA as measures to assess the performance of the reporting units and business segments. EBITDA is a measure that is also used by many of Torstar’s shareholders, creditors, other stakeholders and analysts as a proxy for the amount of cash generated by Torstar’s operations or by a reporting unit or segment. EBITDA is not the actual cash provided by operating activities and is not a recognized measure of financial performance under IFRS. Torstar calculates EBITDA as the consolidated, segment or division operating profit as presented on the consolidated statement of income, which is before charges for interest and taxes, adjusted for amortization and depreciation.
