Harizoly/Zoly ii Resumé RESUME Le Tsiperifery ou poivre sauvage de Madagascar a une réputation bien établie sur le marché international des épices. Son exploitation commerciale et traditionnelle lui confère un intérêt économique et social. Pourtant la durabilité de la filière est menacée par des pratiques de collecte très destructives, la dégradation de son habitat potentiel et des fluctuations de la quantité et de la qualité des produits exportés. Ces menaces sont accentuées par l’insuffisance des connaissances scientifiques qui permettraient de poser les bases de sa gestion et valorisation durable. La présente étude a été menée dans le but de palier ce manque d’informations scientifques. Elle a été focalisée sur la caractérisation de Tsiperifery qui intègre différents aspects de la diversité : morphologique, génétique, biologique et écologique. L’étude a mobilisé différentes méthodes complémentaires. La caractérisation de la diversité morphologique et génétique a été focalisée sur la morphometrie des individus adultes et l’analyse des ADN nucléaires et chloroplastiques. La caractérisation de la diversité biologique a été axée sur l’analyse de la variation du cycle phénologique reproductrice. La caractérisation de la diversité ecologique a considéré la diversité des espèces associées et de la structure démographique. Les échantillons utilisés pour ces analyses ont été collectés sur 179 pieds adultes de Tsiperifery répartis dans 5 sites se trouvant dans l’aire naturelle de distriburion de la ressource. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que la diversité naturelle observée au sein de Tsiperifery se traduit par une variation des principaux traits morphologiques, génétiques, phénologiques et écologiques. Ils constituent des bases scientifiques intéressantes pour la la gestion durable de Tsiperifery . Ils ont permis d’identifier des axes d’orientations plus précis pour la recherche et de tirer des recommandations opérationnelles en vue de la gestion et de la valorisation durable de cette ressource phytogénétique d’importance économique, sociale et environnementale. Mots clés : Tsiperifery , poivre sauvage de Madagascar, Piper , diversité, gestion durable. iii Summary SUMMARY Tsiperifery or Madagascar wild pepper has a well established reputation in the international spice market. Its commercial and traditional exploitations make it of economic and social interest. However, the sustainability of Tsiperifery ’s sector is threatened by a destructive gathering method, potential habitat degradation and instability of the quantity and quality of exported products. These threats are accentuated by a lack of scientific knowledge for its sustainable management and valorisation. This study was carried out with the aim of addresing this latter problem. It focuses on the characterization of Tsiperifery which includes different aspects of diversity pertaining to morphology, genetics, biology and ecology. This study involves various complementary methods. The characterization of morphological and genetic diversity uses morphometry of matures samples and analyzes of chloroplast and nuclear DNA. Characterization of biological diversity analyses the variation of the reproductive phenological cycle. Characterization of ecological diversity focuses on the diversity of associated species and the demographic structure. Samples used for these analyzes were collected on 179 adult Tsiperifery vines which are distributed in 5 sites scattered among Tsiperifery natural distriburion areas. The results show that the natural diversity of Tsiperifery corresponds to variations in the main morphological, genetic, phenological and ecological traits. These results provide interesting scientific basis for the sustainable management of Tsiperifery . They outline specific orientations for research and operational recommendations for sustainable management and exploitation of this phytogenetic resource of high economic, social and environmental importance.     Ecological flexibility and conservation of Fleurette’s sportive lemur, Lepilemur fleuretae, in the lowland rainforest of Ampasy, Tsitongambarika Protected Area By Marco Campera Oxford Brookes University Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the award of Doctor of Philosophy May 2018 i Abstract Ecological flexibility entails an expansion of niche breadth in response to different environmental conditions. Sportive lemurs Lepilemur spp. are known to minimise energetic costs via short distances travelled, small home ranges, increased resting time, and low metabolic rates. Very little information, however, is available in the eastern rainforest, the habitat where this genus has its highest diversity. I investigate whether L. fleuretae inhabiting Tsitongambarika (TGK), the southernmost lowland rainforest in Madagascar, shows similar behavioural and ecological adaptations to the sportive lemurs inhabiting dry and deciduous forests. I collected data from July 2015 to July 2016 at Ampasy, northernmost portion of TGK. To understand patterns of resource availability, I collected phenological data on 200 tree species. I explored the ecology of L. fleuretae by gathering data on its diet, ranging patterns, and by reconstructing the activity profiles via a novel method, the unsupervised learning algorithm on accelerometer data. I estimated the anthropogenic pressure in the area and I evaluated whether local management and researchers’ presence had an effect in decreasing it. Lepilemur fleuretae at Ampasy is hyperactive when compared to other species of this genus, with longer distances travelled, larger home ranges, and less time spent resting. The species seems to reduce the competition with the folivorous A. meridionalis by including a higher proportion of fruits and flowers in their diet than other sportive lemurs.

Discospermum, Landia, Lasianthus, lectotype, Mussaenda, Psychotria, Uragoga Introduction In revising various genera of the Rubiaceae for the Flora of Singapore a number of points of taxonomic and nomenclatural note required attention. These are dealt with here. Diplospora DC. versus Discospermum Dalzell Hooker (1880) reduced the genus Discopermum to a section of Diplospora. This synonymisation of the genera was generally accepted until Ali & Robbrecht (1991) resurrected Discospermum. Arriola et al. (2018) have recently confirmed, using molecular techniques, that Diplospora and Discospermum do represent separate lineages in the coffee tribe. The only species of the Coffeeae native to Singapore has been referred to as Diplospora malaccensis Hook.f. in nearly all publications on the flora. Ali & Robbrecht (1991) excluded this species from the Coffeeae, arguing that the orientation of the embryo radicle and details of the seed coat anatomy indicated membership of the tribe Hypobathreae.
