XVII AND HARLEY 55 CONAN DOYLE INTRODUCTION Editorial Procedure Essentially, the following transcript aims to be diplomatic, retaining the spelling, orthography and punctuation of Royal 12 D. xvii where possible. In a small number of instances, text has been restored from other manuscript sources, such as London, British Library Harley 55, and Harley 585. Not all textual parallels between Harley 585 and Royal 12 have been fully examined. Such parallels which could be fruitfully explored are discussed listed in Table 2.2 or volume 1 of this thesis.1 Abbreviations For the sake of convenience, most abbreviations have been expanded, but such expansions are noted in italic type. The tyronian nota denoting ‘and’ is indicated by a numeral ‘7’ except where it directly follows an editorial chapter number where the abbreviation is expanded for the sake of clarity. Punctuation This transcript attempts to represent the manuscript punctuation of the original text, with no attempt at modernization for syntactic sense. The scribe uses three forms of punctuation. The most common is the standard punctus, represented as a full stop in this edition. Two further punctuation marks can be noted. When a sentence ends completely at the end of a line, there is a triple punctus, resembling the modern mathematical sign of implication at the right margin of the written area of the page, while a recipe ending in the middle of a line is noted by a double virgula following the single punctus. As such it must be remembered that the punctus often represents a stop of lower value than the modern full stop, separating items in lists of ingredients, etc. 1 Above, I, 52–3. 1 Rubrication Majuscule characters written in red ink in the manuscript, written over two lines, or otherwise emphasised by the scribe have been presented in bold type in the following transcript. Textual Emendations At times emendations have been made, using three orders of priority. Most importantly, if a parallel Old English witness to a given remedy survives, it may shed light on certain poor readings in MS R. Of secondary consideration are parallel Latin sources, which may shed light on what the initial Old English translator intended, while finally, a very small number of emendations have been made merely on the grounds of sense and grammar. Expanded abbreviations are marked in italic type. Following the conventions of textual criticism, angle brackets < > are used to denote additions to the received text, square brackets [ ] used to denote text marked for deletion. Where Latin text has been quoted from a modern critical edition, such notation is retained. Scribal deletion has been recorded in double square brackets [[ ]]. The symbol † is not part of the critical apparatus, but represents a cruciform scribal notation or symbol used in phylactery charms. Chapter Divisions The principal editorial aim of this transcript has been to present more useful subdivisions of the chapters of the text than those in Cockayne’s edition. The chapters have been subdivided into numbered sections according to the following criteria: Primarily, manuscript layout provides the majority of natural chapter subdivisions, with many recipes starting on a new line, often with a rubricated initial or an enlarged initial to the left of the written margin of the page. A secondary consideration is syntactic. New sentences beginning with a standard recipe formula are given a separate section number. A tertiary consideration has been provided by Latin sources and analogues, partly for the convenience of demonstrating these analogues. Where a single chapter draws from multiple Latin works or chapters of a given Latin work, subsections have been added to denote this. 2 The text at the beginning of each chapter is often duplicated in the following sentence.     Oral Tradition, 14/2 (1999): 401-419 The Inscription of Charms in Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts Lea Olsan Anglo-Saxon charms constitute a definable oral genre that may be distinguished from other kinds of traditionally oral materials such as epic poetry because texts of charms include explicit directions for performance. Scribes often specify that a charm be spoken (cwean) or sung (singan). In some cases a charm is to be written on some object. But inscribing an incantation on an object does not necessarily diminish or contradict the orality of the genre. An incantation written on an amulet manifests the appropriation of the technology of writing for the purposes of a traditionally oral activity.1 Unlike epic poetry, riddles, or lyrics, charms are performed toward specific practical ends and their mode of operation is performative, so that uttering the incantation accomplishes a purpose. The stated purpose of an incantation also determines when and under what circumstances a charm will be performed. Charms inscribed in manuscripts are tagged according to the needs they answer-whether eye pain, insomnia, childbirth, theft of property, or whatever. Some charms ward off troubles (toothache, bees swarming); others, such as those for bleeding or swellings, relieve physical troubles. This specificity of purpose markedly distinguishes the genre from other traditional oral genres that are less specifically utilitarian. Given the specific circumstances of need that call for their performance, the social contexts in which charms are performed create the conditions felicitous for performative speech acts in Austin’s sense (1975:6-7, 12-15). The assumption underlying charms is that the incantations (whether words or symbols or phonetic patterns) of a charm can effect a change in the state of the person or persons or inanimate object (a salve, for example, or a field for crops).

    CHAPTER 1 OLD ENGLISH LITERATURE The Old English language or Anglo-Saxon is the earliest form of English. The period is a long one and it is generally considered that Old English was spoken from about A.D. 600 to about 1100. Many of the poems of the period are pagan, in particular Widsith and Beowulf. The greatest English poem, Beowulf is the first English epic. The author of Beowulf is anonymous. It is a story of a brave young man Beowulf in 3182 lines. In this epic poem, Beowulf sails to Denmark with a band of warriors to save the King of Denmark, Hrothgar. Beowulf saves Danish King Hrothgar from a terrible monster called Grendel. The mother of Grendel who sought vengeance for the death of her son was also killed by Beowulf. Beowulf was rewarded and became King. After a prosperous reign of some forty years, Beowulf slays a dragon but in the fight he himself receives a mortal wound and dies. The poem concludes with the funeral ceremonies in honour of the dead hero. Though the poem Beowulf is little interesting to contemporary readers, it is a very important poem in the Old English period because it gives an interesting picture of the life and practices of old days. The difficulty encountered in reading Old English Literature lies in the fact that the language is very different from that of today. There was no rhyme in Old English poems. Instead they used alliteration. Besides Beowulf, there are many other Old English poems. Widsith, Genesis A, Genesis B, Exodus, The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Wife’s Lament, Husband’s Message, Christ and Satan, Daniel, Andreas, Guthlac, The Dream of the Rood, The Battle of Maldon etc.

This thesis contends that invisible labor refers to labor that is ignored, underpaid, oftentiMes spans across social hierarchies and is socially constructed. The first part of this thesis goes into the conteMporary understanding of invisible labor, how this understanding leads to recognition of invisible labor in Old English literature and shows that this labor is not gender specific. The second part of this thesis goes into peace-weaving as invisible labor, which had been culturally considered women’s work and economically devalued, as depicted by the actions of Wealhtheow when she serves mead and speaks up for her sons in Beowulf and heroic actions of killing Holofernes by Judith in Judith. The third part of this thesis explores peaceMaker as invisible labor, as depicted by Wiglaf serving “water” in Beowulf, Widsith taking Ealhhild to her new king in Widsith, Constantine taking advice from the Angel as depicted in Cynewulf’s Elene, the soldiers standing by King Athelstan and defeating the Scots in “The Battle of Brunburgh,” and the men being faithful to AEthelred against the Vikings in “The Battle of Maldon.” In analyzing invisible labor as depicted in Old English literature, what may be viewed in conteMporary terms as “ordinary” work of service that is easily disMissed and unrecognized, will bring insight into how invisible labor was seen in Old English literature.

While mostly only single book was discussed, like Bonaventura or Stephen Langton does, this commentary covers rather unusually, the entire New Testament. The text betrays great sophistication and it is surely not a mere draft. Many comments are taken from the Homiliae in Evangelia, the Epistolae, and the Regulae pastolaris from Gregorius Magnus, we do not know why the author had a special preference for them. No other version of the text could be found using the usual means. Also Stegmüllers Repertorium biblicum which covers more than 24.000 commentaries in 1 MANUSCRIPTS BEFORE 1600 manuscripts gives no hints on the commentaries present in this manuscripts. It is extremely rare to find a corpus of not registered commentaries .

    humanities Article The Composite Nature of Andreas David Maddock Department of Language and Literature, Signum University, Nashua, NH 03063, USA; [email protected] Received: 7 May 2019; Accepted: 20 July 2019; Published: 31 July 2019 Abstract: Scholars of the Old English poem Andreas have long debated its dating and authorship, as the poem shares affinities both with Beowulf and the signed poems of Cynewulf. Although this debate hinges on poetic style and other internal evidence, the stylistic uniformity of Andreas has not been suitably demonstrated. This paper investigates this question by examining the distribution of oral-formulaic data within the poem, which is then correlated to word frequency and orthographic profiles generated with lexomic techniques. The analysis identifies an earlier version of the poem, which has been expanded by a later poet. Introduction Cynewulf has received scrutiny as one of the few named poets in the Anglo-Saxon vernacular due to the existence of four poems—Elene, Juliana, Christ II, and The Fates of the Apostles—that contain rune signatures bearing his name. The modern expectation is for an author to sign his work, but because manuscript collections of Anglo-Saxon poetry appear to have been intended for local audiences this was not the norm in medieval England (Bredehoft 2009, p. 45). Cynewulf signed these poems to solicit prayers on his behalf, not due to an expectation of publication (p. 46). Due to the anonymous nature of the Old English poetic corpus, unsigned poems authored by Cynewulf may exist, but because we know so little about his biography, “the whole question of Cynewulf’s authorship is intimately tied up with the issue of style” (Orchard 2003, p.
