Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book. Dedicated to the men and women of the USAF past, present, and future, it records significant events and achievements from 18 September 1947 through 9 April 1997. Since its establishment, the USAF has played a significant role in the events that have shaped modem history. Initially, the reassuring drone of USAF transports announced the aerial lifeline that broke the Berlin blockade, the Cold War’s first test of wills. In the tense decades that followed, the USAF deployed a strategic force of nuclear- capable intercontinental bombers and missiles that deterred open armed conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. During the Cold War’s deadly flash points, USAF jets roared through the skies of Korea and Southeast Asia, wresting air superiority from their communist opponents and bringing air power to the support of friendly ground forces. In the great global competition for the hearts and minds of the Third World, hundreds of USAF humanitarian missions relieved victims of war, famine, and natural disaster. The Air Force performed similar disaster relief services on the home front. Over Grenada, Panama, and Libya, the USAF participated in key contingency actions that presaged post-Cold War operations. In the aftermath of the Cold War the USAF became deeply involved in constructing a new world order. As the Soviet Union disintegrated, USAF flights succored the populations of the newly independent states.

SITC News Analysis 1 SITC Bulletin Analysis March 2013 Competition and Cooperation The Story Behind the Y-20 Maiden Flight Hanlu LU Research Analyst UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation The successful maiden flight of China’s heavy lift military transportation aircraft Y-20 at Shaanxi Yanliang Aviation Base (陕西阎良航空基地) has drawn worldwide attention to the Chinese aviation industry. The speedy process of the design and manufacturing capabilities shown in the Y-20 project also raises the question of foreign technological support. While lack of competition has been one of the biggest problems faced by the state monopolized industries, in the Y-20 case, competition existed throughout the planning period, and later regional cooperation was organized to accomplish the project’s goals. This analysis looks at the main players in the Y-20 project and the details of the developmental process. Competition in China’s Aviation Industry China’s aviation industry is monopolized and centralized. Almost all aircraft design, test, and manufacturing units are subsidiaries of or affiliated with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). Born in the era of the planned economy, the industry has also been divided regionally with each company having its own model, special- izations, and growth. Although no competition exists at the national level, competition is commonly seen among AVIC’s subsidiaries at the regional level when it comes to a large project, which can bring intensive funding and enormous attention. For example, the C919 large passenger aircraft project led to such serious competition between regions that even provincial governments joined in the lobbying efforts.1 Competition also reportedly exists be- tween Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute (成都飞机设计研究所) and Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute (沈阳飞机设计研究所), which resulted in the launch of the Shenyang J-31, a seeming competitor of the J-20 stealth fighter created by Chengdu.
