Whittington Determination of Late Postclassic Kaqchikel Maya Diet, Disease, and Cause of Death through Analysis of Skeletons from Iximché, Guatemala Research Year : 1995 Culture : Maya Chronology : Late Postclassic Location : Guatemala Site : Iximché Table of Contents Introduction Fieldwork Analysis List of Figures Sources Cited Introduction Iximché was the capital of the Kaqchikel realm, founded by refugees from the Quiché kingdom in the 1470s or 1480s ( Figure 1 ). The Quiché attacked and tried to conquer the city at least once. This attempt met with failure and the Kaqchikel captured many Quiché warriors. Spaniards under Pedro de Alvarado arrived in the highlands in 1524. With the Kaqchikel as allies, they conquered the Guatemalan polities which had been enemies of Iximché. On July 25, Alvarado founded the first colonial capital of Guatemala near Iximché. This action led to the outbreak of hostilities between the Kaqchikel and the Spanish and the ultimate destruction and abandonment of Iximché in 1526. George Guillemin, a Swiss archaeologist, excavated Iximché between the late 1950s and the early 1970s. His main interest was architecture, and his crews uncovered large expanses of the site, exposing and then restoring plazas, palaces, altars, and temples. Unfortunately, Guillemin was much less interested in analyzing the large amounts of materials that came from the digging. His excavation notes, archived at the Centro de Investigaciones Regionales de Mesoamerica (CIRMA) in Antigua, do not mention the location, associated artifacts, or basic layout of some complete skeletons. Even worse, for years the excavated materials were stored in what was essentially a chicken coop. Bags broke open, artifacts and bones from various contexts became mixed together, and tags with provenience information rotted away or became separated from their bags. -

SURFACES AND BEYOND: THE POLITICAL, IDEOLOGICAL, AND ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF ANCIENT MAYA IRON-ORE MIRRORS A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Copyright by Marc Gordon Blainey Anthropology M.A. Program June 2007 ABSTRACT Surfaces and Beyond: The Political, Ideological, and Economic Significance of Ancient Maya Iron-ore Mirrors Marc Gordon Blainey This thesis examines archaeological evidence pertaining to composite lithic artifacts of the ancient Maya termed “mirrors.” These objects, typically consisting of flat, shiny iron-ore fragments fitted in a mosaic to a backing of stone, ceramic, or wood, are assessed concerning their political, ideological, and economic implications within ancient Maya society. The evidence, including detailed archaeological proveniences and instances of mirrors in iconography, epigraphy, and ethnohistory, is considered from the theoretical standpoints of cognitive archaeology, from the perspectives of shamanism, and a renewed conjunctive approach. Endeavouring to reveal the emic significance mirrors held for the ancient Maya who made and used them, the role of these mirrors is situated within the broader ideological framework of a reflective surface complex. Although prior interpretations are largely correct in designating mirrors as implements for “divinatory scrying,” it is concluded that the evidence allows for a much more refined elucidation than has heretofore been provided. We know a good deal about the events that led to the conquest of Yucatan by these foreigners, and the subsequent replacement of their state by a resurgent but already decadent Maya culture, for we have entered into a kind of history, albeit far more shaky than that which was recorded on the monuments of the Classic Period. The traditional annals of the peoples of Yucatan, and also of the Guatemalan highlanders, transcribed into Spanish letters early in Colonial times, apparently reach back as far as the beginning of the Postclassic era and are very important sources. But such annals should be used with much caution, whether they come to us from Bishop Landa himself, from statements made by the native nobility, or from native lawsuits and land claims. These are often confused and often self-contradictory, not least because native lineages seem to have deliberately falsified their own histories for political reasons. Our richest (and most treacherous) sources are the K’atun Prophecies of Yucatan, contained in the “Books of Chilam Balam,” which derive their name from a Maya savant said to have predicted the arrival of the Spaniards from the east. -

Glyph Dwellers Report 57 September 2017 A New Teotiwa Lord of the South: K’ahk’ Uti’ Chan Yopat (578-628 C.E.) and the Renaissance of Copan Péter Bíró Independent Scholar Classic Maya inscriptions recorded political discourse commissioned by title-holding elite, typically rulers of a given city. The subject of the inscriptions was manifold, but most of them described various period- ending ceremonies connected to the passage of time. Within this general framework, statements contained information about the most culturally significant life-events of their commissioners. This information was organized according to discursive norms involving the application of literary devices such as parallel structures, difrasismos, ellipsis, etc. Each center had its own variations and preferences in applying such norms, which changed during the six centuries of Classic Maya civilization. Epigraphers have thus far rarely investigated Classic Maya political discourse in general and its regional-, site-, and period-specific features in particular. It is possible to posit very general variations, for example the presence or absence of secondary elite inscriptions, which makes the Western Maya region different from other areas of the Maya Lowlands (Bíró 2011). There are many other discursive differences not yet thoroughly investigated. It is still debated whether these regional (and according to some) temporal discursive differences related to social phenomena or whether they strictly express literary variation (see Zender 2004). The resolution of this question has several implications for historical solutions such as the collapse of Classic Maya civilization or the hypothesis of status rivalry, war, and the role of the secondary elite. There are indications of ruler-specific textual strategies when inscriptions are relatively uniform; that is, they contain the same information, and their organization is similar. -

En realidad, la exposición está concebida como un paseo a través de las intervenciones a las que fueron sometidos sus edificios principales a lo largo de estos últimos cien años. Para ello, hubo que recurrir a las excelentes fotografías tomadas por los incansables exploradores y viajeros del siglo XIX, los primeros que dieron a conocer los vestigios de una ciudad que había permanecido más de mil años sepultada por la selva. Nos referimos a las célebres imágenes captadas por A. Maudslay y T. Maler a finales del siglo pasado, cuyas placas de vidrio originales se conservan en el Museo Británico y en el Museo Peabody de la Universidad de Harvard, respectivamente, No es nuestra intención relatar ahora cómo se llevaron a cabo tales trabajos -información contenida en los paneles explicativos de la muestra- pero sí nos gustaría realizar una pequeña reflexión acerca del impacto que tuvo en la arquitectura de Tikal todo este cúmulo de actuaciones. 1 2 Chwa Nima Ab’aj ( Mixco Viejo) “Recordación Florida”, o, “Historia del Reyno de Goathemala”, es una obra escrita por el Capitán Francisco Fuentes y Guzmán en 1690, o sea unos 165 años después de que fuerzas invasoras españolas ocuparan el territorio de la actual Guatemala. A Fuentes y Guzmán se le considera el primer historiador criollo guatemalteco, ya que en esta obra narra lo que se acredita como la primera historia general del país. Por los cargos ocupados: Cronista de Ciudad nombrado por el Rey, Regidor Perpetuo del Ayuntamiento y Alcalde Mayor tuvo acceso a numerosos documentos (muchos desaparecidos) que le permitió hacer esa monumental obra. Hoy día, con la aparición de otros antiguos documentos con narraciones tanto de indígenas, como de españoles y mestizos, algunos de los datos y hechos consignados en la famosa “Recordación Florida” han sido refutados, negados o impugnados, sin que por esos casos se ponga en cuestión la trascendencia de la obra del “Cronista de la Ciudad”. Esta obra es de capital importancia pues en ella se consigna por vez primera la existencia de Mixco, (Chwa Nima Ab’aj) así como los sucesos acaecidos en la batalla que finalizó con su destrucción por parte de los españoles. Sin embargo, a pesar de la autenticidad narrativa de Fuentes y Guzmán sobre la batalla librada para ocupar Mixco, el nombre que le dio a esta inigualable ciudadela ceremonial, así como los datos sobre la etnia indígena que la habitaba y defendió ante la invasión española, los Pokomames, han sido impugnados sobre la base de estudios antropológicos, arqueológicos y documentos indígenas escritos recién terminada la conquista. -

Alive and Well in the Early Postclassic
17 LAMANAI RELOADED: ALIVE AND WELL IN THE EARLY POSTCLASSIC Elizabeth A. Graham David M. Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum directed investigations at Lamanai from 1974 to 1986. The site was mapped, and excavations focused on a wide range of residential and monumental structures. A second phase of excavations was initiated in 1998, directed by Elizabeth Graham, which is aimed at clarifying periods of transition that are little known at other sites, but well represented at Lamanai. These are: the transition from the Late Preclassic period to the beginning of Maya florescence in Classic times (400 B.C. to A.D. 250); the time of the Maya collapse, from about A.D. 800 to 1000; and the transition from Precolumbian occupation to the Spanish Colonial period (1450 to 1700). This contribution presents a summary of recent investigations at the site, with special attention given to the buildings surrounding Plaza N10 [3], also known as the Ottawa Group. Emery Published online: 10 October 2008 # Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2008 Abstract Ethnoarchaeological research at highland Maya hunting shrines docu- ments the material remains of interactions between two types of animate beings: humans and the forest. When either active agent enters the others’ domain there are accompanying ceremonial activities to assuage the inherent danger, often leaving physical traces in the material record. These traces, if found in the archaeological record, might reveal similar ancient interactions. Using the material correlates of modern hunting rituals, we explore the utility of ethnoarchaeological research in identifying negotiations with non-human agents associated with the animate forest – an active agent in many societies. Zooarchaeology Introduction Ethnoarchaeology, the study of modern material remains as analogs for ancient activities, can provide valuable data for inferring agency from the archaeological record. This is particularly true in the case of animistic religious practices, where one or more actors are non-physical entities or material objects not afforded agency in our own culture but active participants in other societies. In the pursuit of evidence for interactions between human and non-human agents, the material remains of repeated ceremonial negotiations are valuable. As these negotiations often occur at the boundaries between agent realms, they physically mark important thresholds where human and non-human actors interact. L. A.
