TwoMorrows is proud to debut our newest magazine, COMIC BOOK CREATOR , devoted to the work and careers of the men and women who draw, write, edit, and publish comics, focusing always on the artists and not the artifacts, the creators and not the characters. Behind an ALEX ROSS cover painting, our frantic FIRST ISSUE features an investiga - tion of the oft despicable treatment JACK KIRBY endured from the very business he helped establish. From being cheated out of royalties in the ‘40s and bullied in the ‘80s by the publisher he made great, to his estate’s current fight for equitable recognition against an entertainment monolith where his characters have generated billions of dollars, we present Kirby’s cautionary tale in the eternal struggle for creator’s rights. Plus, CBC #1 interviews artist ALEX ROSS and writer KURT BUSIEK , spotlights the last years of writer/artist FRANK ROBBINS , remembers comics historian LES DANIELS , talks to TODD McFARLANE about his new show-all book, showcases a joint talk between NEAL ADAMS and DENNIS O’NEIL on their unforgettable collaborations, as well as throws a whole kit’n’caboodle of other creator-centric items atcha! • Representing Heroes, Villains and Anti- Heroes in Comics and Graphic
H-Film CFP: Who’s Bad? Representing Heroes, Villains and Anti- Heroes in Comics and Graphic Narratives – A seminar sponsored by the ICLA Research Committee on Comic Studies and Graphic Narratives Discussion published by Angelo Piepoli on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 This is a Call for Papers for a proposed seminar to be held as part of the American Comparative Literature Association's 2017 Annual Meeting. It will take place at Utrecht University in Utrecht, the Netherlands on July 6-9, 2017. Submitters are required to get a free account on the ACLA's website at http://www.acla.org/user/register . Abstracts are limited to 1500 characters, including spaces. If you wish to submit an astract, visit http://www.acla.org/node/12223 . The deadline for paper submission is September 23, 2016. Since the publication of La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortuna y adversidades in 1554, the figure of the anti-hero, which had originated in Homeric literature, has had great literary fortune over the centuries. Satan as the personification of evil, then, was the most interesting character in Paradise Lost by John Milton and initiated a long series of fascinating literary villains. It is interesting to notice that, in a large part of the narratives of these troubled times we are living in, the protagonist of the story is everything but a hero and the most acclaimed characters cross the moral borders quite frequently. This is a fairly common phenomenon in literature as much as in comics and graphic narratives. The advent of the Modern Age of Comic Books in the U.S.

Mgr. et Mgr. Jana Kasparova; University of West Bohemia, Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, Dept. of English Lang. and Lit. The Art of Storytelling: A Peek Into the Graphic Literary World Literary world has never been only black and white. The characters we love to read about have never been only good and bad. Let us peek into the world where graphics and colours play as important role as the words and letters written on the page. Let us explore the world of contemporary comic books and graphic novels, learn about their characteristics and specifics and meet the authors who are considered to be the superheroes of this rediscovered literary genre. Someone might think that comics and graphic novels are just for children and young adults. But that would be a mistake! Look at a few examples of graphic novels which may blow your mind and teach you about real world! Graphic novel VERSUS Comic Book Before talking about particular representatives of contemporary graphic literature, learn a bit about the basics of the genre. Do you know the terminology? Can you define the following terms, pointing at possible differences between them? comic book - graphic novel - A brief historical overview combination of words and pictures stretches back into antiquity (ancient Egyptian wall paintings) current vocabulary shaped with the rise of the comic strip popularized in newspapers at the start of the 20th century introduction of the fundamentals of the comics language — (balloons, panel to panel narrative progression) Winsor McCay, George Herriman, E.C.

This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57).
