The marriage was celebrated.” George Sphrantzes, Chronicle.1 1 SPHRANTZES, George. The Fall of the Byzantine Empire: A Chronicle by George Sphrantzes, 1401-1477. Translated by Marios Philippides. Serbian Byzantine Society https://serbianbyzantine.wordpress.com/ The last Serbian queen: Helena Palaiologina (1431-1473) 2 This was not the first time a Byzantine married a Serbian. On February 7, 1392, the young lady Jelena Dragaš arrived in Constantinople, the bride-to-be of Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos (1391-1425). A grand-niece of the great Serbian Emperor Stefan Dušan, and daughter of one of the last great lords of the remnants of the Serbian Empire in Central Greece, she would be the last empress-mother of Byzantium, and the mother of the last Palaeologi.2 Her granddaughter, following her example, would become the last Despoina of Serbia.3 Helena’s father, Thomas, was the youngest son of Manuel II Palaiologos and the last Byzantine Despot to rule over the Morea, as well as a fierce advocate of the Union between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, which he considered was the path for the ultimate salvation of Byzantium. Her mother, Aikaterine Asanina- Zaccaria, was the daughter of the last ruler of Latin Achaea, Centurione Zaccaria, vassal of Ladislas d’Anjou-Durazzo, King of Naples and lord of what remained of Frankish Morea.4 Serbo-Byzantine marriages had occurred many times in the past years, when the Empire was still vast and powerful.

DATE OF APPROVAL: 10.08.2009 i © Mehmet Kuru, 2009 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT RELATIONS BETWEEN OTTOMAN CORSAIRS AND THE IMPERIAL NAVY IN THE 16th CENTURY Mehmet Kuru History, M.A. Thesis, Spring 2009 Thesis Supervisor: Y. Hakan Erdem This thesis endeavors to present an analysis of the nature of the relations between ottoman corsairs and the imperial navy in the 16th century. Recruitment of corsairs as naval officers by Ottoman central authority to make up for the insufficient numbers of skilled seamen was presented as a fact in various works. However, there is no study to explain construction period of this relationship and to define the system. This thesis aims to construct a model to explicate this relationship. As of the mid-fifteenth century, Ottoman seapower started to strengthen and Empire conquered several crucial harbors and islands in Black sea and Mediterranean until the end of this century. Ottoman Imperial navy gained a strong infrastructure thanks to these conquests. Apart from Imperial navy, Ottoman corsairs' attacks that were based on these harbors increased and they strengthened gradually. In 1495, an old corsair, Kemal Reis was taken into Ottoman service, thus he became a pioneer for the recruitment of corsairs to Imperial Navy.

Dana 1. maja 1463. godine u velikoj sali Rektorove palate u Dubrovniku sklopqen je brak izme|u Milice Brankovi}, k}erke po~iv{eg srpskog despota Lazara (1456–1458), i Leonarda III Toko (1448–1479), latinskog despota jon- skih ostrva.1 Narativna dela, nastala nekoliko decenija nakon ovoga doga|aja, od stra- ne osoba koje su prostorno i donekle li~no bile bliske supru`nicima,2 opi- 1 Informativno o vladavini Leonarda III Toko (1449–1479), W. Thanks must first be given to my supervisor, Hugh Willmott, for allowing me this amazing research opportunity, and for putting up with my general lack of knowledge. Thanks must also be given to Phil McCluskey, who very kindly continued to support my research even after his time at Sheffield came to an end. Thanks also to the University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities for the scholarship which made this possible. Thank you to the many museums who granted me access to their collections: Muzej grada Trogira, especially Lujana Paraman; the Arheološka zbirka Osor – Lošinjski muzej, particularly Jasminka Ćus-Rukonić; Marina Lambasa, Emil Podrug, and the Muzej grada Šibenika; Radmila Biondić and Marina Kovač at the Muzej Slavonije; Igor Mihajlović at the Hrvatski restauratorski zavod; Dr Vesna Bikić at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade; and Ðivo Bašić at Pomorski Muzej, Dubrovački Muzeji. Thank you also to Ilir Parangoni for showing me some of the glass finds from Butrint, and to Nikolina Topić, Margherita Ferri, and Luka Bekić for sharing their research with me.
