I was very pleased once again to see so many people show up for the meeting this month at Boston Pizza. It seems to be working well so far and I hope we can continue to have the same numbers each month.

Once again the winter has flown by and the new season will be here in a few weeks. If you are like me, none of those so-called Winter projects ever did get done. And I don’t even have the excuse that I went ice racing! I know that several of you did go though and that you had a lot of fun. Wish I could make it to some of the ice races – maybe next year. The Enduro in Seattle is coming up in the next couple of weeks – hope it is not too cold for all of you. Roger and I will be in Laguna Seca at the A1GP event there – hope it is warm and sunny there, but you never can tell. We have been there before and wished we had warm clothes.

Thanks to SCCBC for confirming that the lunches will again be provided for all the volunteers this season. It is very much appreciated by everyone. See you at the track in a few weeks!

Ann

Driver Training March 18/19 SCCBC would like us there Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday Please arrive at the track on Saturday around 11:00am Also if you could let Dave or Irene know if you will be able to help out I’m sure they would appreciate it. [email protected] or [email protected]

Northwest Endurance Series – Four Hour Enduro , Seattle, Wa March 12, 2006 The countdown continues and we are closing in on only 2 weeks remaining until the race. The race team entries are continuing to come in and we are hoping to have nearly 40 cars entered by race day. Jon Holt, a Conference driver, and a local chef and restaurant owner will be preparing our Salmon BBQ dinner immediately following the race. The BBQ this year will be free for all drivers and for all volunteer/workers. All others (crew members, family, spectators and friends) will be asked to pay just $10 to help offset the food costs. Drivers and volunteer/workers will be given a BBQ ticket at driver's registration or at the workers meeting. All other tickets can be purchased at the BBQ immediately following the race. The food preparation work is being donated by Jon and his food crew. MX-5 Cup Completes Schedule With Portland and Trois-Rivieres

TOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 24, 2006) -- SCCA Pro Racing announced today that the inaugural season of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook will include rounds at Portland International Raceway and Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. The two new races bring the total season schedule to eight events for 2006.

"We're very excited to announce these two very different, yet equally historic, venues to the inaugural season of MX-5 Cup racing," SCCA Pro Racing President Earl Knoper said. "Adding a race in conjunction with the popular at Portland and an event with the atmosphere of Trois-Rivieres are wonderful additions to the schedule."

The series, which features identically outfitted, convertible 2006 Mazda MX-5 sports cars racing on Hankook Tires, joins American Le Mans July 20-22 for the Portland Grand Prix weekend for Round Five of its eight-race Championship. Two weeks later, Aug. 4-6, it will join the STAR Mazda and Grand American Cup series on the streets of Trois-Rivieres for the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres for Round Six.

"These two races fit nicely into the cadence of the schedule and fill a mid-summer void from our initially- announced six races," Knoper said.

The 2006 SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by Hankook begins its season May 5-7 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in conjunction with the Grand American Rolex series. It will run an eight-race schedule in conjunction with American Le Mans, CASCAR, Champ Car, Grand American and Mazda's open-wheel developmental series, STAR Mazda.

Meanwhile, closer to home... As you drive into Pacific Raceways this year, you’ll notice a huge construction project going on to your right as you drive to the “T” that directs you towards the paddock area. It’s a huge project, all right. But really it is just the tip of the iceberg. And that iceberg may go deeper than you can imagine. Hang onto your hat. The new facility will be a 4,000-foot sunken track for shifter karts. The topography will be lowered by about 25’ to accommodate the new facility. Good for them, you may be thinking, but how does that affect me and my vintage racecar? Plenty. The process that Jason Fiorito and company went through to get the Shifter Kart Track built may mean that we will have a world-class club racing facility—at least—very soon. Huh? Well, here is how it works. And folks, this is no pipe dream; it’s already happening. The best way for Pacific Raceways to mitigate the noise that will be created by the Karts was to build the track into the ground. That process meant that a massive amount of gravel was unearthed. This gravel is premium grade construction quality, and it was snapped up immediately by developers who are already begging for more. And there’s plenty more out there—Jason estimates that only 20-30% of the gravel at the facility has been unearthed. The revenue generated from the gravel sale will finance a great new grandstand complex that will be built for this season along the drag strip side of the straightaway (our present grandstands next to the pits will remain in place). An everybody-wins situation has been created. Our road course and the drag strip can be lowered—with no real change in configuration—and revenue will be generated from the resulting gravel sales. This will result in better facilities and a safer course for all of us. But that may be just the beginning. Why stop there? Why not build the much-discussed NASCAR track right at Pacific Raceways? It could be sunk into the ground and side-of-the-hill grandstand seating put in. It can be done for a fraction of the $345 million price tag needed for the Kitsap NASCAR track, for instance. Wow, that is quite a bit to bite off, but it all works on paper. At least, the Fiorito family is motivated to greatly improve the track and generate revenue from the resulting gravel dislocation. The result is a steady revenue stream that will be used for track improvement. The neighbors are happy because the sunken track will mean greatly reduced noise levels. It all sounds great, but of course there may be slips along the way. But Jason Fiorito is both confident and starry-eyed. “We have a master track permit ready to go to the county in a few months. At least, I am sure that we will create the finest club racing facility in the world.” You know what, with the incentive to build more and make more money, they might just pull it off. It’s the most exciting news since the first pavement was laid down at the facility in 1960.
