Top 40 Best Comedy Films of the Decade GAMES CATEGORIES SUNDAY DEC 18 HOME VIDEOS JOKES GAMES PICTURES TOPS FUNNY STUFF WALLPAPERS BLOG CONTACT FOLLOW US ON ... Top 40 Best Comedy Films of the Decade GAMES CATEGORIES Tops - Tops Action Games ( 52 Though I grew up in the 80s, and my first movie memories are from that decade it wasn't until the 90s that I started ) to earn my own money, and attend the movies on a regular basis. It also wasn't until that decade that I was finally old enough to attend movies that were rated R, and once I crossed that barrier movie viewing got a whole lot more interesting. Many of the movies Adventure of this list of the top 40 best comedy movies of the 90s earned that restricted rating, and though Bill Cosby might disagree games ( 44 those movies in many cases seem to elicit more laughter than their more family-friendly brethren. ) RSS feed abonate That's not to say there are a fair number of family friendly movies on the list. A film doesn't have to be filled with profanity or crude Card & sex jokes to get laughs. However, if it doesn't rely on those cheap and easy laughs the writing has to be top notch to get increasingly Board desensitized audiences laughing. games ( 19 ) RESOURCES When I made this list I tried to strike a balance of raunchy comedy and good clean laughs. Please feel free to let loose in comments and let me know if I've succeeded. Here are my picks for the funniest movies of the 90s. Cars Games ( 32 ) Funny Videos 40 - Four Weddings and a Funeral - Though romantic comedies are far from my favorite brand of movie I have to admit that as far as "chick flicks" go this Hugh Grant / Andie MacDowell collaboration isn't bad. With witty dialogue throughout and some dark Celebrity Invite/Recommend humor this film manages to keep guys and girls alike entertained throughout. Games ( 15 Website directory ) 39 - Rush Hour - Though Jackie Chan's best comedy work came in the western movie Shanghai Noon, co-starring Owen Wilson, he Horoscope also had some pretty good chemistry with the abrasive comedian Chris Tucker. A hybrid action/comedy film Rush Hour has Dress up something to satisfy both types of movie fans. Rush Hour also turned out to be a great commercial success, spawning two sequels, games ( 22 Links and turning Jackie Chan into an international comedy star. ) Funny ringtones 38 - Chasing Amy - Director Kevin Smith burst on the scene back in 1994 with the low budget, black and white cult comedy classic Fighting Sitemap Clerks. Smith quickly proved he was no one hit wonder, reeling off several more comedies in the 90s. As with all Kevin Smith movies Games ( 17 the dialogue is absolutely hilarious, and though this movie might seem a bit mainstream compared to Smith's other works it is still ) Link exchange very far from the usual Hollywood romantic comedy. Pinball Sports & Recreation 37 - Billy Madison - As soon as you see Adam Sandler's name attached to a 90s comedy movie you can be pretty sure you're games ( 18 ) Music Stars probably not going to be very intellectually stimulated. However, the beauty of a comedy movie is that it doesn't have to make you think; it just needs to make you laugh. Sure Billy Madison has more than its fair share of dumb humor, but you can't help but laugh Puzzle Holyegg at the goofball humor and the ludicrous plot. Not Sandler's best work, but good enough to squeak onto this list. games ( 26 Funny Videos ) 36 - Liar Liar - There was arguably no bigger comedy star in the 90s than Canadian funnyman Jim Carrey. Though his recent work has been more subdued, and he has even taken some dramatic turns, back in the prime of his popularity he was an over-the-top Anything Hollywood Sports outrageous ham who could get even the most jaded viewer to burst out in laughter. In this film Carrey is perfectly cast as a lawyer games ( 35 Funny Pictures Blog who is cursed (or blessed) by the sudden inability to tell a lie. Carrey finds himself spilling his guts in all sorts of awkward situations ) (one particularly amusing scene takes place in an elevator). Not only is it funny, but Liar Liar manages to be a little touching as well, Funny Stars and even manages to slip a life lesson in there somewhere. One of Carrey's most underrated films in my opinion. Strategy Funny Pranks games ( 20 35 - The Nutty Professor - I'm normally not a fan of remakes of classic movies, but this one was so different from the original as ) Funny Pictures to seem like a completely different movies. One of the biggest comedy stars of the 80s Eddie Murphy had been in a career slump until he landed this role as Sherman Klump (and about 10 other people). Again, not much intellectual comedy here, but plenty of Zuma Stupid Funny Pics cheap laughs to be had. Games ( 18 Funny Pics ) 34 - Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion - Like blonde jokes? Love the 80s? Then Romy and Michelle's High School Demotivational Posters Reunion should be right up your alley. It is a bit of a talent mismatch with Oscar winner Mia Sorvino pairing up with Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe from Friends) in the lead roles. Still, the two manage to generate pretty good chemistry together. Facebook Covers 33 - The Birdcage - This is a film that always seems to get overlooked on these lists, so I wanted to give it the kudos it deserves. Extreme Videos Robin Williams and Nathan Lane star, so you know right off the bat the comedy will be outrageous and flamboyant. As Armand (gay cabaret owner) and Albert (his drag queen lover) they certainly deliver on both parts. Gene Hackman is equally good as a straight-laced senator whose daughter is engaged to Armand and Albert's son. At their son's request Albert and Armand must put up a front as a normal, conservative family. Not an easy task to say the least. 32 - Men in Black - This is another movie I never see on lists of best comedy movies. Whether it is simply overlooked or the authors simply don't find it funny I don't know. Personally I think it is a fantastic blend of sci-fi and comedy. Will Smith is great in his role as N.Y.P.D. police officer turned interstellar agent Jay, but it is straight man Tommy Lee Jones as Kay who really steals the show. This one is definitely worth another viewing if you haven't seen it in the last decade or so. 31 - City Slickers - Any guys out there currently in the midst of a midlife crisis? Then this is the movie for you. Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Bruno Kirby all star as three city boys who decide to shake up life a little by taking part in a real life cattle drive. Crystal's sarcastic character Mitch Robbins immediately finds an enemy in ranch hand Curly Washburn, played to perfection by Jack Palance, and the funniest parts of the movie revolve around the conflict between the two. 30 - Hot Shots! - This isn't a film that will appeal to everyone reading this list. However, if you like parody films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun then you will no doubt appreciate this spoof of Tom Cruise's 80s hit film Top Gun. Charlie Sheen shows he had talent for comedy long before his hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, starring in the lead role as Topper Harley, a pilot with a haunted past who must get back into the cockpit to save the day. Sheen's Two and a Half Men co-star Jon Cryer also appears in the film, along with Cary Elwes, Valeria Golino, and the always brilliant Lloyd Bridges, who steals many scenes in the film. 29 - Tommy Boy - Saturday night live alum David Spade and the late Chris Farley team up in this side-splitting comedy about a goof-off son who must grow up in a hurry in order to save the family auto business. Farley once again delivers his signature boisterous but charming, physical brand of comedy, and Spade as always shows his talent for delivering sarcastic quips. Though most of Farley's film career was pretty forgettable compared to his SNL skits, this film is definitely the exception. JOKES CATEGORIES 28 - My Cousin Vinny - Not many of the films on this list of the funniest movies of the 90s can boast an Oscar nomination, let alone a win, but this 1992 movie bucks that trend. Marissa Tomei, who was recently so good in The Wrestler landed a Best Animal jokes Supporting Actress statue for her work on the film. Joe Pesci is hilarious as Vinny, an inexperienced lawyer who comes to the rescue Blonde jokes of a pair of his family members who've been mistakenly accused of murder and now face the death penalty. Vinny's methods are unorthodox to say the least, but he gets the job done. College Jokes 27 - Jerry Maguire - Though the signature line from this movie has been absolutely beaten to death in popular culture in the Computer jokes intervening years since its release it is hard to deny the popularity and the impact of this film when it was first released. This one, like My Cousin Vinny also landed an Oscar, with Cuba Gooding Jr. getting the nod as Best Supporting Actor.

Article Title ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Author Details: Dr Holly Chard [email protected] Biography: Holly Chard is Lecturer in Contemporary Screen Media at the University of Brighton. Her research focuses on the U.S. media industries in the 1980s and 1990s. Her recent and forthcoming publications include: a chapter on Macaulay Culkin’s career as a child star, a monograph focusing on the work of John Hughes and a co- authored journal article on Hulk Hogan’s family films. Acknowledgements: The author would like to thank Frank Krutnik and Kathleen Loock for their invaluable feedback on this article and Daniel Chard for assistance with proofreading. 1 ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Keywords: seriality, Hollywood, comedy, family film Abstract: This article explores serial production strategies and textual seriality in Hollywood cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Focusing on John Hughes’ ‘high concept’ family comedies, it examines how Hughes exploited the commercial opportunities offered by serial approaches to both production and film narrative. First, I consider why Hughes’ production set-up enabled him to standardize his movies and respond quickly to audience demand. My analysis then explores how the Home Alone films (1990-1997), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Baby’s Day Out (1994) balanced demands for textual repetition and novelty. Article: Described by the New York Times as ‘the most prolific independent filmmaker in Hollywood history’, John Hughes created and oversaw a vast number of movies in the 1980s and 1990s.1 In a period of roughly fourteen years, from the release of National Lampoon’s Vacation (Ramis, 1983) to the release of Home Alone 3 (Gosnell, 1997), Hughes received screenwriting credits on twenty-seven screenplays, of which he produced eighteen, directed eight and executive produced two.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresent ed in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention. • Post-Cinematic Affect: on Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales
Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Post-Cinematic Affect: On Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales Steven Shaviro Wayne State University Introduction In this text, I look at three recent media productions – two films and a music video – that reflect, in particularly radical and cogent ways, upon the world we live in today. Olivier Assayas’ Boarding Gate (starring Asia Argento) and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales (with Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar) were both released in 2007. Nick Hooker’s music video for Grace Jones’s song ‘Corporate Cannibal’ was released (as was the song itself) in 2008. These works are quite different from one another, in form as well as content. ‘Corporate Cannibal’ is a digital production that has little in common with traditional film. Boarding Gate, on the other hand, is not a digital work; it is thoroughly cinematic, in terms both of technology, and of narrative development and character presentation. Southland Tales lies somewhat in between the other two. It is grounded in the formal techniques of television, video, and digital media, rather than those of film; but its grand ambitions are very much those of a big-screen movie. Nonetheless, despite their evident differences, all three of these works express, and exemplify, the ‘structure of feeling’ that I would like to call (for want of a better phrase) post-cinematic affect. Film-Philosophy | ISSN: 1466-4615 1 Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Why ‘post-cinematic’? Film gave way to television as a ‘cultural dominant’ a long time ago, in the mid-twentieth century; and television in turn has given way in recent years to computer- and network-based, and digitally generated, ‘new media.’ Film itself has not disappeared, of course; but filmmaking has been transformed, over the past two decades, from an analogue process to a heavily digitised one.
