A simple example from a childhood song: Jesus loves me, this I know Epistemology asks the question, "how do you know this?" The answer is, For the Bible tells me so. The Roman Catholic apologist (RCA) comes along and says, "Aha - how do you really know the Bible says that? Some Protestants believe that Jesus loves everyone and some believe that he only loves the elect. How do you know who is right? We Catholics have an infallible interpreter to tell us the true meaning of the Bible." And so now we have, Jesus loves me, this I know For the Roman Catholic Magisterium tells me so. The typical RC approach to argue against evangelicals is to use the "how do you know" line of reasoning. This is to show the person that he needs an infallible interpreter to have any certainty about truth. Yet, the RC is himself guilty of epistemological fallacies of the most fundamental nature. This will be demonstrated in the rest of the book . I. 1 DEI VERBUM Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Vatican II, 1965) An orientation and quick review by way of questions and answers. By Dennis Hamm, S.J., Professor emeritus of theology, Creighton University Q. Why should I take time to study this church document? At the heart of our Christian faith is the conviction that God has revealed Godself to human creatures, in the creation itself, but especially in the humanity of Jesus, understood as the eternal Son of God made flesh, and in the biblical testimony of sages, poets, historians and prophets and apostolic witnesses. This document is the most recent formal expression of the Christian community’s understanding of this revelation. We believe in a revealing God, and this is how we have put that core part of our faith into words for our own time. Q. Can’t I find what I need to know about revelation from the Catechism of the Catholic Church? The Catechism does a great job of summarizing the teaching of Dei Verbum within its account of the long tradition of the Church, especially in Part I, “The Profession of the Faith.” It also integrates the teaching of Dei Verbum throughout the whole of the Catechism, citing or paraphrasing DV some 77 times. So one can pick up a lot of the this document’s teaching by consulting the Catechism over the years. But the Catechism runs some 2865 paragraphs, and DV, as important as it is, is a relatively short document, running to only 26 numbered paragraphs. So there is a value in studying this document as a whole. -

The Fiftieth Anniversary of Vatican II's Dei Verbum
The Fiftieth Anniversary of Vatican II’s Dei Verbum Fifty years ago, on November 18, 1965, 2344 bishops (of the 2350 present at Vatican II)1 voted to accept the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, otherwise known as Dei Verbum. Dei Verbum not only addresses revelation in general but also focuses particular attention on the Bible, the written source of revelation. This nearly unanimous vote concluded one of the longest and most heated discussions at Vatican II, one that began before the Council opened and concluded only a few weeks before it ended. The original document proposed to the bishops, known as De fontibus revelationis (“Concerning the Sources of Revelation”) was discussed in the very first session of the Council, where it was strongly criticized. In fact, in a first vote on the document 822 bishops (37% of those present) opposed its adoption.2 Pope John XXIII then suspended debate on this document and sent it to a special commission for a complete rewriting. With a stroke of genius, he put in charge of this commission two of the most polar opposites in the Roman Curia, Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, head of the Holy Office, and an influential drafter of the first schemata of the Council, and Cardinal Augustin Bea, head of the Secretariat for Christian Unity and a biblical scholar.3 There were numerous revisions and interventions by bishops, cardinals, and experts over the next three years. Pope Paul VI himself intervened and helped to produce a final vote that was nearly unanimous. For in October 1965 Pope Paul convoked a meeting of the doctrinal commission of the Council in order to obtain the widest possible consensus on this text, which he considered to be one of basic documents of the entire Second Vatican Council.4 Dei Verbum is the Latin for “Word of God.” Word of course implies communication, and God’s communication to us, God’s self-disclosure, is known as revelation. -

Nel carcere medievale i prigionieri – incarcerati prima della Marina Gazzini Marina Gazzini sentenza, oppure rimasti “dentro” perché indebitati, socialmente perico- losi, riconosciuti colpevoli di un delitto – non erano abbandonati a loro stessi; delle loro esigenze si facevano carico le famiglie, la Chiesa, i laici devoti, gli stessi pubblici poteri. Nel caso di Milano il sistema carcerario e STORIE DI VITA E DI MALAVITA il rapporto tra carcerati, giustizia e misericordia assume sfumature pecu- liari. Le prigioni (anche private) sono numerose e disperse nella città: la MALAVITA VITASTORIE E DI DI Criminali, poveri e altri miserabili nelle carceri di Milano più grande è un carcere-ospedale, che rinchiude certo, ma lascia intendere alla fine del medioevo che è utile (per motivi economici) aiutare la sopravvivenza del reo e il suo ritorno in società. I milanesi del Quattrocento sono poi consci dei rischi di abbandonare i detenuti (uomini e donne) a una giustizia che, per i suoi costi, tutela solo i più forti. Ecco dunque i Protettori dei carcerati: utili non solo ai deboli rinchiusi in carcere, ma anche al dominus, che li sostiene. Interessato a porre rimedio agli eccessi del sistema, il duca è infatti anche (e forse soprattutto) desideroso di mostrarsi misericordioso, e in quanto tale superiore alla legge. Indagare la condizione dei carcerati si rivela dunque un modo per cogliere non solo le dinamiche di esclusione e di inclusione sociale pertinenti al controllo della devianza, ma anche i meccanismi di relazione tra governanti e governati nel tardo medioevo. -

Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II. -

It does not deter- mine its own contents, vouch for its own inspiration, or interpret itself. The Bible is God’s gift to the Church, which is its custodian and authoritative interpreter. The Councils of Trent and Vatican I clearly made these points. In summary fashion Vatican II declared that tradition, Scripture, and the magisterium “are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the others” (Dei Verbum 10). In other words, nothing is believed on the authority of tradition alone, Scripture alone, or the magisterium alone. Vatican II dealt with Scripture most explicitly in the third chapter of its Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, especially in section 12. Dei Verbum 12, which lays down the principles for the Catholic interpretation of Scripture, is of great importance but has often been misunderstood. In 1988, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrote: I am personally persuaded that a careful reading of the entire text of Dei Verbum can yield the essential elements for a syn- thesis between historical method and theological hermeneutics, but this connection is not easily comprehensible. For this reason the post-conciliar reception has practically dismissed the theo- logical parts of its statements as a concession to the past and has taken the text simply as an unqualified official confirmation of the historical-critical method. One may reckon such a one- sided reception of the Council in the profit column of the ledger insofar as the confessional differences between Catholic and Protestant exegesis virtually disappeared after the Council. -
