Congrats to Our Race Teams, the Men's Led by Captain Juan Oliveras, and Our Women's Team th The 6 Edition – Winter 2011 - 2012 The Long Island Road Runners PO Box 232 East Meadow, New York 11554 www.lirrc.org Club Hotline: 516-569-4959 As always, this newsletter is dedicated to the memories of Jack Dowling, Co-Founder and Past President, and Eunice Harris, Secretary/Treasurer. 1 FRED HASLETT PRESIDENT LONG ISLAND ROADRUNNERS President’s Message December 2011 Here we are again; it’s the end of the year. Where did the time go? I know we always hear people say that but it seems time is going by faster these days. There comes a time in life when we seem to reflect more on our lives and those close to us, and what they mean. 2 Running has been a big part of my life for many years, and what it has given me is priceless. Most of the things I have experienced have been wonderful. Being part of the LIRRC race team, we have put on hundreds of races over the years always doing our best to give runners what we feel that we would want in are race if we ran in it, A friendly, low cost, fun event. And with the help of quite a few talented people, we have accomplished that. In running in more races than I could ever remember over the years, and being in Eisenhower Park almost every week, I have met so many friends that I would never have met otherwise. And I am richer for it. Running is such an enriching sport, bringing people from different walks of life together by a common thread, their love of running. How lucky are we? How lucky am I. Although this may sound like someone reflecting on his life at the end of running, it is certainly anything but the end. There is much to look forward to. We are looking forward to a terrific 2012, starting with our New Year’s Day 5 Mile Hangover Run on Sunday January 1st. Last year 200 hardy souls came down to kick off the New Year right. A new year is approaching, and with that brings hope for better days. In giving thanks, I always hesitate to name names because of the fear of forgetting someone, but here goes. 3 Thanks go out to Bob Patterson (technical guru/webmeister), Colin Harris, Peter Cirona, Joyce Patterson, Kathy Agricola, Juan Oliveras, Sally Robison for being so dedicated in helping to put on race after race. And thanks to our other board members Adriana Staiano (team co-captain), Mike Ogazon (the email blaster), Jim Thornton (counsel), and Dave Philippi (big helper). Others who help make us a better club like Kevin Wizbicki (on the bike), Joe Tracy supervising the water stop, always a big relief to see him, Vera Lightfoot, so enthusiastic, Bob McVetty, the straw that stirs the drink, and of course, Dennis Boyd, who is so valuable a friend. And a big thank you to Jim Ferguson, our great newsletter editor, who does such a terrific job writing our newsletter. And also a big thanks to so many others who pitch in here and there for us. As we approach this holiday season, it’s a good time to look back, reflect, look forward to a better year, and run. On behalf of the LIRRC, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas, Chanukah, and anything else you may celebrate. We’ll see you in the park! Fred 4 HEARD & SEEN AROUND THE PARK What male and female running friends have been seen together lately in Eisenhower, looking like a lot more than friends? They make a wonderful couple. Only thing is only one of them is single. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RACE TEAMS! Congrats to our race teams, the men’s led by captain Juan Oliveras, and our women’s team led by co-captains Adriana Staiano and Kathy Agricola. Each finished the year with a very respectable 4th place finish in the USATF-LI Grand Prix standings. For the women’s team, once written off, it was an especially proud finish. And 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for our teams! 5 Wacky weather as early as October 29th made us think it would be a tough winter season ahead, but no sooner did Thanksgiving come, and 2 days later on November 26th.....70 degrees! ………Another nice day for the Sunday Morning Series on November 27th...When the winter does arrive, just remember to layer-up with proper clothing and you should be able to keep your running right on target.........A week after that freak storm LIRRC was represented at the NYC Marathon by some of our best. Mike Ogazon, Ira Kaplan, Bob Monaco gave it their all on a beautiful fall day. You guys did a great job! ...Boilermaker registration opens on January 7th online. This is a great race in Utica, New York that I ran last year. It hot & hilly, guaranteed to make you swear while you’re running it. I highly recommend this race if you are looking to challenge yourself this year........ Time to make a decision on the Long Island Festival of Races! Doing the full or half? Registration is open online now.....Congratulations to Grant Radtke who was on his way to the Las Vegas Marathon held on Dec. 4th. He did a great job, finishing in 3:41 flat! He has come through big for us in scoring Grand Prix points this year...... In the January 2012 Runner’s World, the Northport Running Club and Robert Skirkanich get a nice mention…. 6 Ira Kaplan & Bob Monaco 2011 ING NYC MARATHON 7 HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! Men’s Race Team Captain Juan Oliveras has compiled the latest list of new members, so welcome aboard! Your running will improve, and you will have a great time with the dedicated, knowledgeable members of our club! I’ve been training for a figure competition which seems to be my second love now (first of course, will always be running) I dropped 20 pounds and walked on as fit as ever. I will be competing in five figure competitions in 2012.” 10 This Month’s Pick: The Longest Fall by Lee Krinsky The Longest Fall is more than a running book; it is a book about life. It is a book about the bond that is formed between teammates, especially when dealing with terrible tragedy. Runners and non-runners will both find inspiration in overcoming heartbreak and triumphing over impossible odds. The book is beautifully written and the descriptions of running routes and parks in New York made me feel like I was there. –Runner’s Resource 11 NEW YEAR’S DAY 5 MILE HANGOVER FUN RUN Join us, members and friends alike, for our annual Hangover Run. It’s open to all runners, and it’s FREE! There will be plenty of refreshments, coffee, hot chocolate, bagels, and eggnog - and a 50/50 raffle. The fun run starts at 9:30am with our count down, then it’s off to run. No fee, no registration, no results, but we will put up the clock. We use 1 mile loops for those who don’t want to run all 5 miles. Bring the family and friends! It’s always a festive atmosphere and a great way to start the year off right! 12 Around The Track Report from Mike Ogazon on 10/16/11 Turtles Rule: You got that right Grant...6 hr Run...Marathon Distance to get a finishers medal...all the LIRRC members did the distance...they ran out of medals and will get them to us... RUN MCDC RUN MCDC MUSIC CITY DISTANCE CARNIVAL: EVENT PROFILE The Music City Distance Carnival - or MCDC as it has come to be known - has, for the last 17 years, proved to be the South’s premiere track meet. In its relatively short history, it has yielded more Tennessee All-Comers re- cords, state high school records, and Olympic Trials and National Championships qualifying performances than any other track meet in the state, and has produced more sub-4 minute miles than any other track meet in the entire southern United States. The meet can boast the second fastest outdoor mile ever recorded in Tennessee, at 3:55.65, and it has produced a total of 29 sub-4 minute miles. It also gave Nashville its first ever sub-4 in 2005, courtesy of 2-time Olympian, Anthony Famiglietti, and has yielded two Masters World records, including the amazing 3:58.79 clocking by 40-year-old Anthony Whiteman in 2012. Last year’s meet saw 10-time U.S. champion Emma Coburn provide a thrilling climax to the meet with a down to the wire win in the women’s 1500m. IMPACT OF COVID-19 The Covid-19 Pandemic has turned the sporting world upside down, and the sport of Track & Field is no excep- tion. With the Olympic Games and the U.S. Olympic Trials postponed until 2021, and with no U.S. Champion- ships replacement on the horizon, the sport’s biggest stage this year is likely to be right here in Nashville. Last year, MCDC had over 600 runners of all ages and abilities participating, and the meet drew a crowd of around 2500 at Vanderbilt University.

Welcome to the 17th Annual Women in Sports Business Symposium! The theme for WSBS 2013 is “Branding Athletes In a Digital Age” The digitization of our society and the continuous evolution of social platforms has presented athletes with the unique opportunity to build their brands through direct fan engagement. This evening, we hope to address the issue of branding athletes in a digital age from a variety of angles, and we have assembled a panel of industry professionals who will be able to provide diverse and interesting perspectives on the topic. We are proud to continue the vision of our founder, Jim Warsaw, by championing opportunities for and celebrating the accomplishments of many outstanding women in the sports industry. It was through the efforts and resources of the Warsaw Center that we have been able to bring together such an impressive audience and panel of guests. WSBS is a unique opportunity for the students of the Warsaw Center, as we get to take ownership of a compelling event about which we are all passionate. WSBS would not exist without the support of so many people. Thank you to our advisors, Paul Swangard and Whitney Wagoner, and the many departments and faculty of the Lundquist College of Business. Your time, talents and support have been essential to the success of the WSBS 2013. It is our honor to have you all joining us for this year’s event. Thank you for coming and enjoy! • NBNI Meet Program
Welcome We welcome all the outstanding participants to the 2018 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships. And we wish a special welcome to all parents, coaches, and friends – all of whose support is invaluable. Our organization, the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation, does more than present national-caliber track and field and cross country events. We also actively support clinics and other meets with substantial financial commitments. Over the years, NSAF has grown from helping a few athletes to one that annually enables over 10,000 athletes to participate in various meets and activities. This is the 35th edition of the event, which has had various names since its inception in 1984. We are again happy to have New Balance as our title sponsor. New Balance is a wonderful part- ner – we have been together for eight years, and we expect to be together for many more years to come. We mourn the loss of Dr. Norbert Sander, who passed unexpectedly a few days after last year’s meet. Dr. Sander was the driving force in making The Armory what it is today. He is sorely missed. We appreciate The Armory’s new leadership, led by Rita Finkel and Jonathan Schindel, with whom we have a great relationship. We trust that everyone present these three days will have memorable experiences, and we wish everyone great success! Sincerely, Jim Spier Meet Director Congratulations on earning a spot at New Balance Nationals Indoor 2018! Your determination, work ethic, and incredible talent qualified you for this very special world class indoor track & field meet. Like many Olympians before you, your capability created the opportunity to compete at an elite level and enjoy this one of a kind experience.
