Das Heraus- geberteam dankt allen Beitragenden sehr herzlich für ihr Engagement und ihre Mitarbeit. Helden sind Menschen. Also müssen auch Helden sterben. Im Unterschied zu ‚gewöhnlichen‘ Menschen kommt ihnen jedoch pos- tume Bewunderung zu: Auch nach seinem Tod ist der Held ein Held – aber ist deswegen auch sein Tod heroisch, wird sein Sterben als vorbildhaft angesehen oder im Gegenteil als unnachahmlich, sogar fragwürdig? Für viele Kulturen und Epochen scheint zu gelten: Helden müssen sterben, ja sie müssen sogar bereit dazu sein. Doch welche Rolle das Sterben von Helden für ihren Status als Held spielt, steht jeweils zur Debatte – die semantische und affektive Aufladung, Ästhe- tisierung und Erzählung vom heroischen Tod sind kulturell spezifisch und histo- risch situiert. Der Freiburger SFB 948 „Helden – Heroisierungen – Heroismen“ geht seit 2012 der Frage nach, warum und in welcher Weise Gemeinschaften immer wieder Hel- den, seltener Heldinnen, zum Fokus ihrer Selbstverständigung machen. Die Bei- träge im vorliegenden Sammelband richten den Fokus auf den Heldentod als eine wichtige Figuration des Heroischen. Es geht dabei um den ‚Tod von Helden‘, das heißt, das Sterben von Figuren, die schon zu Lebzeiten heroischen Status erlangt hatten, und ebenso um den ‚heldenhaften Tod‘, in dem das Sterben selbst als Fak- tor der Heroisierung anzusehen ist und den Toten unter Umständen erst im Nachhinein zum Helden werden lässt. Ganz grundsätzlich gehen die Beiträge der Frage nach, wie Sterben, Tod und heroisches Handeln in Bezug zueinander gesetzt werden und welche Beziehung Darstellungen heroischen Sterbens zwischen Helden und ihren Publika herstel- len. Welche Rolle spielen Sterben und Tod für Heroisierungsprozesse und Hero- ismen, für die Zuschreibung heroischer Qualitäten und für deren Aneignung im Handeln? Einige Beiträge legen nah, dass der Tod nicht immer das Ziel von Hel- dentaten ist, vielmehr nur in Kauf genommen wird, wenn er unvermeidbar ist. Tod und Heldentum sind keinesfalls immer und überall miteinander verknüpft. Ein heroischer Tod muss auch nicht, wie es eine militärische oder kriegerische Rhetorik nahelegen würde, zwingend im Kontext einer Kampfeshandlung ange- siedelt sein. Nicht immer geht es um einen Gegner im Außen, an dem sich der Held durch seine Todesbereitschaft beweist; der Heldentod kann sich ebenso – im Selbstopfer und als Suizid – gegen den Helden selber richten.
