The analysis of its gut content revealed the presence of 62 genera of planktonic life forms along with other animal matters. The organization of the alimentary tract and maximum Relative Mean Length of Gut (0.511±0.029 mm) indicated its carnivorous food habit. The peak gastro-somatic index (GSI) in winter-spring seasons and summer-rainy seasons indicated alteration of its feeding intensity. Furthermore, higher diet breadth on resource use (Levins’ and Hurlbert’s) with zooplankton compared to phytoplankton and Keywords: total plankton confirmed its zooplanktivore habit. The feeding strategy Diet breadth plots also suggested greater preference to zooplankton compared to Feeding strategy phytoplankton. The organization of its gill rakers specified a secondary Pachypterus atherinoides modification of gut towards either carnivory or specialized zooplanktivory. -

THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Alexandre Dumas THE AUTHOR Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was born in a small French village northeast of Paris. His father had been a general under Napoleon, and his paternal grandfather had lived in Haiti and had married a former slave woman there, thus making Dumas what was called a quadroon. Napoleon and his father had parted on bad terms, with Dumas’ father being owed a large sum of money; the failure to pay this debt left the family poor and struggling, though the younger Dumas remained an admirer of the French emperor. Young Dumas moved to Paris in 1823 and took a job as a clerk to the Duke of Orleans (later to become King Louis Philippe), but soon began writing plays. Though his plays were successful and he made quite a handsome living from them, his profligate lifestyle (both financially and sexually) kept him constantly on the edge of bankruptcy. He played an active role in the revolution of 1830, and then turned to writing novels. As was the case with Dickens in England, his books were published in cheap newspapers in serial form. Dumas proved able to crank out popular stories at an amazing rate, and soon became the most famous writer in France. Among his works are The Three Musketeers (1844), The Count of Monte Cristo (1845), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1850). Dumas’ novels tend to be long and full of flowery description (some cynics suggest that this is because he was paid by the word), and for this reason often appear today in the form of abridged translations (if you ever doubt the value of such an approach, take a look at the unabridged version of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables sometime). -

CONSTANCE is amongst the CROWD, accompanied by FLEUR BAUDIN and her friend THERESE DUBOIS. ARAMIS Stand back. They jostle for a good position to see whatever is coming next. THERESE Please, let me through! Meanwhile FATHER LUCA SESTINI leads his horse away from the CROWD, unknown that he is being followed by three THIEVES. EXT. PARIS. STREET. DAY SESTINI pauses to tie up his horse and rest, then starts to take down his luggage from the saddle. Seeing their opportunity the THREE THIEVES push him roughly aside and try to grab the bags from him. SESTINI Help! Please help! Help! He turns and calls into the CROWD. SESTINI (cont'd) Thieves! Thieves! ATHOS and ARAMIS hear his cries as they ride through the CROWD. They glance at each other and nod. ATHOS Make way!! They push their way through the CROWD, climb down off their horses and launch into a sword fight with the THIEVES. EXT. PARIS. STREET. DAY The Royal Carriage continues on its journey through the cheering CROWD with TREVILLE and PORTHOS at the head. (CONTINUED) 2. CONTINUED: The CROWD cheer from either side of the street as the carriage hurries through. MAN God bless you, Your Majesty! EXT. PARIS. STREET. DAY The sword fight between ARAMIS, ATHOS and the three THIEVES continues, even SESTINI has drawn his dagger and fights. One of the THIEVES picks up one of SESTINI’s bags and starts to run off with it. -

The present study was undertaken in order to untangle some of the problems of classification which have beset this group. The genera have not been studied in toto since the days of Bleeker and Gunther. In this study I have made an attempt to clarify the relationships of the various genera, which in some cases has involved revision of generic limits. Lack of time and material has precluded a thorough analysis of the species within any genus; for the same reason no skeletal examinations were possible. It is hoped, however, that a clarification of generic limits through study of external characters will make it easier in the future for interested workers, with sufficient material at hand, to do further and much-needed work on both the genera and the species. It is distinguished from congeners by the following characters: dark bars on the body much thinner in the anterior half of the body than in the posterior half; 9+8 branched rays in the caudal fin; males with suborbital flap; lateral line ends above base of anal fin; caudal fin hyaline and dark bars on posterior half of body more than twice as wide as interspaces. Abstract: The lips and associated structures, in different groups of fishes, are greatly modified in relation to the characteristic mode of feeding, food preference and the mode of life exhibited by the fish. The successful maintenance of fish populations in challenging environments requires responsive adjustments in their behaviour, morphology and physiology and these have been reflected by modifications at the level of their organ systems, organs and tissues. The lips are no exception to this. The importance of food in daily life of a fish is obvious and is reflected in the form of the mouth, lips, jaw and so on. These structures present more diverse modifications than any other organ of the body. The functional aspects of the lips and associated structures in family Gobiidae, Cobitidae, Belontiidae and few species of Cyprinidae show considerable variation and exhibit unique morphological modifications associated with their lips and other structures around the mouth regarding information on the level of surface architecture as seen under SEM in relation to various food and feeding habits and ecological niches. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Akysis longifilis, new species, is described from the Sittang River drainage in Myanmar. It is a member of the A. variegatus species group and can be distinguished from congeners in the group (except for A. brachybarbatus, A. fuliginatus, A. pictus, A. prashadi, A. variegatus, A. varius and A. vespa) in having a smooth (vs. serrated) posterior edge of the pectoral spine. It is distinguished from A. brachybarbatus, A. fuliginatus, A. pictus, A. prashadi, A. variegatus, A. varius and A. vespa in having a unique combination of: length of adipose-fin base 25.7–31.1% SL, body depth at anus 9.7–13.6% SL, caudal peduncle length 18.3–23.2% SL, caudal peduncle depth 5.6–7.2% SL, head width 21.1–24.7% SL, nasal barbel length 67.4–96.4% HL, maxillary barbel length 123.2–159.6% HL, vertebrae 33–35, body with light saddle-shaped spots, and caudal fin forked. Key words: Siluriformes, Sisoroidea, Sittang River, South Asia Introduction Members of the akysid catfish genus Akysis are small catfishes with tuberculate skin and a color pattern generally consisting of yellow patches or bands on a brown body. They are diagnosed by the anterior margin of the pectoral spine with a notch visible dorsally and the nasals with expansions beyond the canal-bearing region (de Pinna, 1996), and are found in fast-flowing streams and rivers in Southeast Asia [more specifically in the area bordered by the Irrawaddy River drainage to the west, the Barito River drainage to the east, the Lancanjiang (upper Mekong) drainage to the north and the Citarum River drainage to the south]. -

It is important natural resources that provide many useful products for food, spices, medicines, dyes, perfume and aesthetics to man. Zingiber officinale, for example, has been used for many years as spices and in traditional forms of medicine to treat a variety of diseases. Recently, scientific study has sought to reveal the bioactive compounds of the rhizome. It has been found to be effective in the treatment of thrombosis, sea sickness, migraine and rheumatism. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAMILY ZINGIBERACEAE Perennial rhizomatous herbs. Leaves simple, distichous. Inflorescence terminal on the leafy shoot or on the lateral shoot. Flower delicate, ephemeral and highly modified. All parts of the plant aromatic. Fruit a capsule. HABITATS Species of the Zingiberaceae are the ground plants of the tropical forests. They mostly grow in damp and humid shady places. They are also found infrequently in secondary forest. Some species can fully expose to the sun, and grow on high elevation. DISTRIBUTION Zingiberaceae are distributed mostly in tropical and subtropical areas. The center of distribution is in SE Asia. Wallich published Monolophus Wall. (Zingiberaceae) in 1832 for two taxa he had described previously in 1820 as Kaempferia linearis Wall. and K. secunda Wall. He also mentioned M. ? elegans Wall., but the “?” indicates that he was not certain that this species belonged to this new genus. Consequently, Monolophus elegans, while validly published, cannot be the lectotype of the generic name. In 1964 Larsen argued against accepting Monolophus and established the alternative Caulokaempferia K.Larsen. Caulokaempferia, typified by the name C. linearis (Wall.) K.Larsen, is, however, superfluous. Monolophus is hereby reinstated with 22 new combinations. Its phylogenetic position is shown in relation to other genera. Based on comparative nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence data analyses, Jirawongsea Picheans. (previously Caulokaempferia, pro parte) is reduced to Boesenbergia Kuntze with five new combinations. CHAPTER THIRTEEN ARACHNIDS 13.1 The arachnid fauna of south central Seram As with insects, only a very few specimens compared with the total number of known species were collected in the field. Nevertheless, they do cover most species commonly encountered and named by the Nuaulu. A checklist of arachnid specimens recorded in the Nuaulu area during field- work is presented in table 22. 13.2 Nuaulu categories applied to arachnids excepting Acarida 13.2.1 kanopone Scorpions (SCORPIONIDA) and possibly also whip-scorpions ( URO- PYGI ). 13.2.2 riko-riko, nau asue The first term is consistently applied to harvestmen ( PHALANGIDA ). In the second, nau is a general term for augury and divination; asu = 'dog', asu- = 'cheek' + non-human possessive pronominal suffix. Nau asue is applied to the harvestman Altobunus formosus. It is probably a synonym for riko-riko, being used as a nick-name in circumstances in which it seems auspicious. 13.2.3 kahuneke hatu nohu inae Hatu nohu(e), meaning 'cavernous rock outcrop, cave', indicates the habitat of this spider; inae = 'mother'. As kahunekete is the generic term for spider we thus have 'mother cave spider'. Applied quite specifically to tailess whip scorpions, and generally encountered in rock fissures when hunting bats. 13.2.4 kahuneke ai ukune Ai ukune = 'treetop', far forest. Applied to various kinds of long- bodied spider, including Theridion and possibly Nephilia. It therefore seems to be applied to both hunters and spinners of irregular webs in forest habi- tats. - 201 - 13.2.5 kahuneke titie Titie = 'hot', so-called on account of the ability of this round-bodied spider to bite humans and cause a painful swelling.
