Lawson writes, “I am interested in neighborhoods and communities and how they evolve over time… Through layering of different imagery, I want my work to be a map like palimpsest that shows what was, what is, and what is yet to come.” Mission Statement Moore College of Art and Design is dedicated to excellence in art and design. Founded in 1848, Moore is the first and only visual arts college for women in the United States. Through its undergraduate bachelor of fine arts degrees for women and its coeducational graduate programs, Moore cultivates creativity, promotes scholarship and prepares its students for professional careers in the arts by emphasizing critical thinking, problem solving, risk-taking and strong communication skills. Moore is dedicated to producing graduates that distinguish themselves as leaders in their fields. As a cultural leader, Moore promotes access to the arts throughout the broader community. The Galleries at Moore introduce the work of significant regional, national and international artists to the community through distinctive exhibitions and educational programs. The wide-ranging continuing education programs also serve the community by providing opportunities for men and women to learn new skills for personal and professional growth. Through Moore’s acclaimed Young Artists Workshop, founded in 1922, the lives of children and youth are enriched through creative arts education. Penny and Bob Fox Make Historic Gift to College This spring Penny and Bob Fox made a historic gift of $2 million 4 to Moore College of Art & Design. The gift funds Moore’s first Endowed Professorship and five new Internship Fellowships. Visionary Woman Awards 2011 This year, Moore’s Jane Zimmerman Walentas ’66 is one of three 2011 Visionary Woman Awards honorees. On October 12, she will be honored alongside political cartoonist Signe Wilkinson and artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. 6 Career Profile: Meet Renee Reeser Zelnick ’89 Meet concept artist and illustrator Renee Reeser Zelnick ’89. She now splits her time between two studios, one in Los Angeles and one in Lancaster County, PA. 24 FALL 2011 1 TEACHING EXCELLENCE Teaching Excellence This past spring, I announced my intention to resign in May 2012 at the end of this academic year. As this final year as president of Moore begins, I look back to my arrival twelve years ago. When I came to Moore as the ninth president of the College, there were opportunities along with challenges. I am pleased to say that thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of faculty, staff, board and alumnae, many dreams and goals have been achieved. Having been a professor at Temple University for 20 years, I know that excellence in teaching is the cornerstone of any academic institution. So announcing the first endowed professorship for the College was a special pleasure. At the BFA Commencement May 15, 2011, The Penny and Bob Fox Distinguished Professorship was awarded for the first time to Moe Brooker, Professor and Chair of Foundation. Professor Brooker exemplifies excellence in his teaching, his artistic practice, and his service to the arts community. He challenges students through example, leadership and hard work to pursue their own artistic vision and dreams.     A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree by Examining Committee Members: ABSTRACT “Materializing Blackness: The Politics and Production of African Diasporic Heritage” examines how intellectual and civic histories collide with the larger trends in the arts and culture sector and the local political economy to produce exhibitions at the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) and structure the work that museum exhibitions do to produce race visually for various audiences. Black museums are engaged in the social construction of race through their exhibitions and programs: selecting historical facts, objects and practices, and designating them as heritage for and to their audiences. In tracking this work, I am interested in 1) the assemblages of exhibits that are produced, as a function of 2) the internal logics of the producing institutions and 3) larger forces that structure the field as a whole. Looking at exhibits that engage Blackness, I examine how heritage institutions use art and artifacts to visually produce race, how their audiences consume it, and how the industry itself is produced as a viable consumptive market. Undergirded by the ways anthropologists of race and ethnicity have been explored and historicized race as a social construction I focus on an instantiation of the ways race is constructed in real time in the museum. Introduce Yourself marc brickman 2 months ago hello everyone, currently live in malibu ca on the ocean and work from my studio here at the house... my time is spent these days raising my daughter who is 2-1/2. for years i travelled the world with rock bands as their production / lighting designer so my tools were light, image and darkness... about 8 years ago we were living in a nyc downtown loft when i began to paint and have not stopped. my interest is to be a great technical painter as the subject matter flows effortlessly. i have hundreds of pieces piled up in storage and in my studio but i still don't feel that i have hit my stride. i hope this class will give me the knowledge i am searching for worldwide. HUNTSMAN HALL:FORUM:ELEVATOR HALL Tom Appelquist Biographical Statement After practicing architecture in Philadelphia for 30 years, I moved to Santa Fe in 2005 to paint full time. As an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania I took drawing and color theory courses with the landscape painter Neil Welliver who had studied at Yale with Joseph Albers. These courses stayed with me during the many years when I was painting on my own while working as an architect. A raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 2006 provided a transcendent experience of the elemental forces of the American West: water, rock, sunshine and stars. My water colors from this trip, painted with river water, have grit in their surface. Following a workshop with Judy Tuwaletstiwa at Santa Fe Art Institute, I began at her suggestion to use oil sticks on canvas and to work at a much larger scale. My training as an architect seemed to make the idea of painting with an oil stick, which is like a large crayon, feel natural and familiar.

    The Art Collection of Dear Colleagues, Over the past several years the Wharton School, with input from our faculty, students and staff have expanded the school's art collection. Many of the pieces, in support of Philadelphia and its arts culture, were purchased from local galleries and depict local scenes. As the collection evolved, several works by University of Pennsylvania Alumni were included and its scope broadened to include mixed media works as well as international artists. Regards, Maria O'Callaghan-Cassidy The Collection JAMES B. ABBOTT (b. 1954) ATLANTIC CEDAR SWAMP, 2006 GELATIN SILVER PRINTS THREE PANEL PANORAMA: 20 X 24 INCHES EACH James B. Abbott (Philadelphia, PA, born 1954) has lived and worked in Philadelphia since 1980. His photographic subjects have ranged from the Berlin Wall to the Ben Franklin Bridge, from urban city-scapes to the solitude and rich natural beauty of outer Cape Cod. Regardless of subject, what consistently remains is an intense eye for composition, attention to detail and skill in the dark room. All Abbotts’ black and white prints are hand toned adding the unique richness. Abbott received a BFA in photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI and in 1984 completed his professional training by apprenticing with renowned American photographer Burk Uzzle. Abbott has received two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship Awards and an SOS grant. Many important public and private collections contain Abbott’s work, including the Allentown Museum of Art, Cranbrook Museum of Art, the Federal Reserve Bank, Philadelphia and in 2006 the work juried into The Print Center’s 80th Annual International Competition: Photography was awarded the Philadelphia Museum of Art Purchase Prize.

Vibrations in the Soul: Moe Brooker’s Sacred Paintings Nikki A. Greene, Assistant Professor of Art, Wellesley College Moe A. Brooker (b. 1940) readily acknowledges his status as a “P.K.,” a preacher’s kid. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, he found his earliest artistic inspiration in the church, sketching various characters from the perspective of the pulpit: the grandmother with children, the old man who slept on the pew each week, the women with outstanding, regal church hats. Keenly aware of the sleek and brilliant wardrobes worn in the church—and on the streets of Philadelphia—he kept those animated palettes in mind when his paintings later became primarily abstract. Greene he cannot see—has drawn him to the influences of Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859–1937) and Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944). As contemporaries in Europe, Tanner as an American-born artist and Kandinsky as a Russian, each artist developed spiritual theories that were manifested in new styles and experiments in painting. Furthermore, the musical innovations of jazz musicians, such as Charlie Parker, solidified Brooker’s own ambitions to push his aesthetic sensibilities. Throughout his more than four-decade-long career in the arts, Brooker has created a distinctive artistic language that calls out to viewers to not only look at his work as arrangements of patterns, colors, and shapes on canvas or paper, but also as investigations into the divine.1 Initially, Brooker believed that abstract painters were indeed “charlatans.”2 He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 1973 and later the Tyler School of Art of Temple University.
