Newsletter No.32 19 October 2017 WELCOME TO Azaelia who started in Room 6 and Lorna , Oliver and Miya who all started in Room 2, joining their siblings here at Grant’s Braes

The Senior Technology Group has been working this year through the Engineering Process to enter in the Transpower Engineering Awards. They identified a need in the school which was a ‘chill out space’ for children to relax and unwind. They came to this idea through brainstorming, planning, surveying stakeholders and developed a refined brief. We went on a fun shopping exhibition to buy lots of exciting things for the space, including bean bags, cushions, a seat, turf and some soft cushy stuff to sit on! Watch this space! PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Kia Ora I would like to welcome you all back to the final term of the school year and I hope you all had a wonderful break. It has been lovely seeing the students so excited to be back at school and engaged in their learning. This term is only 9 weeks long and full with exciting events. This includes the School Fair, Year 6 Camp, Year 5 Activity Week, Year 4 Fun Day and overnight stay, sports days, and all of the other end of year celebrations. I suggest we all ‘buckle up’ and enjoy the ride. Yesterday, our Mandarin Enrichment Children had an amazing experience in a full Chinese Immersion Day with other local Primary School children down at Tahuna. Our school was selected to perform at the conclusion of this day due to their positive attitude and commitment throughout the day, which made us very proud. It was lovely to see Maisie’s photo in the ODT today as a result of this, and look for further photographs in this newsletter. My thanks to Jess McAuley for her ongoing commitment to this group, and for co-ordinating yesterday’s event for our children. Over the break, the crew from Breens Construction worked tirelessly to complete the first stage of the ramp project. What they were able to achieve in the short time frame was incredible and they ensured that the school was ready and extremely tidy for the first day of term. There is still railings, drainage and outdoor carpet to be installed to complete this project. This will make a huge difference to our school and the people within in it and I think it looks very sharp. I would like to acknowledge the Ministry of Education for funding this, as well as Jamie Lyons, from Signature Property, for managing the project. There is now just over a week before the School Fair and the committee and stall organisers have been working incredibly hard to make this an awesomely successful, family fun event. It is not too late to get involved and I know any help will be appreciated. I hope you all enjoy the long weekend and hopefully the weather is kind to us all! Hei kona mai I roto I ngā mihi, Goodbye for now and thanks. GARETH TAYLOR, PRINCIPAL

TERM 3 PRINCIPAL AWARD WINNERS

CONGRATULATIONS to Karlee, Harry and who received last term’s Principal Awards for their excellent attitude in ‘Aiming High’ (Term 3’s School Value). Abby and Kaitlin were chosen to attend the NZ Marine Centre’s Gifted and Talented Programme held at the Portobello Aquarium throughout Term 2. The girls were placed in research teams and were mentored by postgraduate marine science students while conducting a research project of their own design. At the conclusion of this programme, the girls’ presented their findings to their peers, families and friends at an evening presentation. Abby and Kaitlin were outstanding representatives of our school and will do their presentation to our school at a forthcoming assembly. FAIR RAFFLE Thank you to those families who have sold their raffle cards, and more - this is much appreciated.

The cards need to be returned with the correct money (whether fully sold or not!!) by TOMORROW, Friday 20 October.

If this week you arranged to sell an additional card, please ensure this is returned by next WEDNESDAY, 25 October.

The prize winners will be drawn/announced at the Fair on Sunday 29th October at 1.30pm.

Last term, Cole wrote a letter to The Queen asking if she lived in a house or a castle??!!! Cole was VERY EXCITED to clear the mailbox on Wednesday to find that her Lady-In-Waiting had replied on her behalf, and included lots of information for him to pore over, including showing that she lived in a castle (Palace)!!! His excitement, and ours, was certainly worth sharing!! OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTS IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE
