After that match, Ernie marches to the finals where once again he loses to William Renshaw, 5 sets again. Ernie may be the best of the rest, but Willie is still the best. 53 weeks at #1 due to there being 53 Monday's in 1883. 130 weeks at #1, 3 YE #1 1884- Lawford, who invented the topspin forehand by the way, beat the US champ Sears at the Irish and Ernie in the finals, both in straights. Lawford wins London Athletic Club as well, and looks poised to challenge Willie Renshaw for the Wimbledon title and #1 crown. Lawford had to play Wilberforce first round so this is 2 years in a row they give Lawford a top contender first round, do they have beef with him? Lawford wins in straights, Ernie loses SF, and Lawford plays Willie in the finals. But Renshaw holds firm and takes his title once more, in straights and with a bagel in the first, wow.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Three historians helped to make this study possible. Timothy Gilfoyle supervised my work with great skill. He gave me breathing room to research, write, and rewrite. When he finally received a completed draft, he turned that writing around with the speed and thoroughness of a seasoned editor. Tim’s own hunger for scholarship also served as a model for how a historian should act. I’ll always cherish the conversations we shared over Metropolis coffee— topics that ranged far and wide across historical subjects and contemporary happenings.

EXPLORE GAME, SET & MATCH As Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Serbia’s Novak Djokovik enjoy being 2018 Wimbledon champions, we flick through the history of the oldest tennis tournament in the world. The oldest, and arguably the most famous tennis tour- nament in the world, Wimbledon Tennis Championships began life as a way to raise cash to repair a pony-drawn lawn roller – for croquet lawns. The All England Croquet Club was formed in Wimble- don, southwest London, in 1868, at a time when croquet was popular. Nine years later and with the popularity of tennis on the rise, the club changed its name to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club and announced it would hold a tennis championship, largely in order to raise money for “a pony-drawn roller for its croquet lawns”. The first Wimbledon Championship started on July 9, 1877. Gentleman’s singles only, 22 players took part and around 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final, which was won by Spencer Gore. Since then, the championships – most commonly sim- ply referred to as Wimbledon – have carved their way into the annals of sporting history and are very much consid- ered a great British sporting tradition. This issue, Flashes takes a walk through Wimbledon’s history and some fascinating facts… Right: William Renshaw and H F Lawford playing for the men’s singles title at Wimbledon in 1881, which Renshaw won 54 FLASHES / AUGUST 2018 FLASHBACK www.mbrf.ae AUGUST 2018 / FLASHES 55 Tennis rackets have changed over the years. • Introduction All Available Tennis History
Introduction All available tennis history books tackle tennis history unevenly in two main respects. They usually give very little information on the pre-1919 years and do not give enough weight to professional tennis before 1968. I decided to overcome these limitations in my book by devoting one page for each year starting from 1877. Each page contains a short summary of the major events in that particular year, with scores of classic matches given in detail; and year-end rankings in tabulated form that show the performance of the top players at the major events. As the greatest novelty of this work I have provided year-end rankings for the whole course of tennis history. These include each year the Top 8 players (with their nationality and age indicated) and (separated by a dividing line) additional winners of the listed major events. Although from 1973 and 1975 there are official computer rankings by the ATP and WTA, respectively, their main purpose is to have an order of admittance to tournaments and facilitate seeding. Opinions differ as to the credibility of such computer lists for other purposes. The calculation methods often changed during their history, and they did not take into account important tournaments (like the year-ending championships till 1990) and team competitions (like Davis Cup till 2009). Prior to the use of the computer, rankings were a matter of judgement made by tennis journalists. I feel that even after the introduction of computer lists, the opinion of leading journalists represent a better guide to the future historian of how the players stood in relation to each other.
