The game as played by such men as Norman E. Brookes, the late Anthony Wilding, William M. Johnston, and R. N. Williams is art. Yet like all true art, it has its basis in scientific methods that must be learned and learned thoroughly for a foundation before the artistic structure of a great tennis game can be con- structed. Every player who helps to attain a high degree of efficiency should have a clearly defined method of development and adhere to it. He should be certain that it is based on sound principles and, once assured of that, follow it, even though his progress seems slow and discouraging. I began tennis wrong. My strokes were wrong and my viewpoint clouded. I had no early training such as many of our American boys have at the pres- ent time. No one told me the importance of the fundamentals of the game, such as keeping the eye on the ball or correct body position and footwork.

Downloaded by [New York University] at 14:32 03 October 2016 A Social History of Tennis in Britain From its advent in the mid to late nineteenth century as a garden-party pastime to its development into a highly commercialised and professionalised high-performance sport, the history of tennis in Britain refl ects important themes in Britain’s social history. In the fi rst comprehensive and critical account of the history of tennis in Britain, Robert J. Lake explains how the game’s historical roots have shaped its contemporary structure, and how the history of tennis can tell us much about the history of wider British society. Since its emergence as a spare-time diversion for landed elites, the dominant culture in British tennis has been one of amateurism and exclusion, with tennis sitting alongside cricket and golf as a vehicle for the reproduction of middle-class values throughout wider British society in the twentieth and twenty-fi rst centuries. Consequently, the Lawn Tennis Association has been accused of a failure to promote inclusion or widen participation, despite steadfast efforts to develop talent and improve coaching practices and structures. Robert J. Lake examines these themes in the context of the global development of tennis and important processes of commercialisation and professional and social development that have shaped both tennis and wider society. 2012 News Page 1 of 18 The Website of Maria Bueno, Tennis Champion 2012 NEWS ROGER FEDERER VISITS SAO PAULO, 6-9 December 2012 The Gillette Federer Tour kicked off Roger’s first South American visit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last week and he was keen to involve Maria in the proceedings. The two met at the Player Party, where Roger was joined by Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers. Roger invited Maria to hit with him so he could see her legendary backhand for himself and arrangements were made for them to take to the court laid at the Ibirapuera indoor arena. Maria instructed him not to hit ‘anything spinny’, to which Roger replied that he would play her like he does with his parents and afterwards admitted she was way much better than them! Later he posted a picture of them on his Facebook page, saying: “About to play tennis Maria Esther Bueno… she has won 19 Grand Slam titles (7 singles, 11 doubles and 1 mixed)… she still plays amazing!” As for Maria, she was just astonished at how well he hit the ball. “He sliced one backhand that sped off the court like it had skidded off a line,” she said. “I said: Whoa! What was that? And he just laughed! “It was a fantastic experience and I think he enjoyed it too!” The two players swapped gifts – she gave him a framed photograph, which she signed ‘You are simply the best’ while he presented her with one of his rackets, personally signed on the handle.

Wimbledon is passing ! Not the in- I stitution which the world knows as the lawn tennis championships, but the ground hallowed by the history of the game a history shoemarked on its courts. It is rather a tragic thought, this uprooting of a shrine saluted for twoscore years and more by every disciple of lawn tennis in this country and by many a pilgrim from distant lands. After another June, or possibly two, dust-stained pedestrians, panting to reach the wicket gate, will cease to jostle each other on the old ladies and will railway footpath ; young cease to camp out in that uninspiring strip of unkempt roadway which connects the Worple Road with the of the All Club gates England ; waiting motor-cars will no longer convert a quiet and respectable neigh- bourhood into one great, inchoate garage.

Upravo ovim radom žele se pomenuti svi šampioni ovako velikog turnira kao što je Rolan Garos koji se igra od 1891. godine. Uz sve muške osvajače od 1891. godine, poseban akcenat biće na “4 Musketara” koji su vladali 1920-ih i 1930-ih godina teniskim svijetom. Njih su činili Žak Briunon, Žan Borotra, Anri Koše i Rene Lakosta. Istaknutu pažnju u ovom radu ima Rafael Nadal, koji je 11 puta osvajao ovaj turnir, što je rekord na Gren slem turnirima, biće prikazana njegova biografija kao i profesionalna karijera. Willie defends Wimbledon title, retains #1, 2 YE #1, 77 weeks at #1 1883- Willie vacates Irish title, Ernie wins it. Lawford won London Athletic Club and Prince's Club, Wilberforce wins Manchester. Ernie Renshaw had to play Lawford first round which is a joke but Ernie won it in 5. Horrible seeding. After that match, Ernie marches to the finals where once again he loses to William Renshaw, 5 sets again. Ernie may be the best of the rest, but Willie is still the best. 53 weeks at #1 due to there being 53 Monday's in 1883. 130 weeks at #1, 3 YE #1 1884- Lawford, who invented the topspin forehand by the way, beat the US champ Sears at the Irish and Ernie in the finals, both in straights. Lawford wins London Athletic Club as well, and looks poised to challenge Willie Renshaw for the Wimbledon title and #1 crown. Lawford had to play Wilberforce first round so this is 2 years in a row they give Lawford a top contender first round, do they have beef with him? Lawford wins in straights, Ernie loses SF, and Lawford plays Willie in the finals. But Renshaw holds firm and takes his title once more, in straights and with a bagel in the first, wow.

After all, I was the guy who let his racket do the talking. But as I settled into life as a former player, I had a lot of time to reflect on where I’d been and what I’d done, and the way the story of my career might impact people.
